Is expensive shampoo worth it? Recommendations?

My hair is a bit dry as I age, so I'm wondering if investing in a better shampoo and conditioner would be worth it, rather than the cheaper brands. Can anyone advise please, and recommend a good brand?

I’m a bit of a shampoo connoisseur - I’ve tried everything. I don’t think they are worth it actually in my experience

I definitely notice a difference when I use more expensive shampoo.

I used Wella’s hair quiz to suggest a suitable shampoo for me, and ordered it from ‘ Look Fantastic’ to take advantages of discount offers. I admit, the conditioner is quite expensive so I used a cheaper conditioner.

The Aussie conditioner is fabulous and not pricey.

Klorane peony shampoo is the only thing that has ever got rid of my dandruff and irritated scalp. Been using it for 12 years and it’s still working for me. I’m told their other various shampoos are good for different types or hair/problems.

I switched to pureology after an embarrassing trip to the hairdressers where he could barely comb my hair out (I was using budget stuff at the time)
it’s pricey but you only need half the amount as it’s concentrated. Smells amazing and my hair is 100x better. There’s no going back for me now.

I don’t think expensive is necessarily better, but your hair will tend to respond better to some shampoos than others so worth trying a few until you find one you like. I like L’Oréal Elvive extraordinary oil. I have extensions, which tend to get dry as they don’t produce their own oil, and I find this keeps them looking nice for longer.

I've found it's all a bit random. Once I used Dove hand-wash on my hair as I was desperate, and it's never looked or felt so good! The Faith in Nature range is lovely, as is OGX.

I got a gift set of Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub and the Regenerating Mask. I am not a big beauty product spender but that combo is the only thing that has ever made my hair feel as nice as when I come out the hairdresser. I barely even need to brush it the next morning and people have often asked me whether I've had my hair done when I use it.

It's only for use once a week and I genuinely look forward to using it - I used birthday money to get another lot of it. The smaller gift set size had lasted me for over six months so it's actually not too bad for cost per use.

If they ever discontinue them I'm going to have to fill the cellar.

I find I have to keep changing my shampoo every 3 or 4 months. It’s like my hair gets used to it and it doesn’t work as well! I’ve had this with all price ranges.

Agree about Pureology shampoo and conditioner, makes my hair feel and look so much better. I order the 1 litre bottles online that come with a dispenser pump so you only use the small amount needed. 3 of us using and lasts for many months

Tres semme does the best for me, with herbal essence tube conditioner, an oil (pennys argan!) and heat defence spray. Redken, kerastese, joici all did nothing! Aussi and L’Oréal also doid nothing. Argan oil in three times extra a week (just to the ends of dry hair. I’ve found some keratin shampoo and conditioners from tx max good but not amazing. My friend swear by cantu or Shea moisture

Olaplex has done wonders for my dry frizzy hair. Daughter also loves it. She has thicky wavy hair and it frizzes easily.

Innersense, great for my curls which can be dry and frizzy without the right care.

Pureology Sheer Hydrate shampoo and conditioner are excellent for dry hair. Mine is coloured and, now I’m menopausal, has gone dry instead of oily. The Pureology has been a bit of a life saver tbh. I use the one for coloured, fine, dry hair.

As other posters have said, it's not always that more expensive shampoos are better but sometimes you need to try a few to see what works best for you.

I'm currently enjoying Hairification shampoo, bond repair treatment and conditioner. For me, I tend to think conditioner is most important. I also use a spray leave in conditioner and an oil but that suits my hair. I would imagine that would be too much for others.

I find that the more expensive shampoos really work on my hair for a while, and then my hair seems to get used to them and they become less effective. I now do a rotation and use products like Good Hair Day, Olaplex and Champo. I intersperse them with clarifying shampoos. Seems a lot of effort and I'm not sure the end result makes me look much better but hey ho, at least I'm trying. I also use hair oils and hair masks, plus heat resistant sprays such as hair Wow.

I've definitely noticed a change in the condition of my hair since using expensive hair products, I mean I still have rubbish thin hair but atleast it looks healthier and shinier! I like kerastase and champo

Yes and no.
I found using BedHead made my hair feel absolutely amazing and looked healthier but it gave me a horrifically itchy scalp that seems to have stuck despite no longer using it.
Tresemme/Pantene work for a while then I have to switch them out.
I use head and shoulders on my scalp and currently using a Keratin one from Superdrug for my actual hair.
I have major hair thinning and tried specific shampoos to get it going, not found one that works yet but considering the Pantene one next.

Not quite the question but The Ordinary Hair Serum did work for my bad thinning.

Aussie makes my hair feel like straw, does smell delightful though and I know others which much nicer hair than me who love it.

Another shout out for pureology which is lovely and only a tiny amount is needed so lasts for ages. I also got mini colour wow shampoo and conditioner and they left my hair looking silky and smooth.

I second Pureology.
I never suffered from dry hair until I hit my 40s. I tried a few different budget friendly and expensive brands, and found Pureology to be the best. I think the one I use is the hydrating formula, in the lavender colour bottles. It's made a huge difference to my hair.

I only use baby shampoo cheap one at that.
Once a week i do give my hair a condition with cheap kids conditioner.
My hair is really healthy strong shiny, mind you i did shave it to the skin 3 year ago, and got all the dye out went back to basics, really worth it.

I had the Sisley hair masks in the Liberty BD box about 4 months ago - brilliant stuff! I went on to buy even though it was £££’s (using BD subscription build up) and don’t regret it.

As others have said, not necessarily expensive, just that a certain product will suit your hair and it may be one of the expensive ones. I’m having success with Kerastase Gloss Absolu at the moment. Also love Christophe Robin. But Colour Wow Money Mist is also fabulous and not as expensive as the other two.

Another vote for Olaplex products - totally transformed my frizzy hair
