Trainers with dress

hello, I'm going to a 50th in a couple of weeks. it's a day thing and will involve walking between venues in a city, but does end up in a nice restaurant. I have this dress and would like to wear it with trainers. I was thinking of getting some sneakerinas. any thoughts on trainers to go with it? I have lots of trainers but they're all very bold colours!

espadrilles came to mind, they are (mostly) smart and comfy and adaptable to different scenarios. Will leave trainers for somebody else to answer.

I wouldn't wear trainers with that dress. I agree with the previous poster that espadrilles would look great.

I think trainers would look weird with that dress. Not to mention the whole 'nice dress and trainers' look is very 2019. You may as well chuck a denim jacket over it!

Surely just a nice pair of sandals (flat or slight wedge/block heel) would be perfectly comfortable? Or even ballet shoes? You might be walking a bit between venues but surely not trekking miles.

Sneakerinas in particular are absolutely hideous, and I notice seem to have already disappeared from most shops.

Onitsuka tiger sneakerinas or All Birds ballet flats or Mary Janes.

Not block heel sandals.

Never found any proper shoes as comfortable/good for your feet as trainers-there's a reason most people wear them to work now, even if the white trainers with dress look started a while back.
Fitflop do have pairs that look good and are comfortable.

How about some tan leather sandals, like Fitflop or Timberland do, that are clearly designed to be comfortable for walking distances, without looking like walking sandals or cut-away trainers.

Isn't brightly coloured trainers with dresses a thing now? Not white ones any more. If you want to wear trainers, go for a slim, retro style trainer in a contrasting colour. Nothing chunky. Definitely not sneakerinas, too faddy.

Wear what you feel comfortable in, perhaps not a chunky trainer but I’d pick those over shoes that are uncomfortable. Most of us don’t change our clothes with fads.

I do smile reading comments about a dress, trainers and a denim jacket. Who cares that it was apparently a thing in 2019? That's as good as last week in my wardrobe!

Only wear white tennis shoes and draped white cardigan/jumper if you want to look like Kate Middleton imo. I don’t think ballet shoes would look great either. Coloured trainers would be fine or sneakerinas. I like the look of the Puma ones.

thanks everyone for the suggestions! I should have said that I hate showing my toes, and I have bunions so mostly sandals are out of the question. I like these two attached. would either work? I love the Onitsuka tiger sneakerinas as well but can't really justify the price at the moment!

Those stripey ones are lovely, but I'd definitely wear trainers with the dress and not care if I look '2019!

I agree with the comment above; everyone says to wear what you want until it comes to wearing a dress and trainers, then it’s NO! You’ll look like a (stage whisper) middle aged woman!

well I am a middle aged woman, so I'm fine with that 😆 I've actually now ordered both pairs of shoes as like them both and they're on sale. will see which looks best when they get here 🙂

This is style and beauty though, people are allowed to like clothes and fashion without being looked down on.

Would you go on to a thread about football and say 'I do smile reading comments about a game' or one about a book and say 'l do smile when people have an opinion about literature'?

Style and beauty doesn’t have to mean cutting edge fashion though - and I still see loads of denim jackets of various styles and colours being worn by people of all ages and genders, not simply middle aged women. Although apparently, according to many on here, a middle aged woman is the worst thing one could possibly look like. Denim jackets are just very useful in terms of weight and go with lots of things. I still like them.

nobody has said all denim jackets are out of date though? Just that a very specific combination of items and cuts/styles is now dated. Which is nothing to do with looking old - OP hadn't even mentioned her age at the point the outfit was apparently being criticised for being middle aged, so there's some internalised ageism going on there!

Usually if people bother posting on s&b it's because they want opinions of what to wear so they fit in with the general aesthetic and other attendees of the event they are going to. Otherwise if they were 'I wear what I want and fuck what anyone else thinks' types why bother posting?

In my opinion, the stripy/pink shoes would look great with the dress and would be a suitable outfit for a wedding, the silver sneakerinas would....not. OP is fully entitled to not give a shiny shit what I think, but seeing as she specifically posted asking for opinions I'm entitled to give it! It's not like I was walking past her house and shouted 'I hate your fugly shoes' through the window at her.

I haven’t said that anybody isn’t allowed to give opinions. I was just commenting on denim jackets and on the opinion that some people seem to have about them that they are always naff now.

Since the dress is a perfectly ordinary and accessible one and not cutting edge in itself, I think the OP could pair it with a variety of things and look and feel absolutely fine.

The dress looks black and beige/ off white stripe - bright white trainers will totally detract attention to them and not the dress.

I don't agree that s&b is about finding out how to fit in with what other people will be wearing at all. It can be about finding something that fits with the wearer's own style that could be very different from what everyone else wears. Something can be stylish without being remotely what other people wear.

Your bold colour trainers could be ok I think.
