What perfume are we wearing in our 40s?

NowIsTheWinterOfOurDiscontent · Yesterday 19:18

Hello

I am loyal to Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin for summer.

For winter, I've used Coco Chanel but wonder if it's a bit too heavy/80s.

I've also used Coco Mademoiselle and Miss Dior and like them but wonder if they're a bit young for me now.

I HATE AND LOATHE CHANEL NO5!

I would like something clean and sophisticated rather than too young/old or sexy.

Any thoughts welcome! Thanks.

I love Bronze Goddess range by Estee Lauder. Also have the Blanc Soliel by Tom Ford. So summery.

Can anyone recommend any good autumn fragrances please?

These are also my favourite fragrances. Versace crystal noir is my autumn/winter version of these

Livingthedream1978 · Yesterday 22:50

I love the Gucci Flora (green one) and Angel has been my go to for years.

I also like the Jo Malone Bluebell for work.

Evening I wear Ed Hardy Original… I got caught in boots years ago when it was on offer and loved it. Inff don’t know anyone else that wears it though.

ProudBlackMomma · Yesterday 22:56

Currently have the following on rotation:

Loewe Solo Ella
Jo Malone Wood Salt and Bergamot
YSL Y
Bronze Goddess (strictly for summer)
Rare by Rare Beauty
Replica by the fireplace - the perfect fragrance for Autumn
Various Phlur spray
Azuree by Estée Lauder
Portrait of a Lady

DreamingOfGeneHunt · Yesterday 22:57

In the summer, Sun by Jill Sander or Cerruti 1881. Sometimes the Aldi (maybe it's Lidl) Peony Blush.

Autumn/Winter- Obsession which has been my favourite since I was 17, and Fracas dupe from Perfume Parlour.
I really really love Gucci A Midnight Stroll but it's so expensive I might afford it if I save up until next Christmas!

Pinkgin00 · Yesterday 23:00

I am not 40 yet but heading towards. I have worn the same perfume for years and i can't see this changing in my 40s. I have always loved Daisy by Marc Jacobs and Flowerbomb by Victor and Rolf . I also wear sol de janeiro (various scents) when I want something lighter.

RosesAndHellebores · Yesterday 23:07

I'm much older and wear:

Estee Modern Muse
Miss Dior (The new Intense one for winter)
Cartier La Panthere (winter evenings)

Try others but go back to them.

A lovely find this summer is Seasalt & Neroli from.M&S - if only it lasted longer.

I greatly miss Lancome Hypnose.

managingexpectations · Yesterday 23:23

43 I wear
Tom Ford Portofino Neroli
Penhaligon halfeti
Byredo Bal D’Afrique
Kayali boujee marshmallow
Creed Eladaria
Maison Crivelli Hibiscus Mahajad

I love perfume and there are others, I tend to wear a few on rotation then swap to some of the others.

ProudBlackMomma · Yesterday 23:39

Hypnôse hasn’t been discontinued 😊. I saw it on a Lancôme counter this week.

I haven't seen anyone mention Perfume Parlour yet, anyone who is looking for a discontinued perfume or just doesn't want to pay full price get yourself on their website.

@ATailWithAnIdiotAttached they do a dupe of Stella which has excellent reviews. I have used them before and the quality is fabulous, no I don't work for them and this is not an advert, but cost of living and all that.

LesTaupesMerveilleuses · Today 08:28

Absolutely adore the Commodity range (Juice | Milk | Velvet)!

BreadBarberShop · Today 08:40

Early 40s and have been wearing Very Irresistible by Givenchy for about 20 years. I also have a dupe version for days I'm not doing anything special.

Ringonrighthand · Today 08:48

I wear JM peony and suede blush or Prada Paradox but I have loads of little bits and pieces I am using up.

Top tip, when you are travelling book your duty free before you go and you get an extra 10% off. I got Diptyque Do Son for about £109 instead of £150 that way!

Love these too, pretty sure I’ve had them from beauty boxes or advent calendar’s as I’ve never bought them but they are all lovely!

ATailWithAnIdiotAttached · Today 08:50

@Hertinot

Thank you! I’ll chase that up. 🌸
The first bottle of the Divain 655 was very true to the Stella… the second, not so much 🫤

Advententhusiast · Today 08:52

Juliette has a Gun x Skins
Chanel nr 5
Chanel L'eau nr 5
Parfum de Marley Delina
Dedcool 01 Taunt
Byredo absolu (and normal) Bal D'afrique
BDK Rouge Smoking
Ex Nihilo Spikey Muse (love Jungle as well but dont have it)
Burberry Goddess
Rituals Intuitia
Goldfield and Banks Silky Woods

I still have things like Flowerbomb and La vie est Belle but Im kinda over it after 20 years of wearing it

Will buy Coco Mademoiselle again

Headinthecloudsfeetontheground · Today 08:59

I’m older than you but for decades have worn YSL Rive Gauche. Then, a few years ago when it was out of stock for months because they couldn’t get the aluminium for the container, I went over to Jo Malone 125. The ingredients are very similar.

Wipeywipey · Today 09:04

At the 90's revival in clothes continues I am wearing what I did in the 90's! JP Gaultier, J'adore, Issey Miyake - it's pure nostalgia.

Choux · Today 09:04

I’m no longer in my 40s but love a nice smell on my skin. I don’t mind cheap or expensive. I often buy small sample sets or smaller bottles so I can wear different scents on rotation depending on how I am feeling. It takes a long time to use up a 100ml bottle. My current faves are:

Summer
Island swim by Phlur (it’s a body spray so light)
l’Ortie Blanche by L’Occitane - very fresh and green
M and S perfumes - I layer the mandarin one with coconut. I also like the pink pepper one.
I have a Floral St Discovery set and like the Arizona Bloom, wonderland peony and Sunflower pop best
i have a Miller Harris sample set and like Tea Tonique, Peau Santal, Rose Silence and Scherzo the best

Winter
By the Fireplace by Maison Margiela. Lovely Smokey vanilla. If I want a lighter version eg for work I combine Vanilla Skin and Vanilla Smoke body mists from Phlur
Femininité du bois - Serge Lutens. I love this but haven’t bought it for a while. I must get a bottle this winter.

I cannot walk by a tester bottle of Issey Miyake without having a quick spray. Love it!

NowIsTheWinterOfOurDiscontent · Today 09:13

Thanks so much for all these lovely ideas! There's a lot here I have never heard of!

I thought I liked Diptique but tried it out again recently and it wasn't how I remembered.

I also like Aqua di Parma the Mediterranean Blue range with all the orange, fig etc but as citrus always does, it vanishes in about 2 mins which is no good for £287/100ml!

hardshoulderr · Today 09:14

Oh, you will need to abandon JM because it's bought out by Estee Lauder and go to Jo loves which is far better and actually made by Jo herself.
or the supercheap and brilliant Zara versions

Ooh my all time favourite is Vivienne Westwood Boudoir
discontinued and missed. Wonder if they do it
