Trainers - leopard print or chocolate suede?

Help me MNetters. I am early 40s and finding my own style again after years of running after small children. Fashion has changed in the last 10 or 15 years (where has the time gone) and I’m feeling a bit lost. What do you think of these trainers to go with wide leg trousers? I liked the idea of the leopard print but wasnt convinced when I tried them on. Are they good or just naff? I don’t usually wear leopard print but love it on others. Should I play it safe with the chocolate suede trainers or no?

I do frequent long haul travel for work so they seemed like quite comfy options.

Option 1 - Leopard Print https://www.johnlewis.com/carvela-veneto-leopard-print-trainers-multi/p115479724?size=5

Option 2 - Chocolate suede

@StylishAndBeautiful Leopard prints are great in smaller amounts. So shoes or a scarf. A blouse if under a jacket. It’s about quality and finesse.

StylishAndBeautiful · 29/09/2026 15:16

@ProfessorofDarkArts , 'granny' and 'mumsy' are rather negative. Curve does suggest outsize and petite suggests short.

@MeetMeOnTheCorner , a touch of it might be ok but it tends to look a bit cheap.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 29/09/2026 15:21

@StylishAndBeautiful Why do you think Gucci and Prada, not to mention Valentino and Max Mara are cheap? Only in the uk is this slur used against beautifully dressed women!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/09/2026 15:25

@StylishAndBeautiful @MeetMeOnTheCorner personally I like to channel our best-beloved-dear-departed Dolly - "It takes a lot of money to look this cheap".

Not keen. Is carvela a bit of a granny brand?

Not unless your granny is very young indeed.

You have misinterpreted my use of the word cheap. I meant it looks like £ even if it's £££.

Oh come on, all brands have their demographic and one with the word ‘curve’ in the name is by definition going to be aimed at larger sizes. That isn’t a negative any more than being aimed at an older audience is (unless you choose to make it one…) but if OP wants to look a bit more current that type of brand isn’t the best choice.

If you're defending writing off an entire range with a "granny" insult then I don't think we'll be agreeing

ProfessorofDarkArts · 29/09/2026 15:53

It wasn't me who used the word granny but in an earlier post I did point out that I thought the brand was probably for an older audience. In actual fact I'd think a typical granny-aged person wearing those trainers would look pretty cool but the OP is considerably younger.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 29/09/2026 15:54

@ProfessorofDarkArts I’m 71. What’s aimed at me? What should I avoid? Don’t need curve shapes any more but I like Max Mara brands. Is that ok for my age?

Sketchers are the older audience if anyone wants to be ageist.

my mum 90+ has bought her first pair.

or maybe she's on trend.

Wonkybaby · 29/09/2026 17:10

Leopard print all the way! The brown ones are boring

Thecows · 29/09/2026 17:23

Brown but not that brown one

Weeellokthen · 29/09/2026 17:40

Hate leopard print, there's just something so cheap about it.🤑so I'm going with brown

Have to disagree about Sketchers being for older people. My 8yr loves them, as do I 😂

Here's the ones I mentioned...

😮

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 29/09/2026 19:30

@ProfessorofDarkArts I just wanted to know if I failed the style police? You have ideas about age which wasn’t anything to do with the thread!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2026 20:06

Gosh, there’s some right bloody nonsense on here!

I prefer the brown, because I don’t like the silver bit on the leopard ones, though I do like leopard print generally.

I have a couple of friends who wear Carvella; they’re mid 50s. It’s not a brand I generally look at, but no particular reason why.

I like the Hoff ones that someone posted too.

Saintsgirl7 · 29/09/2026 20:41

These are by far the nicest on this thread!

BIossomtoes · 29/09/2026 21:07

I had a pair of Carvela ankle boots when I was in my 30s. It’s ridiculous to write off their entire range.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2026 21:30

Everybody and his dog wearing Adidas though.
