Is a Hobbs trench coat sensible choice for everyday wear? My 50th is coming up and want to splurge on nice coat!

It’s my 50th birthday next month and I would
like to treat myself to this new coat. I’d love to hear from anyone who has one before I take the (very costly) plunge! I’m more of a second hand clothes person so this is a big thing for me😂
I’m 5ft 2 and around a size 8/10 and am mostly to found in t-shirts, jeans and smarties trainers. I also go for dark colours out of practicality but I love the tan and I have red hair so hoping it will suit me?
Is it worth it? Will the tan cost me loads in dry cleaning?? I’ve promised myself not to wear it walking the dog but just on a daily going to the office, shopping, social, general life basis

I find tan doesn’t show dirt as much as you’d think, and I say this as a certified dirt magnet.

I have almost identical but M&S, it’s ideal for autumn and spring when you need just a bit extra.

If deffo investment it's an absolute staple U can wear anything with it joggers leggings dresses wide leg trousers just seems to make a outfit work !!
Get one that fits u perfect and u feel amazing in it took me ages to find this one !!

I have 3 trench coats and I hardly wear them if I'm honest.

I buy them because they look great on the model and in the changing room swishing about. And I think they'll look great. They're actually really boring looking especially in beige and they don't go with dresses because it gives the air of a flasher.

They are too warm for summer and too cold for winter. They need to be roomy enough for a warm jumper in the winter and then you start getting into inspector gadget territory. Plus if it rains which is does a lot in the UK you get wet really quickly

I can only wear them for about 4 weeks in a year.

If you must buy one don't get beige. Get olive green or navy or maroon. Much more interesting!

I've got the Hobbs trench. I love it.

However, I hardly wear it because I find it's too heavy for warm weather, and if it's cold it's usually rainy or risk of rain, so I always go for a hooded waterproof instead. Like the previous poster said!

I'm still glad I have it but it's not "everyday" for me.

Trenchcoats are certainly versatile but I don't like back pleats in a coat as in this one, rather than a vent

I think a longer length looks better, more classic and more practical. I’m about your height and size and found a great one on Vinted which comes mid calf. I sized down from my usual size. You can pick them up very cheaply on Vinted so you could try it out and see how much you wear it.

It’s a bit too neat looking for me. I prefer the long oversized ones or the cropped ones, both of which I think look a bit more interesting and are easier to pair with a range of outfits.

Having said that, if you tend towards a classic style it could be a good investment.

I have this in petite. Wear it loads in spring and autumn. To work and over jeans at the weekend. Timeless, I have had mine for years.

I have two vintage trench coats, one tan/beige (the trench colour) and the other one, also made of gabardine, that looks like dark denim. They are both extremely versatile and I wear them often. I post my outfits here for accountability (low buy/no buy pledge) so you can actually see them in my thread if you like. A good quality trench coat is a good purchase imo.

Dry cleaning is s consideration, I do this every second year and it’s quite expensive (at least in Sweden). But I get excellent CPW from my coats so it’s still better in the long run than buying a new trendy coat every year.

it has a stain on the belt but maybe you could try it on and even see what a dry cleaners would charge for it to be clean. You could even chuck it in the wash and if it survives. You would probably get most of your money back if you re sold it.

It looks like this stain can be removed at home with baking soda. Don’t take my word for that but the Vinted one would also be my first choice for environmental reasons.

Yes it probably would. I mentioned the dry cleaners as the OP said she didn’t know if it would be expensive to dry clean.

I have a similar trench. I wore it yesterday but I hardly wear it because it's often raining. I wish there were more hooded trenches.

I have a bright Hobbs trench (bought from Ebay) and love it!
It’s definitely a mid-season coat but works well for lots of occasions.

I have a couple of trench coats (including one with a hood!) and wear them a lot.

I have a Hobbs trench and I love it. I am just a bit more careful i.e. check a seat is clean before I sit down. I have had it a while and haven't had to dry clean it, just occasional spot clean.
