Clothes for growing child

My nephew is 8 yet fits into clothes for 11 year olds, it’s not a weight problem but a height/limbs problem! He now since summer only has one pair of black jeans he fits into.

I’ve just ordered him some Matalan trousers and jeans and boxer shorts but where/what do other parents do?

I think Vinted bundles are good for this. Check the actual size measurements on the clothes that fit best - rather than going by the age bracket - as it can vary by brand.

RandomMess · 02/10/2026 10:26

Brands like Verbaudet come up slimmer than most UK brands

ItsmeMargo · 02/10/2026 10:28

My children is 16 and 18 now, but when they were younger, I used to get a lot of their things from next. I’m pretty sure they do different waist sizes: plus size, regular, slim fit. My younger son was always tall and slim for his age, so as I had to size up for him, I would buy the slim fit in the bigger size.

RandomMess · 02/10/2026 10:29

M&S used to do extra long on some things too, as did ASDA but that may have been school uniform only

UpToonGirl · 02/10/2026 14:13

H&M tends to be good for taller but slimmer DC, I've found. They are pretty reasonably priced also.

NameChangeScot · 02/10/2026 18:12

My boys have always tracked a few years ahead with clothing. I just buy them what fits, Next goes up to age 17-18.

My 12 yr old is now into small mens in some brands, which is annoying as it's more expensive and men's clothes are made for broader shoulders but he's still got a boys build. He's size 9 feet! My 15yr old has been in men's clothes since he went to secondary school, he's 6ft 3" and his feet size 12. Some kids are just taller and grow quicker.

NameChange30 · 02/10/2026 19:43

Shorts. I have a 9yo wearing age 11-12 (I go by height on the size charts) and I find that shorts last a bit longer because you can get away with varying lengths, unlike trousers!

I get school trousers with adjustable waistbands and always have them on a slimmer waist relative to the length. And anything that isn't uniform has elasticated waistbands, even jeans have the adjustable elastic bit in the waist.

I feel as if I'm always buying him clothes as he outgrows them so fast.

Mustreadabook · 02/10/2026 20:51

Decathlon clothes are long and narrow. For school uniform marks and spencer do slim fit and extra long

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 02/10/2026 21:59

Is the issue that he is slim with long legs?

If so, school trouser wise, M&S do a long leg and an extra long leg trouser. DS is 9 and had age 8-9 legs and a size 5-6 waist (I know because he accidentally put a pair of his sister 5-6 jogging bottom on and the waist fit him perfectly but they came to just below his knee). I bought him age 6-7 extra long leg trousers which fit him really well.

Otherwise H&M and Primark are the slimmest fitting trousers I’ve found and have adjustable waists. I wish they’d do kids trousers in varying leg lengths like they do adults.

That’s a good idea about the slim fit in the bigger size. His hips have grown too (widened?).

Yes he is slim with long legs but he’s also tall for his age, third tallest in boys in his class and at 8 in June (his birthday month) he’s fitting into 11 year old clothes!

School clothes aren’t so much of an issue, they get his polo tops, sweatshirts and trousers from Tu Sainsburys. It’s his everyday jeans and trousers that he grows out of so quickly.

I’ll look in there.

That’s a good idea about elasticated waistbands. But the jeans I bought him in Next this spring with elasticated waistbands he’s now grown out of.

He’s always grown quickly but seems to have had a real growth spurt this year. And it is height not width with him.

My DS9 is currently wearing 12-13 clothes and isn't particularly large. He is one of (but not) the tallest in his class. He has long legs and a shorter body like me. We just buy a bigger size it's not rocket science.

Yes but what I'm saying is even the bigger clothes my nephew is being bought eg recently for 10 year olds he’s now outgrown them in a few months and into next year up! It’s expensive but also time consuming. Anyway I’ve bought him some Matalan stuff, eBay stuff and will do a small H&M order for him too. Prob buy 12 year old clothes.

My boy tends to plateau and then suddenly stretch overnight with no warning 😅 I always buy in the next size up - so while he’s wearing say 4-5, I’ll be buying bits in 5-6 and putting them away for his next stretch. I get a lot of his stuff from charity shops, vinted and sale sections too.
Little loop ( or I think it’s just called lloop now) is worth a look too

HairyBanana · 03/10/2026 08:44

Same for both my kids, 13 year old daughter is now 5'10" and in long tall sally territory, which does not meet her style requirements! For the 10 year old boy I mainly buy drawstring joggers, then sew elastic to the drawstring to make them tighter without him having to tie a bow every time. He's good at bows but that would still be a faff. Tesco F&F are good for joggers. School trousers are easier because you can get adjustable waists. He also has skinny jeans from Next which fit well, baggy jeans never work.

DelurkingAJ · 03/10/2026 08:49

When he’s older then Uniqlo also come up narrow. He will cost a fortune, sorry (side eyes DS1 who went from 5’8” to 6’1” this year but still has an age 11 waist).

FckThisShit · 03/10/2026 08:50

Asda, lots and lots of Asda clothes, particularly ones with adjustable waist or longer leg.

Long tall Sally is cheap crap nowadays. Try next long (tall will be too long), you can get some great jeans in the sale / clearance or even Sainsbury's I find do a good leg length now, I'm 5'11 and the long sizes fit my leg length. If she's into dungarees, Run & Fly do amazing ones and all sorts of designs.

This is pretty normal - mine are full size grown now but there were definitely some years where we went through several outfit resets as they were just shooting up. The year of “three new sets of school shoes, trainers and walking boots” was a bad one.

Look for the adjustable waist trousers and be generous on the length (he could always have the bottoms of longer ones hemmed up a bit to alllw
growing room). It’s an awkward growth spurt size too as in a year or so he’ll soon start needing the men’s XS rather than the kids Age 13 or whatever, and you have to get used to all those options too.

And the more growing he does now, the sooner he’ll
stop. I’ve barely needed to get any larger sizes now for my 16 year old for a year and a half ish, as he’s already towering over me. Whereas some of his friends are still on their way up.

I'll pass this onto his parents.

I think I might offer to eBay some of his old clothes for his mum (she doesn’t have the time) but at a recent Autumn Fair at school they were selling used uniform clothes but not everyday clothes and she wondered why on earth not as she’d have snapped up everyday stuff for him.

Luckily his little brother (3 this month) hasn’t grown as much recently.

Vinted is a good website/app for buying and selling secondhand kids clothes.

Bluegaze · 03/10/2026 12:58

Next do super skinny longer length jeans i always bought these for my son growing up who has always been tall and slim over the last year or so he has changed more to the slim fitting though at 11 nearly 12 he’s now in 14-16 years depending on the brand, altho i do find levi jeans to be the best for tall and slim boys vinted is quite good for them.

Thanks. I bought her some joggers from Next and they turned out to be long tall sally. The main issue we have with all of those brands is that they don't do stuff in the styles she wants. She sees it as stuff I wear, which is obviously pretty horrific. Have been advised to try uniqlo, so that's my next stop.
