Status but every day handbag

MademoisellePraline · 29/08/2026 23:09

I've decided to treat myself, but I don't know where to start.

Firstly I don't know what else to call the kind of bag I'm after, hence "status" bag. I like Chanel, LV, which I know some fashionistas like to sneer at, so please, if that's you, respect that we all have different preferences.

I'm looking for a lovely every day bag, that I don't look stupid with on the school run etc. We live rurally, and didn't before, so all my Chanel and LV with chain straps etc would look majorly over done and I'd feel ridiculous wandering round town on casual shop with one. I do sometimes take my neverful but I'd like something much smaller. Slouchy and comfy as opposed to stiff leather.

What's a casual but still "status" bag that I could go for? I don't like massive gold logos etc like the GG Gucci bags, or the ones with big YSLs down the front. I would like it to be recognisable as branded, but from close up, not from across the street if you see what I mean.

Thank you.

Nor do I. It's almost like women can't possibly just like nice bags and instead everything must been done with a view to what other people will think of them, although I accept that the OP clearly cares and so what?

I have everything from Chanel and LV to TopShop, vintage no name beaded numbers and a particular ratty old cotton Miss Selfridge shopper with the lining torn, but in a beautiful floral print. I bought them all because I like them, and I'm not going to apologise or feign some ridiculous embarassment because some of them were expensive.

I'm not even really a bag person. Don't get me started on how many hats I own 😀

On this thread it’s more that the OP cares that the brand is obviously recognisable.

Balenciaga is dismissed on the basis “Also, I wouldn't know that particular brand was any kind of brand.”

The brand recognition seems to be more important than the loveliness of the bag.

Anyway of the bags on the thread I’d have the Puzzle or Prada as they are lovely. The Puzzle tote would be great for work.

I think I would genuinely buy every bag listed on this thread if I could!

What beautiful pieces!

I know. So tempting...

certainlycertain · 30/08/2026 16:06

I have to admit, despite not being a huge handbag person, I'm currently coveting this. Just don't know how much use I'd get out of it. But it's a classic style, right?

I think you would always be able to use it. It’s also a beautiful colour.

Sounds like You want something that’s more country - brands like:

Fairfax & Favour - Langham? Town & Country? Richmond? Tetbury?
Dubarry - Crossgar, Balrickard?
Howes & Wayko - Erin?
Mullberry - Alexa?

Maybe Coach Brooklyn?

MademoisellePraline · 29/08/2026 23:59

Ooh that's lovely in the green suede, but I reckon I need the medium in that size and that's £4k on a shopping handbag. It's going to have baby wipes, biros, purse, phone, likely snacks half eaten and wrapped...

Also, I wouldn't know that particular brand was any kind of brand.

I think £1200 - £1800 is a good range, and if there's a site where I can get an authenticated second hand one, bonus.

Why are you so insistent on a brand for the school run??
Hasn't anyone ever told you that less is more?

SocksAndTheCity · 30/08/2026 16:19

Maybe they did @HarshbutTrue2 , and maybe the OP doesn't agree with them?

These are exactly the sort of comments that make me want to dress from head to toe in Burberry check and stride around town with a logo print LV hanging off each arm. And one of those mobile phone cases with the big diamante things on it 😀

Handbags are definitely not the only symbol but one piece of the whole picture. The typical other things are hair, weight, teeth, watch, shoes, nails, makeup etc. I have a theory that those wealth symbols are mostly a way of signalling how interesting, powerful or influential you are as a person. They are not actually superficial but designed to make others curious about you and want to build connections. These connections might open doors or opportunities down the road that prove to be quite significant.

It comes from the fact that having loads of money is not common or easy. And therefore anyone with a significant display of wealth must have an interesting back story, an interesting career, an interesting family or of course, married to someone with the same criteria. It's more of a social peacock display designed to make others wonder about your life. And of course, wealthy people only open up to similar minded people so by dressing a certain way, you signal to them you're part of their tribe. And that's the only way you can find out what their source of wealth is (this sounds superficial but it's more about natural human curiosity).

It's no surprise that wealthy people tend to flock together. In every community, the high earners somehow end up knowing each other. As mentioned earlier, this can be genuinely useful. We've know people who lend out their holiday homes for free, dentists who give free treatments, lawyers offering free advice etc. It's not unethical if the person genuinely wants to do something for a close friend but will charge for the same service from a stranger. Some of these connections might have originated from something as trivial as carrying a certain bag in a certain place.

