Stripey dress as a basic.

I have lots of long floating dresses with patterns, and I want it to move away to something a bit more basic. Maybe a bit more figure hugging.

Are horizontal stripes regarded tr3ndy these days.

I just wanted a plain basic dress, and this one is fairly cheap.

The fabric is v substantial thick heavt jersey & it doesn't sag or grow loose as you wear it

Actually, there have been studies since then that have "debunked" that! It depends on the thickness of stripes, the light to dark ratio, the cut of clothing & other factors.

That dress is thin of stripe & on the darker side - both more slimming, theoretically.

I do like the dress - I like Jigsaw products & it's really well-reduced. However, the thing I personally find a bit offputting is the asymmetrical neckline. It's not one-shouldered, which is a very deliberate style - it has instead been cut on a very slight diagonal to look as if it's casually falling off one shoulder ... but instead I think it looks a bit contrived! It is a style that is "in" right now though - whereas all the other striped jersey maxi dresses are much plainer/more basic in style. Maybe you could pull it down a bit more to make it look properly off one shoulder?

Yeah, I wasn't sold on the neck line either.And I think it would annoy me falling off the shoulder. So I'll think I'll look for an equivalent one with normal shoulders

I agree. The asymmetric shoulder line doesn't make a basic dress. You need a t shirtsdress.

I really like it op and have ordered it. Only fly in the ointment for me is the neckline because of visible bra straps but It’s a nice dress and I’ll see what it’s like when it’s on.

There's a one shoulder version for the same price that looks less sloppy, I really like it but not sure if that would count as an everyday 'basic'

I think it just depends on the length you prefer to wear, in a particular style? I am also tall, & Seasalt skirts & dresses are always just that bit too short for my own liking. It's a nice dress, but IMO would look more contemporary if it was several inches longer.

I've never bought anything from White Stuff, so have no idea what their clothes are like. But for a striped T-shirt dress with a slight twist to it, this is quite nice?

Only a size 4 left, but it might be traceable in store. This is what I'd consider a basic everyday striped T-shirt dress - obviously lots of others did at that sale price too, hence it being almost totally sold out!

Funnily enough I was in town earlier this afternoon and walked past a jigsaw, remembered I’d ordered the dress in the op and thought I’d go and see if it was there - they only had the one shoulder version and panicked thinking that I’d ordered that by mistake! I avoid anything that’s full shoulders out but it felt like a nice weighty dress and I’m looking forward to my delivery.

They're such a staple item. I've had striped t shirt dresses since the 90s and they can look good on nearly everyone and go anywhere in the daytime from beach to store to lunch out or a casual night. My eldest has my long 90s Gap one, I habe a knee length one and a navy and white long one.

I agree that the shoulder falling off would get annoying.

Enabled by this post, I bought the Jigsaw dress in both navy stripe and plain khaki. I’m a 12 and the medium is perfect.

OMG they are FABULOUS. The shoulder / neckline is cut to sit off the shoulder so it isn’t ‘falling down’ as such - it just sits at that level. As PP said it is lovely thick jersey which helps the shoulder ‘sit still’. You don’t have to keep fiddling with either side.

One note - they are LONG. I am 5’9-10 and they sit just above my ankle. This is a bonus for me :)

I also love that they don’t have a side slit, which I dislike on a dress as it puts it into holiday mode for me; just a bit toooo casual.

Before the Jigsaw dresses the last two things I got were from eBay. One great, the other straight in the charity bag.

Yeah, that too.I've bought one dress from vinted, and it went straight in the bin.I couldn't even be bothered to claim a refund for the state it was in.

Anyway, the navy stripey dress I wanted has sold out in my size.Probably because I alerted you guys to it 🤣🤣🤣

Well, you can buy new clothing that isn't "fast fashion".

I rarely do though. For something special that I'll wear forever, yes. The rest of the time it's eBay (which I've been using since 2004!), Vinted, sometimes Etsy or other second-hand platforms. Also charity shops & vintage shops & markets - but more so for jewellery, bags, sunglasses etc that don't depend on me being a size 10 anymore!!

Originally it was to shop for vintage.

Then I started to set up searches for things that had sold out/expensive items that I didn't want to spend full price on.

Then sustainability became a large part of the reasoning.

And now it's also because I'm no longer quite well-to-do, & am instead a poor freelancer who can't afford to buy new!

I genuinely don't feel constrained by that - the thrill of the chase has always been a real pleasure & I still find it so much fun. And I do feel good that it's better for the environment.

I tried that one on in Jigsaw. It looks dreadful on, like a sack. And I love a stripey dress and I'm a size ten. The off the shoulder thing drove me demented in the few mins I was wearing it in the dressing room.

We don't have a proper jigsaw shop, it's a pop up shop and I hadn't realised this wasn't a 'second' or outlet item it was so bad!

I do both, use vinted and buy new. Although the reason clothes end up on vinted is because someone has bought them new from a shop in the first place of course!
I buy and sell on vinted in fits and starts but have only had success on there, no duds. I’m quite specific about what I’m searching for though, I don’t usually open it for a browse.

Op why did you procrastinate after sharing the link?! Maybe get yourself on vinted in a few months, you’ll probably find someone selling it in your size!
ETA I just checked and it’s still available in my size and now I don’t feel guilty that I was responsible 😂
