Can anyone recommend a genuinely waterproof coat/jacket?

I have a rain jacket from a well known outdoor shop, was not cheap, which is NOT waterproof as I found out to my cost on a recent holiday when caught in a downpour. The seams leaked so I was soaked through. Can anyone recommend a genuine waterproof which you can roll up and put in a backpack for holidays/ walking trip?

Sea salt Janelle . Not particularly stylish but does the job and is long enough to cover my clothes

It was from Rohan don't know the name. Its destined for the charity bag.

Did they say it was waterproof? If so return it. Rohan aren’t cheap.

Look for coats that are labelled ‘waterproof’ not ‘showerproof’. There’s a difference. In waterproof coats, the seams are stitched, and you can have coats that withstand different levels of water. All camping and outdoor shops sell the, - Go outdoors, Cotswold, Mountain Warehouse, Regatta, Trepass etc.

@BeOchreDog is correct.

You need to check the mm rating which is usually advertised online and on the ticket attached to the jacket. Anything less than 10,000 is showerproof only, but you need to look for something that’s at least 15,000 to survive a proper downpour.

You DON’T have to pay silly money for a big brand name though, lesser known brands are just as good. It’s the MM rating that’s important.

Both my Rains coats are totally waterproof.

Check the waterproof rating and make sure they have taped seams.

my Paramo is completely waterproof. It’s an outdoorsy / hiking type coat though so not stylish in a city-wear sense

Seasalt. Not super trendy but also not awful. Just classic, long line fully waterproof coats with hoods. Designed for walking in squally weather by the sea.

I have a rain poncho I use when hiking. In torrential weather it kept the rain off 100%. But I got hot inside it, so damp from sweat, but not as drenched as I would have been.

Regatta are windproof and waterproof.

I agree I have a few of these and they're all very good in the rain. And last for years without looking too shabby. Trouble is you never want to get rid of any of them.

My Berghaus one has always done the job.

I’ve very recently bought a jacket called Solstice from Mountain Warehouse that so far does seem to do what it says it does. ie 100% waterproof.
I chose it because of its longer length. It also has long sleeves! (Or maybe I have short arms) It easily packs up small.

So the water runs off nicely onto mid thigh and below? I had this one - my trousers fell down because they were sodden from midthigh down.

HollyhocksandPeons · 19/09/2026 11:47

Whatever you buy, buy ankle length. I had a perfectly waterproof coat and was caught in a proper rain up North, my trousers fell down, they were sodden from midthigh and below, awful experience. Never again.

Didriksons

Agree , they are definitely waterproof ( have been in many a downpour high on a cumbrian fell ) and they keep you perfectly dry .
They would also fit your brief for rolling up and putting in a backpack as they are not hard but a nice soft fabric .

Another vote for Didrikson. While it is true that you can't guarantee every coat from a certain brand will be waterproof (of course not), if Didrikson say the coat is waterproof, it will be. Not cheap (understatement of the year) but the only place I go to now for warm or waterproof coats that you can still throw into the washing machine.

One caveat: their hoods tend to be generous. Sometimes bordering on too big, but the benefits outweigh this, for me.

I had a waxed coat from Barbour and it was really waterproof.
