The “perfect coat” for the sidelines this autumn??

Chocolateteabag · 21/08/2026 08:49

Help me find it?

Every year I stand on the side of a pitch in the rain & wind watching DC do “sport” and shiver/get wet/overheat/feel bedraggled

There is always a stylish mum looking amazing - where is the perfect coat?
i need it to be well below knee length with a decent hood that comes well over my head (blooming Schoeffel and their stingy hoods!)

I have looked at Didriksens, Ilse Jacobsen and Rains - anywhere else to try? I’m thinking Nordic/Scandi brands might be best for this?

(please don’t suggest Seasalt - I’m tall and their long coats aren’t long enough)

I rate regatta as they are waterproof and windproof. Next time you see the stylish lady just ask her. I always ask people if I like their clothes and I didn't know about Vinted until someone on a bus told me about it. This was before they had tv adverts .People do like giving info out I have found. It is also worth knowing about different companies sizing as I rely on Vinted/eBay and charity shops.

Do you want a waterproof or a duvet style one? I got a full length duvet style one from Tesco of all places for about £50 and it’s insanely warm. Not waterproof although fine in a shower.

I've got this one - not too heavy but so warm, its waterproof with a good hood. I sized down as its generous. I'm 5ft 6 and its mid calve on me.

I bought a beautiful denim Trench coat. It's thick enough to keep me warm, but light enough to not be a winter coat.

Northface.

And some Hunters.

How warm do you need to be OP? The coats you posted look cold! Puffer coats will keep you much warmer and will be waterproof (or showerproof). Didrikson or Varley are great for stylish options. Varley is £££ but you will wear for years to come.

I bought a lovely warm coat from M&S kids range and it was way cheaper than their adults prices. I am only 5ft 1 though 🤷🏻‍♀️

I haven't checked but usually a lot of expensive brands are on sale at Vined/eBay. I get my waterproof coats usually from eBay and have got great bargains. Equally from Vinted recently I got a bright pink trench coat and lots of people have complimented me.

Last year I bought a beautiful coat - very warm and totally waterproof, from the horsey department of our local garden centre. It’s a separate building so I don’t go in usually, but dh was looking at wellies. I can’t remember the brand off the top
of my head, and it’s in the loft at the moment, but I’d suggest checking horsey/outdoors sites for brands you may not have heard of.

I love didrikson and rate them for both style and functionality. Didrikson Nadia is a rain coat ie not insulated. If you’re on the sidelines I assume you need to be warm. I have an older version of Erika - different pockets. It’s rated extra warm so their top level of insulation. I’ve never been cold in it but it even standing on the sidelines in snow. It’s 101cm long which on me is to the knee.

I also have a coat rated warm, their middle layer of insulation. I use it for walking when the Erika would be too hot and bulky. It’s warm enough for most situations and is also knee length on me.

The fit is loose enough to allow layering up underneath and I just love them. I personally think coats longer than knee length are v unflattering.

I think some people look stylish in anything and others look bedraggled in the same clothes and conditions. I am in the latter camp, days sailing and my hair is a tangled mess etc my friend looks like she had just stepped out of a stylist.

Helly Hansen do insulated rain coats that might work for you.

Or get a larger raincoat and wear a hidden heated gilet underneath.

A North face one

I did 15 years with three sons and I can tell you that that's the answer

Violetparis · Today 10:03

Uniqlo is worth a look.

Goldensprat · Today 11:00

In my opinion, a non insulated but genuinely waterproof coat is the most sensible option. Don't try to make one layer do it all, insulation should come from the middle layers. For example a thick wool jumper on a cold day which you can then forego on a warm but wet day.

Thank you everyone - none of those quite cut it as they are either not long enough or not waterproof enough

I’m looking at maybe Didriksons Nadja
Or Stutterheim Mosebacke but £360!!

That looks good I think. I've had Didriksons coats in the past and they are very good at keeping the wind and rain out. Mine eventually started leaking after many years of almost daily use and unfortunately attempts to rewaterproof were not successful but it's definitely a great brand.

Don't be tempted to get a big puffy one because it's then just going to make you boiling and sweaty when it's raining but not cold. You can see the model is wearing a puffer jacket under the shell, which is the correct strategy.

You could get a shorter coat if you want and combine with shell trousers on particularly windy and rainy days. These are not usually stylish but they are very practical and make a huge difference to staying warm and dry.

Oh I love that Mosebakke one. Never heard of them before. Some gorgeous colours.

M&S do a really good football manager type one. It is literally like a duvet. I upgraded to a Uniqlo one. Not in shops yet. It's baking hot so great for sidelines but not moving about!
