I love that outfit but, unlike you @Maireas I'm a sucker for tartan! If it's navy or green, so much the better (I think I might be trapped in the 80s!)
The whole look is elegant, it suits her and it's very on trend.

😊

I too thought it was frumpy. @ItsAlwaysTwins

Don't look in the shops!

I love some tartan in the winter. I bought a dress last winter with a tartan pattern. Funny thing is that it has to be very cold for me to wear the real thing as in pleated wool. In Wales it just doesn't get that cold.

Boden have a lot of it on-line. 😂

KiIIingMeDeftly · 10/10/2026 10:29

Tartan is having a moment but I don't think Kate's outfit is quite Dark Academia. For that it needs a twist, like the chunky boots it's paired with on the EW website. Maybe it's Light Academia!

Yes, especially with the Gianvanito high heels!

Yes I think it is the high heels that make it frumpy/old fashioned. Otherwise it could have been fashionable use of tartan (although the blouse ... I don't know - a soft cashmere jumper or slightly unbuttoned cardigan maybe ... and her hair in a messy plait ... ).

It looks like the kind of outfit of which my mother would have said "now that's a lovely outfit for the office, Pallisers, very smart"

bluegreygreen · 10/10/2026 15:59

She's at work, so presumably your mother would approve.

I can't imagine why a 'messy plait' would be appropriate for the engagements she was attending yesterday. It wouldn't be particularly respectful to the people she was meeting.

I don't think Gianvito Rossi heels are "frumpy"!
A messy plait? Not Kate's vibe, really.

Yes as I typed that I realised that is exactly the look Catherine goes for at events - something that would make my mother (born 1928) say "now that is a lovely outfit for work. very smart" It isn't particularly stylish to me and I think for a lovely youngish woman she could sometimes be a little less staid. I'm not criticising the woman- just commenting on the style.

The heels aren't frumpy in themselves. Wearing them with a kilt does make the look teeter into it though imo. Mind you I didn't think frumpy when I looked at the outfit.

Yes, I think "a messy plait" is about 2005? I think young women now go for a bun or a high pony.

POW plait isn't a great look recalling last time.

Maybe this is Catherine's way of mixing it up - tartan-ish kilt-ish with dark blue for NI. I'm expecting a green coat next time she's our side of the border. I think the skirt's nice enough but I prefer the plain kilt style cashmere one she wore, I think it was from Johnson's of Elgin. I cant remember when that was.

Claudia could wear tartan and it would look completely trendy and cool. It’s all about the styling. I’d love to see Kate be a bit more stylish or even just slightly fashionable . If she’d worn some flat chunky Bottega Veneta style boots, for example - she’d have looked fab. Those vertiginous courts are so dated.

Basically, she needs a stylist like Claudia’s.

Perhaps in her private life she is edgy. Or maybe like Anne she just doesn't give a damn.

She’s SO not edgy. 😂 I just wish she was a bit more interesting in her clothing.

Whereas I agree that she could do with a stylist, I think the comparison to CW isn't really fair because the two women have very different roles indeed. CW has cornered the kooky and eccentric role, I think Kate is trying to tread a more formal path.
However, I'd like to see Kate mix it up a bit, we've seen some really fantastic evening wear, but I think daywear is a bit hit and miss. However, it even occasionally happens to Leti, Charlene and Rania, so we could probably give her a pass!

Yes @Pallisers.My mother too would say it was smart.
I like tartan
I like the blouse.
But not together with the heels 😂

Eaumyword · 10/10/2026 18:12

Claudia W wore a fabulous short tartan mini, black tights and big black biker boots on Traitors and I swooned -loved her outfit!
I do like a bit of tartan, especially when it's quite punky.
POW can't perhaps do that, but I did like her outfit anyway.

Serenster · 10/10/2026 18:14

Ask yourself would Mary wear it. I doubt it

See, I think this is a look that’s very much in Mary’s wheelhouse. She loves a full midi skirt and a sharp tailored coat, and she also loves court shoes. What she would have done is added a brooch to the lapel of the jacket, which I think would have lifted this look.

It's possible to be interested in fashion and have a safe and conservative style.

And as for Anne, I think anyone who carefully preserves and tends clothes that she first wore 40 years ago does have an interest in what she wears.

I think Catherine and Anne do care and do pay attention, but in a different way than someone like Max, Letizia or Mary.

I'm not keen on Kate's outfit, but then I don't like frilly shirts or tartan. The coat and bag are nice, though.

That outfit was bad & Im not even anti tartan. The shirt is horrible and the skirt is too long with dated shoes. I wish she was a bit more into fashion.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 10/10/2026 18:53

I think she does wear fashionable/on-trend pieces but it's the styling that lets her down at times.
