It's a clever outfit.

You could look at it and think Ulster Scots, or you could look at it and think Irish dancer theme.

The colours are muted enough not to irritate anyone, and it looks good.

Do you think the press will go with “sweet nod” or “clever nod” 🤔😬😆

The whole outfit is well put together and very smart. We don't often see her in a skirt. A welcome change from the coat dress.

I thought the coat dresses went out some time ago? True that she doesn't wear skirts much.

I'm not sure how clever an outfit it is if you are looking at it that way (I didn't) - looks very scotch to me (I'm Irish) - certainly wouldn't think of it as a hybrid irish-scots thing or a bridging the divide outfit. Also she could just wear a dress or a skirt that had no symbolism whatsoever.

justasking111 · 09/10/2026 17:00

Has she worn the coat for Remembrance Sunday it looks familiar. Or maybe they all look very similar.

Yes, she's been all about the suits for a while now.

Skirts are having a “moment” this autumn/winter - all part of the Dark Academia trend. I haven’t worn long skirts for years, so am quite looking forward to re-introducing them into my wardrobe (Not a tartan one though 🤣)

Pallisers · 09/10/2026 17:57

I'd love to see Catherine in a full-on dark academia look. My sil (actually an academic) has been rocking that look for years.

Now I can see Meghan in this academia look. Not sure about Catherine although she does look good in country autumn colours.

Kate looks dull and frumpy in her outfit in Belfast. I can’t find a single redeeming feature.

Ah, the "f" word... what do you mean? I think the outfit is a bit dull, although I suspect it looked good in real life.

It would have looked better with flat boots

I think flat boots can look a bit clumpy.Maybe heeled boots?

Dull, exactly. That’s what frumpy means to me. Dreary, old-fashioned, unattractive and dull.

Eaumyword · 09/10/2026 22:38

Also an outlier as I think Kate's outfit is really elegant! Love the white ruffle shirt - it all works on her.

Although when I looked at the rave reviews it got in Harper's, I thought the photos looked better - the coat is really well cut and the skirt moves well. Not my favourite look, but still.

It's a week for unusual trouser looks.

Rania normally looks great, those trousers are not flattering her, to say she the least. I like the burgundy blouse, though.

The woman next to her in the blue outfit looks good.

To my mind, a blouse with a jabot might not be to everyone's taste, but it is certainly not dull. I quite like the ensemble, especially after I watched a video seeing it in movement. The coat, in particular, is beautifully cut.

The video I watched did predictably use the phrase "subtle nod."

Ask yourself would Mary wear it. I doubt it
Or Leti ? Perhaps. With a twist.
Max too. With a big twist.
It was a very suitable outfit for an older woman back in the day.
Her grandmother’s day.
But Kate’s in her 40s with a fab figure and glorious hair.
She could have done better.

To be fair, it has been rated well in the fashion bibles, and that vibe is very fashionable. There's a lot of brown, grey and checks. I've seen quite a few tartan skirts in the shops. So it's not really my taste but I think it's probably quite modern, iyswim.

Tartan, ruffles and longline coats are all very current trends and have featured on
many designer runways for 2026. Kate, or rather Kate’s stylist, has simply interpreted them in her own style. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but I wouldn’t describe it as frumpy.

Agree that the look could be improved with heeled boots.

I agree, they are current trends. I've seen links to designers with similar Autumn collections. Someone upthread called it Dark Academia.

I too thought it was frumpy. @ItsAlwaysTwins

Butteredtoast55 · 10/10/2026 09:36

I love that outfit but, unlike you @Maireas I'm a sucker for tartan! If it's navy or green, so much the better (I think I might be trapped in the 80s!)
The whole look is elegant, it suits her and it's very on trend.
