The “perfect coat” for the sidelines this autumn??

Every year I stand on the side of a pitch in the rain & wind watching DC do “sport” and shiver/get wet/overheat/feel bedraggled

There is always a stylish mum looking amazing - where is the perfect coat?
i need it to be well below knee length with a decent hood that comes well over my head (blooming Schoeffel and their stingy hoods!)

I have looked at Didriksens, Ilse Jacobsen and Rains - anywhere else to try? I’m thinking Nordic/Scandi brands might be best for this?

(please don’t suggest Seasalt - I’m tall and their long coats aren’t long enough)

What about a long ski jacket?

Yep - I am up north - so need to layer under a proper waterproof layer - but be able to take off a layer on the random warmer day!

I have proper walking/running waterproofs but sideline stuff needs to be warmer as we are just standing there

now heated gilet may be the answer!

and yes I’m now stalking Vinted with some options!

This. Very warm, seems to only have two colours available at the moment, but in season comes in many more. I have it in arctic navy and it is the warmest and most practical coat I have ever owned. True to size as well.

Just realised you are tall. I’m 5’6 so not really short or tall all but it is also the longest coat I have ever worn.

I think you should be looking more at your mid and base layers if you already have good shell layers. Wool is wonderful but puffa style or fleece mid layers can also work great.

I know you said not seasalt but the Janelle comes in a tall length and it’s longer. I have this for walking my dog, it’s wind & waterproof and lightweight but toasty warm. It’s probably more function than fashion -I also have a lovely warm puffa style from M&S from last year as I wanted something more fashionable -it’s what they call storm proof. I don’t think they have them in stock yet. It’s long on me-mid calf and I’m 5’5. I don’t rate fashion shops “waterproof” as they don’t really have taped seam ie at shoulders and if you’re standing on sidelines in rain it seeps through. I live in Scotland btw so have plenty cold and wet weather.
Friend had a very warm North Face coat for playground duty and swore by it.

I have a couple of Uniqlo gilets to wear under my coats. Layering is easier than 1 big multipurpose coat... I am down south but travel a lot so need a big variety of outerwear (that's my excuse 😆)

You won't like it - but the answer to all of your weather woes (rain / wind / cold) on the sidelines - is a Dry Robe (if needed a merino thermal underneath). You'd never go back to another. Stylish nope. But you won't care.

I have been on the hunt for something too and yesterday ordered a cobe from wild and free. Its a cross between a dry robe and a coat I'm hoping it will do the job

I have this Rains coat and it’s still great 4 years later - fully waterproof and warm.

I also have the full range of Heattech by Uniqlo, from socks and tops, to jeans for when it’s Baltic.

I have a dog & live in Cornwall. I also have a son & have stood on the side of a pitch in sideways rain. This is the best coat ever! 😁

I spent ages trying to find a super warm, waterproof and stylish coat and decided it was impossible.
Mine is nicely shaped (draws in at the waist) very warm, nice and long but shower proof rather than waterproof.
I justice a big golf umbrellas if it tips it down. I spend a ridiculous amount of time stood in a sideline and it really did the trick last year.

I have a Targetdry riding coat which is probably deeply uncool but it does an amazing job of keeping the wet and wind out at a decent price. It's like a waxed jacket but without the tendancy to smell!

If it's really cold I have a bum-length puffy gilet that goes underneath it.

Just be a Dryrobe wanker like many of the rest of us at the side of the rugby pitch. The horsey ones wear Equidry, which is basically the same thing.

I have an Ilse Jacobsen mid calf length for windy train platforms next to a harbour and pitch sidelines - water and windproof, good hood, and I can layer up underneath.

DH has a Didriksens for pitch sidelines which he loves. And he had a Helly Hansen one which came to knees before that.

We can recommend all 3. (He’s less concerned about his head as he normally wears a peaked cap as well, and sometimes a woolly one on top).

Got a brilliant one from decathlon last year, its so warm, after 2 hours at freezing footy, i'm still well insulated!!

The Regatta Eloria. 8 of us mums on the sidelines of DD’s football team had one by the end of last season. I’ve just looked and they only seem to do it in two colours when last year & they year before they had at least half a dozen so you might want to wait a bit

Fleece lined leggings (Primark)
Thick joggers
Top half layers I vary more often
Hat
Ski gloves
Scarf

Sweaty Betty Nimbus is amazing but very expensive.
M&S good move do very good coats.

Go for thinnish and waterproof and big enough to fit a gilet or long sleeved equivalent under on the coldest days. Layers - cover all bases!
