Pixie haircut for over 50s?

I am feeling the need for a change and am considering a micro pixie cut.

I'm 52, 5'3" about a size 18, rarely wear makeup. I also look my age- puffy eyes, wrinkles etc. I'm not vain so objectively I would say I was quite plain,not ugly just very ordinary looking,oval face nice eye colour no stand out features.

Do these cuts only look good on models? I had really short har about 25 years ago- I liked it but my now DH didn't really. I'll post a couple of pictures of the style I like that i found on pinterest. . Have been asking AI and quite like the mock up it did but think I need a real life opinion. I could post the AI image as well but don't really want to out myself!

Forgot to say my hair is fine and very straight. My natural colour is mousey with grey hairs bit it's highlighted blonde at the moment

I am 60, overweight and love my pixie cut (for the last 35 years). For the last 10 years I’ve been bleached blonde and that has really helped in giving my fine hair texture.

I don't think anyone can really say unless they've seen you.

Personally I would say that a pixie cut is very unforgiving. I wouldn't since Im in my 50s and don't have the tiny features/face shape for it.

I had a variety of very short hair cuts all my adult life. Some funky, some more subdued. However, when I hit my mid fifties I realised people only saw an old lady hair cut, even when it was pink! I’ve actually grown my hair a bit longer, to look younger, even though I don’t think it suits me as well.
The most important thing is you own it and like it.

The other thing to remember about a pixie cut is that it needs to be maintained very frequently to keep it looking good.
Can you commit to and afford a trim every six weeks?

You might not be comfortable with it but ChatGPT can put that style on you so you can see for yourself how it would look; also, that picture is AI. There are but few women who look like that.

I've had a pixie cut like the pic on the left for over 30 years. I'm now 70. I love it, it's so easy to keep.

Obviously I don't look like the 25 year old model and neither will you! But the haircut looks fine.

I have my hair cut every 5 weeks. As PP said you have to be prepared to have frequent cuts.

I was overweight for most of my life and sported either long hair or a chin length bob with fringe. Then I lost all the weight and at the grand age of 48 got a short back and sides. People who have never met me with longer hair cannot imagine me with a different haircut.

Truthfully, I don't think the short hair would have suited me with a round face, but it is the most freeing haircut I've ever had, I go to the local turkish barber once a month, it costs £15 and it is done in 10 minutes. I absolutely love it. In terms of hairstyle, think Naga Munchetty - i.e. short all over the top and worn flat. To the barber the instructions are: no. 2 back and sides, 1'' over the top with scissors 😂
I will never go long again with hair.

I'm in my sixties and had a pixie cut during lockdown. I absolutely loved it especially how I could get lots of different looks with products. It was fun, easy to look after but ultimately, I don't think it really suited me.

That said I have a couple of friends my age who have them and they look fabulous - really chic.

Give it a go. It'll be a fun experiment and if it doesn't work you can just grow it.

I have the same hair type as you and loathe some aspects of having long hair (the wind blowing it into my face & 4hr hairdresser appts to name two). But I’ve stayed away from short hair as I think it will age me. I plan to hang onto my hair as long as possible! As I age it won’t grow as long and gradually get thinner - so it will naturally get shorter and shorter. The lure if a pixie is tempting for the easier maintenance, but I will resist!

Be careful that AI isn't enhancing your features in a way that could never be achieved with the cut. I asked it to show my photo with a fringe and layers and it looked incredible, I asked it to show it with my actual hair (as it had also lengthened it) and it looked thinner and lanker and disappointing

I had pixie cuts in my teens and 20s and had to get it cut every 5 or 6 weeks to keep it looking good. It suited me then as my cheekbones and jawline were sharp. Now in my 60s I wear my hair layered and long. It is more forgiving and versatile. Costs a lot less at the hairdresser too.

I’ve had a pixie cut for years, I’m 58 and petite but definitely look my age! I just had it trimmed today, I get it done every six weeks. I love it, it’s so easy to deal with every day. I also have some copper lights through the top, I only get that done a couple of times a year though.

My aunt (size 18ish, under 5 foot, in her 70s) got one of these and she looks epic! It really suits her. I say go for it.

I’m in my 60’s with a very short purple coloured pixie haircut but luckily, I have a slim face and good cheekbones.

If you have a round or jowly face, it won’t necessarily be as flattering and you might be better with longer shaggy layers.

I could have written this post (minus the bit about pink!) and felt that even though the shorter cut really suited me, I felt older and invisible. Having longer hair definitely added something to my appearance, whereas I only felt I really rocked short hair if my makeup and clothes were perfect (which doesn't happen very often)!

I have longer hair that I wear in a variety of styles off my face, so it’s longer hair but ‘up’ so it suits my face like short hair. It’s a faff but I think I look younger. I love a pixie cut though, I think they really look good on older women.

I have my hair like the pictyure on the right only with the sides and back shorter! I get it clippered. I get it cut every 3 weeks as I like it short. Sometimes I keep the front and top flattish and other times I have it more spiky.

I love it. It's easy to wash in the shower every morning and most days I let it dry naturally which does take that long.

I think it suits me and I also like that my earrings can be seen easily as I like unusual ones!

I've had short hair most of my adult life but about three years ago (early 50s) decided to grow it longer for a change. My hair's very thick and I'd forgotten what an absolute pain in the arse it was to dry when it's long. I found that most of the time I just put it in a pony tail and it looked a bit shit.

Last year I was diagnosed with cancer and lost my hair due to chemo. In some ways I've actually really enjoyed being bald. It makes showering very quick. It's just starting to grow back and I'm aiming for a pixie by the end of the year. Someone I haven't seen for a while told me recently that my current very short bristles were chic and suited me (she thought it was a cut I'd chosen).

I can't see me growing it again. My brief foray into longer hair reminded me why I usually don't bother. Yes, I'll need to get it cut more often but overall think that it will be less hassle then spending loads of time drying it and faffing around with it.

I really like pixie cuts and very short bobs. They're definitely the haircuts that catch my eye on other women regardless of their age.

I’m sure you’ve been warned but my post chemo hair was curly. I looked like a sheep for about 6 months, it was nice and soft though.

It looks okay on you on the photos. I think that pixie cuts in general can be very unforgiving unless you have a small face and elfin features. Most people need a bit more softness.
