Is a Hobbs trench coat sensible choice for everyday wear? My 50th is coming up and want to splurge on nice coat!

It’s my 50th birthday next month and I would
like to treat myself to this new coat. I’d love to hear from anyone who has one before I take the (very costly) plunge! I’m more of a second hand clothes person so this is a big thing for me😂
I’m 5ft 2 and around a size 8/10 and am mostly to found in t-shirts, jeans and smarties trainers. I also go for dark colours out of practicality but I love the tan and I have red hair so hoping it will suit me?
Is it worth it? Will the tan cost me loads in dry cleaning?? I’ve promised myself not to wear it walking the dog but just on a daily going to the office, shopping, social, general life basis
Thanks for your thoughts! www.hobbs.com/product/skylar-trench-coat/0125-3920-9057L00-TAN.html

That's a nice coat but Sezane have some lovely oversized trench coats that I think look more stylish. I wear a trench coat every day to work for generally September, October, March and April, often into May, so I think they're super useful. I'd try and find something a bit more camel than beige as I think darker is, again, a bit more stylish. https://www.sezane.com/en-en/product/scott-trench-coat/camel#size-4

Both those are gorgeous!

amidsummernightsdream · 18/09/2026 11:29

Definitely agree this shorter style looks dated, longer length much better.
I do clean mine a lot but its worth it as goes with lots of things/ easy to wear.
However, i would say i get much more wear in spring than this time of year as when the temp drops i’ll be straight into my winter coat.

pinkpony88 · 18/09/2026 12:07

I have this in baby blue, bought last year or the year before. I don’t wear it as much as some other coats I have but I love it and feel like someone much posher than I am with it on 🤣 It gets a lot of compliments.

I am short waisted and look crap in a coat with a tie

I actually never fasten mine. If it’s chilly I have a scarf which looks nice with the coat to keep my neck and chest warm. I just tied the belt loosely at the back.

You need to try it on - beige can be tricky and it might wash you out. You won't know until you see it on. If you want to consider other brands at a similar price point I would consider Barbour, which in my experience are really well-made. Practical points - it will be showerproof rather than waterproof and you will still need a brolly! Fashion point, if you care - the fashion at the moment is for a trench to be a little longer and oversized, but this may not suit you. I wear a man's trench coat that I bought second-hand, but I'm much taller than you.

Edited to add: I would get one which can be washed at 30 degrees rather than faffing about with dry-cleaning. The Barbour ones can. You can wash it in NikWax which will improve the water resistance.

I have a Hobbs petite trench from a few years ago, slightly different styling.

I wasn’t sure if it would be worth it, if I’d get my moneys worth, but it’s been a workhorse.

it helps I walk to/from work so it is a nice extra layer when it’s just a bit of a chill in the mornings, but not downpour. It goes with jeans a trainers.

I said on another thread about trenches, they are good for the sort of weather you might have thrown on a denim jacket. So a bit of another layer needed, not a full on coat, not a proper rain Mac.

I’m not sure I’d pay more than for the Hobbs one over the £95 M&S one. I’d compare fabrics (weight matters) and how close they are to a Burberry original. So storm flap, neck fastening and epaulettes. Look for a decent lining too. I’d possibly go for the M&S one and buy a cashmere pullover with the money saved. The M&S one might be a bit long for you though.

I have this Hobbs trench in navy and love it - the fit is superb and works with work trousers or jeans. Unfortunately it's not very warm so it's not great in the depths of winter but it's perfect for cool days when a smart coat is needed. You're only 50 once and everyone deserves one nice coat!

I think a longer length looks better, more classic and more practical. I’m about your height and size and found a great one on Vinted which comes mid calf. I sized down from my usual size. You can pick them up very cheaply on Vinted so you could try it out and see how much you wear it.

Agree. I got a similar one in Hobbs last Autumn. The length hasn’t worked as well as i thought it would. I’m still reaching for my older mid/calf one. Depends on your height and what you want to wear with it. It is still a beautiful coat and gets lots of compliments when I do find the right outfit for it!

LadyValerie · 18/09/2026 17:53

I like a trench but agree this one is dated, the fashion currently is for them to be longer and a bit oversized.

InADayOrTwo · 18/09/2026 17:57

Oversized coats look ridiculous on me - it's a bit depressing feeling like people think you look crap because you wear something that fits Sad

I'm thinking the same about the price in different shops. Sometimes it could be a case of you think it's more stylish/better quality/an 'investment' because it costs more, not because it's objectively better quality.

I have an old M&S trench coat that's likely the same one that they're currently selling for £80 and it seems perfectly well made etc so I can't see how one that looks the same but costs £219 from Hobbs is worth so much more.

I don't particularly like any of them, I just feel obliged to have a vaguely smart looking coat for work when visiting clients. I certainly wouldn't be buying myself one as a big birthday treat.

CortieTat · 18/09/2026 18:40

I think you should try on this coat OP before dismissing it as dated - it’s likely to be longer on you so a standard length of a classic car coat - they are hardly dated because the length serves a function.

I wouldn’t invest in an oversized trench right now, they were the hype already several years ago and now even Sézane is replacing their baggy Clyde with smaller, more structured models. An in-between version, like a larger size of a classic cut trench is likely to work for more than one or two seasons.

I have this exact coat and I love it. Finally spent the money and got a hobbs coat!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 18/09/2026 23:19

@LadyValerie The classic Burberry Trench is still the classic style and as the Op is short, over sized would be ludicrous. A neater traditional one would be much better for a shorter person. M

Since when is Sezanne the arbiter of trench coat design? Burberry invented them.

I have 3 trench coats and I hardly wear them if I'm honest.

I buy them because they look great on the model and in the changing room swishing about. And I think they'll look great. They're actually really boring looking especially in beige and they don't go with dresses because it gives the air of a flasher.

They are too warm for summer and too cold for winter. They need to be roomy enough for a warm jumper in the winter and then you start getting into inspector gadget territory. Plus if it rains which is does a lot in the UK you get wet really quickly

I can only wear them for about 4 weeks in a year.

If you must buy one don't get beige. Get olive green or navy or maroon. Much more interesting!

Sadly this is correct 😔

Hi @Pieandmashtwice50

I’ve got the Hobbs Saskia trench in navy & really like it. Am also 50, size 8 (though am 5’ 5”) & it’s a good length on me. I think Hobbs do a petite range…

I can’t remember why I preferred the Saskia to this one now 🤔 I’ve had mine a few years & have had it dry cleaned at the end of each winter, it’s worn really well. Go for it! And happy 50th 🥳

Pieandmashtwice50 · 19/09/2026 07:56

Thanks everyone, very helpful feedback! Going to check out the M&S one and take a trip to Hobbs to try one on 😊

I got a bright purple one in the sale in Hobbs last year, I also got a red one on Vinted that has a detachable hood, which is more useful. They had it in beetroot pink last year and I really wanted it as it was such a lovely colour.

Travellingshoes · 19/09/2026 10:15

I’m a similar height and size to you (also age). I treated myself to one of these a couple of years ago. I’ve worn it a few times. :-)) It looks and feels great quality but I feel it makes me look quite bulky and the sleeves are too long, I have been folding them inside the sleeve as I’m too stingy to get them shortened.

Me too. I’m 5’1 and an 8/10 so the oversized style makes me look like I’m a preschooler wearing my mum’s clothes 😂
