Please help me do a make up reset in my 50s

I'm mid fifties and have never worn much makeup. Usually mascara and a bit of lip gloss and that's it. I have worn light foundation type stuff in the past but I am very wary about making myself look a different colour so I struggle to find a product I really like. I do have fairly good skin but I have a lot of redness at the moment. I'm looking for something to even out my skin tone and make me look tidied up but still natural.

I did a Trinny London appointment a couple of years ago and bought some products which have now run out. Their products were OK but I didn't love them and they are expensive. Where else could I go to find decent advice and good quality products, either online or in person? Thanks all.

I would book an appointment with a company you like at Boots or a department store. I used to go to department stores a lot and book in or wait until the make up lady was free and have been given a lot of useful info from the make up advisors.

I spend a lot of money on make up but I always come back to Boots No7 when it comes to foundation. It never lets me down. Go in and chat to one of their consultants and they’ll help you match your skin tone.

I’m 57, id recommend Victoria Beckham the drops, it is hugely expensive but honestly worth every penny, my skin looks luminous and flawless,

Yes i agree go into Boots or somewhere and . I use either L'Oréal tinted serum or I have a No7 luminous if im going out. Also If you are on instagram look up Kate Hughes she is make up artist but does "mid life " make up tips she is fab.

Fwiw I thought Trinny was just ok too I wasn't super impressed considering the tiny pots are expensive.

If you have Instagram (and I have a separate anonymous account just for following beauty/fitness/interiors, which really helps as it separates marketing from friendships) then have a look at Gucci Westman, Lisa Eldridge and artists like that who are in their fifties. I think space nk is more adapted to 40 and upwards compared to Sephora, so if you have one nearby, go and look at a few things. Lisa Eldridge skin drops (like superfine tinted moisturiser) sounds like it might be a good fit. Someone here might be able to predict when space nk might have a 20% off deal.

I follow someone hilarious called Julia amory who is a wealthy 40s ny socialite because she talks a lot about makeup and has great recommendations.

A lot of these are expensive recommendations, but if you eg watch a Julia amory video and she’s using a cream bronzer with a brush, you can definitely replicate at any big Superdrug which these days have insane choice. I like maybelline and Morphe.

I wear less make up in my late 50s than I ever did before! I use CC eborian cream and their anti redness cream too. I have had my eyebrows microbladed and I now wear Lola’s Lashes most days. I use blusher/bronzer and I still love a red lippy and eyeliner on a night out but day to day I use barely anything now.
i have invested in a new skin care regime and I have had polynucleotides and microneedling, and all of that has made my skin so much smoother and clearer, that makeup sits better than before.

I’d check out Nars tinted moisturiser, especially if you can find a staffed one where someone can help you with choosing the best colour.

If you’re near a city with a Selfridges you can book a make up lesson where they can use all the brands they stock, so you are not limited to one brand. Obviously not the cheapest but the cost of the lesson is redeemable against products.

Honestly, I’d keep it really simple rather than trying to build a whole new makeup routine. A good tinted moisturiser or skin tint, cream blush, mascara and a decent lip colour can make such a difference without looking cakey. And definitely get colour matched in person if redness is the main issue — it makes finding the right base so much easier.

Our local space nk has more mature staff, and they’re brilliant to talk to because they understand different skin concerns as you age, make up and fine (or not so fine 😂) lines. They do stock a lot of expensive brands, but a large store will have a good mix.

@Berthtraiding thanks. What you suggest is all I want, but it's the colour matching that's tricky. Think I will need to make a trip to a city with some big shops.

My face is a different colour in winter and summer. I find using mineral foundation over goid skin care works. People love do love trinny.

I'm in my 50's and like you hardly ever wear make up. I recently started using Laura Geller powder foundation. I never like the feeling of any cream foundations so the powder works for me if you just want light coverage. For redness I use a colour correcting moisturiser

I was about to ask if anyone uses Laura Geller powder foundation. I've been hovering over it but can't decide on shade...

Which colour correction moisturiser do you use?

Do you use a specific brand of mineral foundation? (showing ignorance as I don't really know what it is!)

Primer I’d recommend Aimee Connolly or max factor for redness, also spf le roc posay, rimmel perfect match is a dupe for ysl and I put a mac spray over it. I have red skin but you wouldn’t know it with make up! Best of luck it is all trial and error to see what works for you

Erborian CC creams are very good. I have rosacea and I use the anti-redness one

Definitely go and check things out in real life, rather than trying to buy online.

Agree about keeping it simple. I reckon a tinted moisturiser, an eyeshadow that you could also use as soft liner with a brush, a blush and a lipstick would be plenty. Mascara if you want it, though I’m increasingly finding I don’t.

Nars liquid blush is good.
And maybe check out one of the Clinique ‘Honey’ shades for very subtle lips.

I use one by L'oreal. "Magic CC" I got it in Boots.

Mineral foundation goes on like a lose powder with a brush. You can build it up and put on more on certain areas of your face. I find it easy to apply, nice light coverage without the tidal mark. I dont buy a particular brand, i think bare minerals is the go to, its very goid. Currently using tropic but find too sparkley, i wont rebuy.

I have found colour matching tricky, and have just bought Smooche, which is a light foundation that goes on white, when you smooth it on your skin, it somehow matches your skin tone. It does work on me, don't ask me how! It's quite light, when I want a bit more coverage I use 2 blobs instead of 1.
