Stripey dress as a basic.

I have lots of long floating dresses with patterns, and I want it to move away to something a bit more basic. Maybe a bit more figure hugging.

Are horizontal stripes regarded tr3ndy these days.

I just wanted a plain basic dress, and this one is fairly cheap.

That looks a pretty good buy to me - not basic at all. And horizontal stripes are a perennial look - though I gather polka dots are the thing this summer.

Thanks.I've also got an extra fifteen percent off code from an email they sent me so I'll get it for less than £25.

I have seen a lot of polka dot dresses but not sure I like the styles for me.I'll have a look though.

Why bother, if you’re not keen on polka dots? 😄

I’m completely swerving them.

Because I saw my colleague wearing them and they look really nice.So I wondered if I could find something that looked nice on me.

Also, it's not that I'm not keen on polka. Dots, it was more the style of dresses.

I like that, great discount too. I got a corker of one last year similar for a £5 in Tesco - love a bit of F&F!

patooties · 03/08/2026 12:24

I have this exact dress and wear it the time.

Not a fan of the dots. To me they seem twee - even when on a grown up style dresses

It's a nice dress and one that will get a lot of wear, I bought this recently and it's become my go to

Stripy dresses are brilliant. I have a knee length black one and a midi navy one. They're especially good for things like weekends away and boiling hot days at my work like today.

MyPlumHelper · 03/08/2026 13:59

Thanks everybody was quite open to any constructive feedback, but it would appear that many people like it. Will get that one purchased.

I'm just shy of 5'10 so it's a nice length for me!

Pearlstillsinging · 03/08/2026 15:29

Horizontal stripes visually add weight, which is fine if you are size 8, not so good if you are size 18, when vertical stripes would be better. The Seasalt dress has slightly diagonal stripes.

Edited

That myth was debunked ages ago. Horizontal stripes dont add weight. They actually make you look taller and thinner.

Vertical stripes on the other hand make you look wider.

That’s bloody lovely!
What a great, quietly elegant style, in cotton, and cheap!
Annoyed it’s sold out in my size!

Who debunked the myth? I’ve believed it all my life! 😆

WhatToWearMilan · 03/08/2026 16:46

I was considering the other colourway too

Oh is that true? I'm a size 18 and have always believed that about horizontal stripes and I don't like vertical stripes at all.

That stripey dress is gorgeous op!!

SparkyBlue · 03/08/2026 18:49

OP that’s gorgeous. Apart from the length (I know I’ll need to shorten it) what way do jigsaw fit? I’m a 10/12 normally.

OneNewEagle · 03/08/2026 20:03

I think the stripes depends on width of the said stripes. I’m an 18 I wear stripey tops nowadays, some look nice some make me look a bit bigger.

that dress is really nice, i wish I could wear something like that.

I actually am tall and slim, and I had to donate a very similar dress (from Next) because it looked bloody awful on me.

I thought it looked fabulous in the mirror when trying it on, then I saw a photo of myself in it...

It probably wasn't the stripes TBH, more the jersey fabric. Not only was it unflattering, it just looked off. Clingy and sloppy.

I think the style and pattern will look great in a dress that has more weight and structure to it, or in a stiffer fabric.
