Indian wedding help

Am going to a British/Indian wedding later this summer. Actual wedding in church, all straightforward. Party the night before with Indian food and dancing. The Indian women will be in lehengas. Dress code is very open so I don’t have to look for a lehenga, though I am open to the idea. I definitely want something bright and fun. Happy to look at Vinted etc, but wondering if anyone has ideas.

I’m 5’4 and a size 18-20. Would rather not have lots of midriff showing, but a sliver is okay.

I do love [https://www.next.co.uk/style/su962124/w15634 this]] and would definitely wear it again. I know it would be a bit on the casual side, but maybe okay?

Gosh that dress is lovely.

One friend went to an the Indian wedding of a colleague. The colleague arranged for a relative to ensure they had suitable clothes - I think they were lent saris; they all went to one house on the morning of the wedding, and Indian relatives dressed them! Might be worth finding out if anything like that is being arranged. it's worth saying that a sari is basically a rectangular piece of cloth, so doesn't fit as such (and is hard to put on, so my friend definitely needed help with that).

Nope. And am definitely not doing a sari.

That dress is gorgeous, I would go with that. It's lovely.

Fusion dresses which are more European in style but colourful and embroidered/beaded work well - areas with high Asian populations will have many shops, often prices are reasonable and some tailoring is available. That said I’ve always borrowed for Asian weddings, it was definitely the done thing to go full on Indian wedding wear where I lived and borrowing was the norm. I gave worn saris but they were “cheat” ones because i couldn’t do it myself

Perfect. Agree with loads of make up.

Can you give an actual link

It depends on how “Indian” the wedding is. Traditionally, Indian weddings are very dressy affairs and the outfits need to be over the top. Lots of gold embroidery, plenty of jewellery, big skirts etc. Basically, the theme is “gold”.

The dress you linked to is lovely but too simple for an Indian wedding. It would be akin to showing up in a beach dress to an English wedding. But it depends on how traditional the family and the event is.

Lehenga is a great idea but maybe try to find one with some embroidery or beading on it. Alternatively, how about a kaftan?

I dont know - I think the dress is perfect. I am white, married to a British Sikh guy. I would go for a lengha (doesnt have to be midriff baring!) and I dont wear tons of jewellery because I dont feel comfortable wearing that much. But wear whatever you feel comfortable in! I definitely don;t think its the equivalent of wearing a beach dress to a UK wedding!

PotolKimchi · Yesterday 18:53

Indian here. That dress is great. All the Indian people will be in Indian clothes and lots of make up/gold jewellery. You don't need to match that but that definitely wouldn't be too casual for an Indian wedding.

Thank you all. I have ordered the Love and Roses dress and will report back.

Sorry! If it’s any consolation, I have been eyeing them up for months. There are a lot of them I love.

As its in Britain I reckon you can wear that dress and it will be fine. It's a very nice dress but slightly plain for an Indian wedding.

I've been to a wedding in India and I needed about 5 outfits. Lehengas mostly - two being very OTT with lots of sequins and gold embroidery and I hired appropriate gold jewellery.

Have just realised my post is not completely clear - this is for the jaggo the night before, not the actual wedding. And although the bride is Indian, the groom is not and the wedding is not quite as full-on as a fully Indian wedding might be.

What about something like this? https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/6401764766-asian-party-dress
or if you do look on Vinted, search for “anarkali gown”, these are basically long dresses with no midriff showing. FYI, I am south asian and didn’t care what type of clothing people wore to my wedding! Happy shopping!

If you can’t find anything, a satin maxi dress in a jewel tone with statement makeup would work

clareykb · Yesterday 22:47

I went to a British Indian wedding a few years ago and wore a monsoon maxi very similar to that lovely one you linked got some jewellery from a south Asian shop near where we live. I was happy with it and lots of non Indian guests wore similar... And I wore it on holiday later so that was a bonus.
