To pierce or not?

I‘m turning 40 later this year.

I‘ve always been into alternate music and fashion. But you wouldn’t really know to look at me. I‘m a teacher, wear floral dresses or jeans and t shirts.

I really want to get a piercing. I think it would be called a low labret. About a centimetre under my lower lip. It would be quite shocking to most people around me, but not to those who know me personally.

Has anyone else done this? Is this my mid life crisis talking?

I have several cartilage piercings ( faith, tragus, forward helix) as well as lobes. My mid life crisis 😀and I'm planning one or two more.
Not got any facial ones . What attracts you to a labret piercing?
Have you tried ( at home) sticking a gem ( places like Claire's used to sell them for festivals and the like) on your lip and seeing how you like it before you commit?

My DD has a nose piercing, very pretty tiny clear stud .
The6 do take a while to heal , choose a reputable piercer and, why not ?

Personally I think they look absolutely awful but it’s your face.

My friend had one, it never stopped dribbling bits of saliva. Nose?

I personally don’t like them so would advise against it. Definitely don’t get a nose piercing that’s a ‘midlife’ crisis piercing. It’s what everyone decides to do when they’re reaching 40 and want a piercing

That's really fascinating, @Coconutter24 . I had no idea I was having a mid life crisis at seventeen when I got the first of my (eventually three) nose piercings.

What is interesting is that you didn’t read what I wrote. I said ‘reaching 40’ nothing about teens having them

I'm a teacher. I had my nose pierced at 40 and a tattoo on my arm (big one!) at 45. Who cares. Are you teaching kids to be themselves, the best version of themselves and not a clone of everyone else? Live it.

If you want it, do it! You only live once, it really doesn’t matter what other people feel about it. I’ve both my nipples pierced and I love them! EDIT to add I’m not flashing my nips everywhere mind, so sorry that’s not very helpful to your question OP. But I do have a few visible tattoos and a very corporate job. I really don’t think most people bat an eyelid anymore. I think being comfortable in who you are to the kids you teach can be nothing but a good thing!

I say do it! I’m a teacher too and thought I’d end up taking out my (many) facial piercings in order to ‘look the part’, this never happened and it has caused no issues. I also have very visible tattoos so it wouldn’t have done all that much!

Do what you want, if you regret it later you can just take it out.

Low labret piercings aren't great for your teeth, the back can cause gum erosion. How about a vertical labret instead?

Id worry about teeth with this piercing.

This whole "mid life crisis" thing is so ageist and such clichéd thinking.
I prefer to see it as becoming who you are, rather than constraining yourself with a lot of tedious rules about what you should and shouldn't do because you're over a certain age.

Thanks all. I think I‘ll reconsider. Already have some gum issues including receding gums on my lower teeth so it probably wouldn’t be a good idea!

A daith is a pretty piercing , takes a while to heal and you need to be careful with inner ear headphones.
They are supposed to help with migraines but who knows

How about one of those piercings at the base of the neck or over the sternum? I don’t know what they’re called or how they stay in but they’re rather cool.

I'll go for a septum piercing if I get another one

I'm getting a septum piercing for my 36th birthday in a few weeks. To go with my first nose piercing and multiple tattoos. If you want a piercing I say go for it but like pp said I'd be very wary of any around the mouth with the dental issues they can cause

How about a lip piercing?

I had a labret piercing for 10 years. I wouldn't advise a low labret - a straight bar in mine was awful on the teeth so I only ever wore a ring in it instead which you wouldn't have the option for if it was lower. Earlier this year I had it swapped to a vertical labret which I am so pleased with, might be an option for you?

I had a labret piercing for quite a few years and I loved it
No issues with dribbling saliva or anything.
But unfortunately it was damaging my lower front teeth over the years and the end I admitted defeat and reluctantly took it out for that reason

Someone up thread mentioned vertical labret, I have had one since I was about 17 and have had no problems because they don’t go near your teeth. In my opinion looks ‘prettier’ too.

Both my daughters chose lip piercings to avoid any teeth damage. One has a single piercing, the other a double.
I have belly button, 3 lobes, helix, rook, daith, conch, nostril and septum.
I’m nearly 48. Do what you like - it’s your body.

I had my septum done at 39. I’m 45 now & have both nostrils/septum/both eyebrows pierced. I’m quite heavily tattooed (including my fingers) I’m a qualified youth worker but i work a front facing shop job currently. My kids are 25,19 & 12,theyve never known me to look any different. I think its important people feel free to express their style & feel confident in their own skin-regardless of age. Perhaps look at other piercing options that might appeal to you that won’t interfere with your dental health.

DO IT! If you find you don't like it you can always just remove it .. better than always thinking what if?!

I'm mid 30s and within this last year I've decided to be spontaneous .. probably a midlife crisis .. probably undiagnosed ADHD released 🤣

gotten my nose pierced (tbh would have years ago but uniform policy!) and 8 tattoos .. prior to that I only had 1 that I got 10years ago!

within the last couple of years I've started adding colour to my hair as well and I'm starting to feel more alternative me.

Life is short do what makes you happy.

I did have nose and lip pierced briefly as a teen .. wouldn't be allowed lip at work though
