I have some straight jeans, some girlfriend and some wide leg cords.
Is anyone wearing these or is it all barrel leg and wide legs?
I'm not a slavish follower of fashion and old enough to know styles change. I don't really like being dictated to by fashion but I don't want to look very dated.
I'm a short size 10 and have to be careful not to be swamped.

I have some Whistles linen barrel trousers and they are lovely. Not very wide at all. They are more like slightly tapered at the ankle straight legs. Whistles is slightly out of my price range - they had 20% off the full price of £100- but they fit really well.

I'm not especially keen on barrel jeans bit everyone I see, young and older where I live, are in wide leg jeans.

I have yet to see anyone look good in barrell jeans....... Sorry. They just look like clown trousers. Flattering, they are not.

I am not very fashionable though, so will still wear my skinnies in the Winter with high boots and a big slouchy jumper. I am an unreconstructed child of the eighties.

I do have a relaxed fit, straight, high waisted, vintage jean, from Gap, which is really comfy, and good with trainers and short boots. Tops tucked in.

I also described them as being clown like. I’ve mostly seen them on sizes 12/14 people and it does make anyone look dumpier. They balloon out, why on earth would you add weight illusion if you are carrying weight

NewDogOwner · 18/09/2026 22:10

I just read on a post from (I think) Vogue that skinny jeans are coming back.

Batteriesoptional · 18/09/2026 22:29

I’ve just bought my first pair of skinnies in about 10 years. They arrive on Tuesday.

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/09/2026 22:32

I need to try barrel legged jeans after reading this as being short I thought I would look ridiculous. I wear a pair of fat face wide legged jeans that look great and have a couple of pairs of boyfriend. I also have a couple of pairs of Halara, one really wide and one straight. I live in jeans and still love a straight leg with a baggy t shirt and chunky sandals.

Because size 12/14 people are allowed to wear what the fuck they like, maybe?

And ‘dumpy’ is such a nasty, misogynistic word. One never sees it used against men.

Aleveldilemma · 18/09/2026 23:29

Just ordered the M&S barrel jeans off the back of this thread 🐑
I saw a lady this morning at my tube stop wearing a washed black pair with a similar jacket. She must have been a few year older than me, early 50s, and she looked amazing in her outfit. I couldn’t stop looking at her.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 18/09/2026 23:36

@Aleveldilemma I've just ordered them in chocolate brown. I'm trying to find my fashion mojo again 🤞🏻

Puppylucky · 19/09/2026 17:20

@Keepoffmyartichokes I have them in the deep brown and the heather as well as the silver grey and I love them!

Franxi · 19/09/2026 18:27

I really like barrel leg trousers. I’m pretty straight up and down and they give me a bit of shape. I’m also short. Skinnies look awful on me.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/09/2026 22:46

I’m a big fan of a barrel leg - the Whistles ones were my gateway back in about 2018, but I’m mainly in Abercrombie or Cos pairs now. I also enjoy a wide straight leg (Citizens of Humanity, or again Cos).

I’m a size 10/12 so presumably look “dumpy” and like a clown @Makebelieveanotherlife but actually DGAF 🤡

TealReader · 19/09/2026 23:13

I wear barrels (not really bothered about being dumpy, I like the shape), wide legs, flares, carpenter jeans and straight. Anything bar skinnies. I never liked skinnies and seldom wore them. I have a mix of light blue, indigo, grey, white and black. Also have cords. I like that every shape is available now. For years we only had skinnies.

OtterlyAstounding · 19/09/2026 23:22

I tried on barrel leg jeans recently, and at 5'8 and a size 10, I looked like a rodeo clown 🤣 I like interesting clothing cuts and styles on people, but the more exaggerated barrel legs just look ridiculous and costume-y to me.

Straight leg, medium or indigo wash, mid rise jeans never look dated if styled right, imo, but then I like the classic, clean lines on myself, so they're my go-to now.

(And like a pp, when I was young I used to think skinny jeans were flattering, but now I think they make people's legs look disproportionate and weird.)

Rugrats102 · 19/09/2026 23:32

For those wearing wide and barrel leg jeans, can I ask what shoes you wear with them?

I tend to only go for boyfriend/ mom/ straight leg jeans and wear them with trainers. I live in the countryside and spend half my life on muddy dog walks, for these I wear skinnies as they’re the only thing that works and looks remotely good with wellies.

I’d like to try some barrel or wide leg for when I’m out and about but have no idea what I’d wear them with, particularly when it’s 6 degrees and pissing it down! The good thing about skinnies is they can be worn with any shoe/ boot etc so are great for winter.

I don’t want to be unfashionable, I’m just genuinely perplexed re how to style barrel and wide leg jeans in terms of shoes and coats in the winter!

Hotdoughnut · 19/09/2026 23:39

Can someone please link the m&s barrel that you're all talking about?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/09/2026 23:50

They’re described as mid-rise, but they’re very much high rise on me.

I wear mainly trainers like Sambas and Spezials, NB 574, but also Birkenstock Boston clogs and DM Church boots.

Skinny jeans always looked really horrible on my pear shaped body, and I found them far harder to style shoe-wise other than with knee-high or calf-length boots.

hereforsociologicalreasons · 20/09/2026 01:28

I tend to wear a lot of baggy low waisted, a bootcut low waisted or on occasion a straight leg but again in a low waist.

Trainers or a heeled boot! but I do live in a city so understand that may not be possible in the country side. You can always buy a barrel or straight leg and if you find them too long, get them taken up at the bottom.

Myremoteislost · 20/09/2026 07:55

I am pear shaped so barrel jeans absolutely do not work on me! My favourite pair are some medium wash straight jeans from Matalan. Jeans are so personal and different shapes and washes suit different people, so I've always found it difficult to follow jean trends.
I love cords! I have these ones and they look lovely on https://www.marksandspencer.com/cord-pintuck-wide-leg-trousers/p/clp61223032?color=NAVY#intid=pid_pg1pip48g2r3c2

I have embraced the barrel! I am 5ft 3 but have long legs so think they look ok! I have indigo wide leg and boot cut for nights out. I used to live in jeggings and found a pair the other day. I tried them on and they felt really suffocating/restrictive!

I haven’t the first clue what is ‘in’, nor do I care. I just wear one of th3 ol£ pears I have had for years. They’re just jeans. Who cares?

Why do you put yourself through the trauma of posting on a style and beauty board?! Must be quite difficult here for someone who does not care about any of this stuff!

TableSett · 20/09/2026 08:26

I am five 2 and am surprised at how much I like my Uniqlo barrel jeans. I also wear wide-legged ones. I loved my skinnies in the 90s but can’t imagine wearing them again for some time.

ANNotherWriter · 20/09/2026 08:48

I'm not into barrel leg.

More interested in opinions on wide leg. They are what everyone seems to wear, even with formal trousers.
