Trainers with dress

hello, I'm going to a 50th in a couple of weeks. it's a day thing and will involve walking between venues in a city, but does end up in a nice restaurant. I have this dress and would like to wear it with trainers. I was thinking of getting some sneakerinas. any thoughts on trainers to go with it? I have lots of trainers but they're all very bold colours!

I've bever understood why people want to ruin a lovely dess by wearing trainers with it. Might be comfortable but just doesn't look good.

My point is that people are allowed to be interested in fashion without being made to feel foolish.

I absolutely love clothes and am interested in fashion though I don’t generally follow it particularly. But, at the end of the day, it really is true that nobody else really cares about our choices and that some people, myself included, probably give our decisions more headspace than anyone else will ever care about. The ‘Wear what you want as nobody cares’ comments are probably just an acceptance that most people are so hung up on themselves that they’re not really thinking about what others have chosen unless they happen to notice something really awful or that really aligns to their own tastes.

Anyway, OP - have a nice time in whatever you choose and I think trainers will be fine!

I'm middle aged/old and clueless and there's something I would love opinions on from you fashionistas.
If you have a body shape that's suits a maxi dress, trainers and a denim jacket and you feel good in is it better to wear that and look dated to some or to wear something deemed as fashionable that doesn't actually suit your body shape and is uncomfortable just to try to look on trend.
I always tend to sway back to the dress and trainer style as I think it suits me and makes me feel more confident. Im not as likely to be trying to shrink into a corner pulling at my clothes and feeling ridiculous as I would be in some of the more current styles I have tried.

I think trainers look awful with dresses. Sneakarinas could work though. Some of them are very cute.

I didn’t take that from her post - she was smiling that often people are supportive of ‘wear what suits you’ until certain combinations are presented. Quite a specific thing, not just laughing at the idea of people caring about style.

How far do you have to walk? I would just wear a decent pair if shoes. If the shoes are too uncomfortable to walk in, I wouldn’t buy them.

I think what people often forget on here is that 'fashion' is so much more varied than it would have been in the days when there were perhaps just two collections launched each season by a very few fashion houses. I see lots of young women in what essentially look like baby grows, for example, which I assume is 'fashion' but it's a different 'fashion' from the 'fashion' that decided skinny jeans were 'out' and wide leg are 'in' or that then decided barrel jeans were the ones to wear or that flowery dresses and denim jackers are naff but striped dresses are okay etc. In fact, there are so many different providers of clothes and different sub-groups etc that I don't think it's even necessarily possible to define any specific code of 'fashion' at all now - who defines the codes now? That's why I really wish we could lose the idea of fashion at all and just think style instead. And style can't be defined either, of course, but then it's about opinions of what works for us or others, rather than ever-changing rules, which I'm much more comfortable with.
