What are your thoughts on these shoes?

Myrtle

Myrtle is a women's apron derby, styled like a boat shoe but super chunky on our round toed 648 last. Her upper is made from polished black colorado leather and Myrtle has handsewn apron and feature lace detailing.

TERRIBLE. Look like school uniform shoes.
Was that the look you were going for? You could perhaps style with a grey pleated skirt that you role up several times at the waist, plus a too large black blazer with a school badge.

I don't particularly like those, but I have a pair of Grenson brogue boots - the "Ella"

And their version of the Mary Jane, the "Yasmin."

https://www.grenson.com/yasmin-womens-captoe-in-pale-grey-leather-on-leather-sole/

The boots replace a beautiful pair of Bally Boots that were very similar that I've had for around 25 years - I only needed to replace them because my feet seem to keep growing! (I walk everywhere).

The quality is fantastic and for the price, they're excellent value. The staff in their Soho shop are fantastic & the aftercare is exemplary.

Really beautifully made shoes. All leather, hand stitched, and so so comfortable & stylish. I expect my boots to last me till I turn up my toes & die.

Ella; womens brogue boot in black calf leather with a leather sole. With wing tip brogue details, Ellas is a simple but class boot. Free worldwide returns.

Love my Grenson’s
Such good quality and very comfortable, not heavy at all

StylishAndBeautiful · 05/09/2026 16:32

@Tortephant , it's a really good brand and some of mine were Toast collaborations. MHL and YMC have done collaborations too, and Plumo sometimes sells them.

When I wear one of the pairs (Toast Jade, see image) someone will say how nice they are, and I've had them for years. Mine have kept their shape and the soles look almost as good as new. They're based on the Astronaut boots.

Basically they are what DMs were before DM became a fashion brand.
They are classics.

As for the 'sole of air' name, Grenson is from 'William Green & Son'.

With wide trousers they would look like clergeries. So good with our weather too - I think they are fantastic!

Loghabit · 05/09/2026 16:51

Boat shoes make me want to gag, so many badly dressed men still wearing them.

7238SM · 05/09/2026 16:53

They look like something a teen emo or goth would wear.

I'm late 40's and can't image any circumstance where I would wear something like that- even when I was a teen. If you like them OP, then crack on.

thesugarbumfairy · 05/09/2026 17:05

They.re not for me but they don't offend me in anyway. Comfy. Well made. Will probably get comfier with wear.
I took my son to the Solovair outlet to get his prom shoes and they were a bargain. Sold as seconds because they had a small crease across the front. Sadly they didn't have any sandals in the outlet in my size because I do like those.

Never heard of solovair, and only looked them up because of your post.

  1. the brand name doesn’t sound British at all so I’d never have considered them, it’s awful.
  2. made in the region of good British shoes so happy to take that seriously, but the designs are something from the 80s. Not a take on that, just exceptional old fashioned and not in a retro way.

interesting. But.

Solovair sounds like an English Art Deco brand to me

JulesJules · 05/09/2026 18:01

I don't like the ones pictured, not a fan of the boat shoe look, but I think chunky shoes themselves are great.

D1 has solovairs which she lives in and finds incredibly comfortable.

LimpRat · 05/09/2026 18:05

I tried some of their boots and they were really heavy, stiff and way too narrow in the front foot area. Which is a shame, because I like how their boots look. But I couldn't wear them.

Ooooh sick burn

quirkychick · 05/09/2026 18:14

I have no experience of Grensons, but they look great. I'm not usually sure of boat shoes, but like that take on them. I like chunky boots and shoes - I'm quite tall and medium build, so find they're a good proportion for me.

AndyKitten · 05/09/2026 18:18

I would get Solovair or Lanx instead of Grenson.

The influencers spoiled them for me.

Bromatic · 05/09/2026 18:20

Have had a couple of pairs - those are right up my skinny ankled street but I never found them comfy. Hard and unyielding soles and sides. Have them to a charity shop and bought less lively looking but much comfier shoes.

Vicliz24 · 05/09/2026 18:23

I have Grenson boots very comfortable and very light despite being chunky but also rather large . I get round it with thick socks but wish I’d gone down a size .

Keep an eye on the Outlet site. What are the prices like in the factory shop?

Loghabit · 05/09/2026 20:16

I have the Nanette’s but they were not a love!

Vaguelyclassical · 05/09/2026 20:17

Skinhead's girlfriend's shoes, around 1971.
Whimper.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/09/2026 20:22

I have several pairs, they’re lighter than they look. Beautifully constructed, really a joy to own.

JennyForeigner · 05/09/2026 20:29

I discovered the Solovair seconds shop a year or so ago thanks to Mumsnet. I have a pair of boots and a pair of loafers and both are the first shoes that I believe - and want - to last me for life.

I had a meeting in a bizarrely posh context recently and wore the loafers. It was almost as though the rest of the outfit was a free pass because I had the right shoes Grin

StylishAndBeautiful · 05/09/2026 20:29

Loghabit · 05/09/2026 20:16

I have the Nanette’s but they were not a love!

They never appealed to me but they were popular. I have the Solovair Urban Hiker boots, which I didn't think I'd like but they are cute, sort of monkey boot styled as hiking boots. I might sell them as I have far too many boots.
I also have the monkey boots, dealer boots and derby boots.
The dealer boots are my go tos but the monkey boots are lovely.

StylishAndBeautiful · 05/09/2026 20:42

We get it don't we. You've put my sentiment into words.
I have a pair of hand-made men's shoes that I was persuaded to try on by a charity shop volunteer. Smart, leather soles and uppers, fit like gloves and cost me £5!

They were too annoying to put on and take off but I struggle to let them go. I persuaded dh to get a pair of Solovair chelsea boots - he always hated them, I think you need to find a brand that suits you foot shape.

StylishAndBeautiful · 06/09/2026 11:30

@Loghabit , fit is important. I don't really like chelsea boots on men but I can't pinpoint why.

I had a look for my Grenson boots and I'd forgotten how beautiful they were. The laces can be tiresome to tie though but I dislike boots with laces and a zip.