All the COL and "how do they afford it" threads on MN miss out the huge glaring fact that the richer someone is, the more things they actually don't need to pay for. They have friends in high positions from nearly every industry and they're happy to give things or services for free. Or for cost price which is a fraction of what normal people pay.

I thought we were talking about the school run!

Maybe OP should be worrying about what car to turn up in.

Is this a private or state school?

Not very status but I love my Guibert Polo

It is deceptively spacious and I can get my iPad in there too. Very understated looks but gorgeous soft leather. I've been using it daily for a couple of years now and it still looks like new.

Indeed - sadly too long ago for the diamanté mobile phone case but it’s definitely a look

I was just glancing through the net a porter preview and noting that heeled knee boots are having a big comeback... 😅

BlueJellycat · 30/08/2026 17:20

One mum at school drives a wrapped Ferrari and another a Rolls Royce. No one needs to look at their handbags to see if its genuine wealth in reply to comments above.

I have a Mulberry but it's not slouchy. It's a bugger actually to hold. But I'm poor and I don't mean relatively. I don't take a bag on the school run. Just my four year old Andriod tucked in my bra. But if I did and cared for this I'd get a Gucci tote.

MademoisellePraline · 30/08/2026 17:21

I love that I want a less flashy but still identifiable (to me) slouchy bag for round town/shops/school run. Not too heavy, not too similar to what I've got. Not too much because it's going to be packed with Crayola and baby wipes, and some nobbers still have to be "ohhhhhh she's obsessed with the brand". Not like me, with my superior disinterest in all things material. Maybe they are too pleased with themselves to realise thanks to the knowledge of the fashion hive here, I'm getting a couple from a make I'd never heard of

Perhaps, it's just I think there's some lovely bags been presented, and some to me, ugly ones. But they are all in the eye of the beholder and it's nice to be nice when declining a suggestion that's someone's taken the time and care to put forward.

"Don't really know that brand...."

My question wasn’t intended like that at all - it was more a question about why if you like the bag you couldn’t have it unless it had the correct status symbol attached. That’s the bit I found confusing. I like handbags, I have lots of very high end (again never with the visible bling logos) but if I saw one that I genuinely loved and fit what I was looking for, I wouldn’t not buy it because it wasn’t enough of a status symbol, if that makes sense.

I understand loving handbags, loving certain brands, but some of your posts sounded like you felt you couldn’t buy bag X even though you liked it because it doesn’t have the right status. That’s what I found strange, but I apologise if I misunderstood your wording.

I'm pretty certain I'm going for Demellier...

Can't stand Fairfax and Favour. I know a couple of the Fountaine boys, family home not far from us. Lovely chap, Marcus. Not so lovely bags 😁

Dubarry I didn't know did bags though, I have their standard boots but never looked further into the brand. Off to Google....

Was yours the soft medium? Those look nice. I quite fancy the Dress-Age.

Yes, in ebony. Really love it. Also love the Dressage. I think their bags are under rated!

Another vote for Demlier here, I have the New York and just got the Sienna bucket, they are really nice quality and look so much more expensive than they are, I get so many compliments on them. I think the quality is better than YSL etc.

Sorry but I have to disagree with this. All of the wealthiest people I have known, you would not know them apart from a farmer. Think about some of the pictures that have been published of Charles on his estates back in the day with Diana. The ones I know wear clothes from charity shops and muddy wellies and drive around in old cars (although, yes, classics but not a Bentley or Rolls unless it’s a special occasion).

They might “flock” with other wealthy people, but saying things like “Oh yes, my father’s orchard has really suffered this year with the heat, we absolutely had to get away to St Moritz for a few weeks. I would have stayed longer but DH had to get back to check over the architectural plans for the place we’re having built in Surrey” etc is another way people can glimpse your wealth without you having to wear it.

I have actually found that a desire to downplay one’s wealth can be more of an indicator of higher levels of wealth than what you are talking about. Eg, if you have been raised in the royal family, what connections do you need to make that your family don’t already have?

MrsBrianJones · 30/08/2026 19:38

Hermes Trim or Evelyne sound perfect for your needs. Classic design but not too flashy, works with casual beautifully and definitely fly under the radar more than a Kelly or Birkin, plus far cheaper. If you go vintage from a reputable reseller, you can find some good prices.

You can fit plenty in these bags too, they're very useful.

I just got the sienna so too early to tell but my NY is my work bag so that probably will end up being used more. I love that it isn’t an obvious brand but those who know know. I also love Toteme for this, they have a belted bucket tote that could work for you too
