Can anyone recommend a genuinely waterproof coat/jacket?

I have a rain jacket from a well known outdoor shop, was not cheap, which is NOT waterproof as I found out to my cost on a recent holiday when caught in a downpour. The seams leaked so I was soaked through. Can anyone recommend a genuine waterproof which you can roll up and put in a backpack for holidays/ walking trip?

I’ve very recently bought a jacket called Solstice from Mountain Warehouse that so far does seem to do what it says it does. ie 100% waterproof.
I chose it because of its longer length. It also has long sleeves! (Or maybe I have short arms) It easily packs up small.

Lots of jackets and coats are showerproof and not to be confused with waterproof?

Was it 'waterproof' or 'showerproof'? Did you wash it?

I have a Berghaus and it keeps me dry in downpours. Only the parts of me it covers though.

I have a Rab Gortex jacket. Wasn’t cheap at £300 but it’s a great jacket. Folds into itself to fit in backpacks etc. Whatever brand you choose make sure it’s Goretex which is waterproof, windproof and breathable. It’s also important to reroof waterproofs every six months or so.

I'd try getting some proofing spray and spraying it all over it and particularly the seams. It should help

All the Seasalt coats, especially Janelle and Planthunter. Great quality. Maybe not very stylish.

@gerispringer , if you wash the coats, they won't always be impermeable afterwards, and you might need to re-proof. Waterproofing - Nikwax or similar spray.

If you wash 'technical' clothes like coats and fitness clothes, don't use fabric conditioner.

They might not be stylish (it's a brand popular with farmers, so practicality over style is a must), and they can be expensive, depending on your budget, but Ridgeline of New Zealand. They keep me dry in awful weather! A bulkier option that is fairly popular is Kaiwaka.

Lululemon rain rebel.

I have heard good things about the Rains Long Jacket. It is properly waterproof, has taped seams and a good hood, while still looking smart enough for everyday wear. Definitely worth considering if you want something that can handle proper rain rather than just a light shower.

I have this Alaskan Women's 3 in 1 long waterproof jacket from Mountain Warehouse, and can guarantee that it is definitely waterproof, not just showerproof. It is also nice and warm.

Rohan make excellent kit, but check what its spec’ed for.

I bought a waterproof black Animal jacket from Mountain Warehouse last Monday & actually got caught in heavy rain while wearing it last Tuesday- it is definitely waterproof! It cost under £60 (it was reduced then I got more discount with my blue light card so actually paid £49.99!).
Yesterday I took it out with me & it’s very light so it rolled up easily and I put it in a shoulder bag.

Also because it’s so light it dries quickly.
I like the style of it - it’s a bit more ‘urban’ looking than many MW jackets which are more ‘hiking style’.
