Hello…

Please help a completely unfashionable & unstylish mum who lives in trainers here… my daughter has just started sixth form and the dress code is “business wear”… we’re ok for suit/jackets etc. but where on earth can you buy nice shoes to wear with a skirt these days? She’s usually mooching around barefoot or in wellies or trainers and possibly the result is she has biggish and quite wide feet (7-7.5) so the current pointy styles look a bit huge Confused. She’s also very self conscious of having “strong” calves so wants heels not flats (flats would be so much easier Hmm).

Also she will be travelling by bus and train so they need to be fairly practical…and comfy!

Can anyone please help us find the shoe that fits magical combination of requirements?! Confused

I work in a very corporate office and office footwear is varied.

I already posted about my mary jane crocs on another thread https://www.crocs.co.uk/p/classic-ballet/211994.html?cid=001&sid=W7&adid=performancemax_google_uk_UKPMaxGoogleCatchAll_x_x_x&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=16626204882&gclid=Cj0KCQjw--7UBhCpARIsAGJBpthexHoBd4_ZyjhRX57R3Z61WdPIPXTWV4eaDe4Umze5Wot97m4_HwkaAuNLEALw_wcB which I wear all the time no matter whether Im in a dress, trousers or skirt! (theyre baby pink btw so I dont even match them to my clothes, lol).

I used to buy my shoes for work from office. They have plenty to choose from, but DM mary janes are cool imo, Im not a huge fan on heels in work - accident risk is too high imo. Court shoes are a goof option, but if shes used to being in trainers, then a decent pair of sneakerinas would work. Get her to try them on so they fit properly.

Crocs do not belong at work, unless you are wearing the ones without holes as part of medical uniform.

Just... no.

What are her friends wearing?

I have size 4 feet and some of my shoes would definitely not look great on a child!

Me too! (And I think size 7's look like shoes for men in women's clothes)

You’re a charmer aren’t you? The point is once shoes are on they just look normal. When they are on a shelf or by the door we are all used to looking at our own size and in our mind on initial glance we think that is ‘right’. So if you have small feet bigger sizes look big but if you have big feet smaller sizes look small.

The OP clearly has smaller feet than her daughter it’s as simple as that. Both I’m sure have lovely feet that look lovely in shoes. But her discounting styles because her daughter has bigger feet is not going to do anything for her confidence and is wrong.

I definitely do not judge people for having smaller feet than me, but that doesn’t seem to apply the other way.

@Satisfiedwithanapple "that doesn't seem to apply the other way". I mentioned it only because another poster was body shaming small feet.

Well business attire in office seems to mostly include trainers! The younger folk would also wear brogues or DMs /similar style of ankle boots. Lots of wide leg trousers and T-shirt type tops. I’d buy her a couple of good pairs of trousers and several tops that can be mixed and matched, most things go with black or navy!

I can pretty much guarantee your colleagues are laughing at you!

DD wears some patent Mary Janes from M&S. Purchased for Year 12 and still going strong in Y13!

She's a size 8, wide feet, tall and athletic with sturdy legs. She wears them with skirts and trousers, and they seem to be acceptable for a fashion-conscious teen.

Sge has also pretty much hit a ‘uniform’ and after the first couple of weeks of Y12 when everyone was treating school like a fashion parade, most of her friends have done the same. She wears wide legged trousers or just above knee pencil skirt with loose shirt buttoned up over a fitted tee/vest top. She has to have a collar (stupid) but abandoned the Zara blazer I bought her early on. I thought it was stylish but she rolled her eyes and said ‘Mum, nobody wears blazers’ 😆

StripeyPJs · 06/09/2026 08:18

Excuse typos! Meant to say shirt half buttoned up.

Holdinguphalfthesky · 06/09/2026 08:19

I agree with the suggestions for DM flats. They tend to be bulletproof once you get the fit right- use insoles if necessary and don’t go barefoot!! High heels will be wrong for her commute and wrong for walking around the school, she’ll be miserable especially as she usually wears wellies.

Those DM loafers in a pp are really nice and are the sort of thing worn by my friend’s 22yo daughter in her job at an architectural practice. Definitely more the sort of thing th others will be wearing.

Ditto her clothes. Short skirts and wide trousers that they can make slouchy are definitely the thing around here in the sixth forms, unless they’re still in an actual uniform. She can still follow the letter of the dress code and not feel as if she’s wearing a costume.

Wide leg trousers, dms and a wool jumper/top kind of thing
