The “perfect coat” for the sidelines this autumn??

Every year I stand on the side of a pitch in the rain & wind watching DC do “sport” and shiver/get wet/overheat/feel bedraggled

There is always a stylish mum looking amazing - where is the perfect coat?
i need it to be well below knee length with a decent hood that comes well over my head (blooming Schoeffel and their stingy hoods!)

I have looked at Didriksens, Ilse Jacobsen and Rains - anywhere else to try? I’m thinking Nordic/Scandi brands might be best for this?

(please don’t suggest Seasalt - I’m tall and their long coats aren’t long enough)

Honestly in driving rain I would sit in my car. It’s enough to have driven him there and back.

Depends on your budget! But if you can find a Norrona one on sale or on Vinted ... these are the best for bad weather IMHO!

I agree with this. A long waterproof coat with a lightweight puffa, real wool jumper, underlayers. I also have some showerproof walking leggings from decathlon which help in driving rain. I think mountain warehouse do similar.

I keep getting this advertised to me. My sideline days are over, but this does look properly waterproof and easy to layer under.

Didrikson are the best. They are just so waterproof wind proof and cold proof even not the thickest versions

I got a great waterproof coat from M&S last year.
It’s not warm but I can layer up underneath.
I see M&S have a good selection this year too, including some from Jaeger, I just checked online.
There’s one in a gorgeous taupe colour but it’s probably not practical for standing on the side of a muddy pitch.
I don’t see the point of a waterproof coat that is short in length, particularly when we can get sleeting rain @Hellohelgabut agree with you that they are unflattering.

I also don't understand the point of a short raincoat - there are a load in the shops at the moment for the current season that are cropped at the waist!? Madness (and pointless). Like this one from Uniqlo - massive hood but won't even keep your bum dry!

I have a black Seasalt Janelle for the touchline (DH calls it my football manager coat) but knee-high wellies make sure I'm fully covered - I find if a coat is any longer than just below the knee it makes it very hard to walk. Looking at Seasalt, it looks like they now have Tall sizing which might help you OP?

I live in Scotland and spend far to much time watching kids play sports and I'm naturally cold. This is a game changer, I have been known to say I'm getting a bit warm when wearing it. I bought mine new with tags of vinted a couple of years ago.

Ha! This thread is giving me flashbacks to the hours I used to spend watching DS1&2 playing mini, then junior rugby. Nothing short of a hurricane would stop the matches 😆. I agree a waterproof coat and layers is the way ahead, and also a beanie hat or something that will go under a hood. Gloves are also essential. I found ski gloves worked well as they are waterproof. I have a NorthFace coat that has a detachable fleece lining and the hood has a sort of peak on it so it shelters your face properly iyswim

Eta I also found that waterproof trousers were a godsend. Jeans are a no no as they are freezing and soak through easily. Also walking boots much better than wellies so your feet are warm. I stopped worrying about being coordinated and just wanted to be warm and dry. You can strip
off to a fashionable look when back in the clubhouse 😆😆

Sport pursuit often have bargains. I got a long warm Didrikksen jacket to wear in Iceland. Lots of choice.

Try this

Sweaty Betty Nimbus (wait for Black Friday for offers if you can) with a Uniqlo compact gillet for extra cold days. Good thermal long sleeve top and leggings.

Warm hat that covers ears completely and a neck warmer/snood. A waterproof cap for heavy rain.

Decent gloves/mittens and hand warmers.

Properly insulated and waterproof boots. Long thermal socks.

Hot water bottle (stick it inside the compact gillet) and an insulated cup with a hot drink.

I have a Holland cooper all in one for this purpose. I keep getting compliments every time I wear it and it is very cosy and warm

Regatta have a sale on at the moment so I’ve been buying loads of bits and pieces from them.

I don’t need a new coat but they had a lovely coat that would be perfect for your needs

I got this for dog walking but where it had come into it's own is watching my DD play Rugby in vertical Rain.

It's supposed to be a mix of a coat and dry robe what I love is the massive hood can't be dealing with some good they are tiny and pockets lots of pockets. The length is good as well I always think the longer the better for warmth and protection against rain.

Look, I’m not sure if this is necessarily the worlds most stylish coat, but it’s waterproof, has a huge hood and is sooooo warm as it’s 80-20 down-feathers. I owned it in black and have worn for 2 winters but have lost a lot of weight so have just reordered in a size small in burgundy which is currently on sale for just £92. @Susanfromfinanceit says that coat is water resistant. Have you found it to be waterproof ?
One of my dds has a LandsEnd coat for a good few years and it has been fantastic - waterproof and warm - a real workhorse of a coat but definitely not stylish. I think it’s a Squall.
A Dryrobe or similar ticks all boxes too (except the Style one), great suggestion @RobinEllacotStrike

@Cannesdo yup i have stayed bone dry even in storms but tbh I use it mostly commuting in London. This does involve a lot of standing at bus stops though and trudging through streets. Not sure how it would hold up if outside for 2 plus hours in torrential rain.
