Can I carry off walking shorts on holiday despite hating my legs?

Hi I need a pair of shorts just to wear for walking this holiday . I have always hated my legs and NEVER wear shorts but have decided that I really need a pair as it’s too hot to wear cropped trousers
my question is this can I really wear these? Please be honest but gentle x

Of course you can wear shorts! Shorts are made for hot weather so wear the shorts!

Shedmistress · 18/07/2026 15:47

Nobody gives a shit about anyone else's legs.

GreenFootstool · 18/07/2026 15:47

Of course. Shorts are for all legs.

Whether you like your legs or not doesn't matter in terms of wearing the shorts.

Wear the damn shorts!

Backtobroc · 18/07/2026 15:49

Of course you can carry it off

but doesn’t sound as though you’ll be the least bit confident or happy whilst out and about

TheMarriageOfAirAndFrock · 18/07/2026 15:53

How can you possibly hate the very legs that will enable you to enjoy a walk-involving holiday?

Where’s the logic in that?

category12 · 18/07/2026 15:55

What's actually wrong about your legs?

If you're not going to feel comfortable in them, just wear something long and floaty.

But seems a shame to limit yourself over something as arbitrary as leg-shape.

Gettingbysomehow · 18/07/2026 15:56

I wear these. They are the height of comfort and silkiness and cover my somewhat saggy weight loss legs. They are also very cool to wear. I like the patterns but you can get plain. They also do shorts.

You’ll be self-conscious the first 24 hours. Then you’ll be fine about it and above all extremely happy you took the plunge!

I hate my legs, but around 5 years ago I thought fuck it, and bought some for my holidays. My legs are short, I have super chunky calves and various thread veins. I chose shorts that are slightly wider on the thigh - nothing tight fitting - and I usually put on some legg cc cream to even up the tone a bit. And then I enjoy my holiday and don’t worry about it. No-one points and stares, no-one cares.

SemmaLina · 18/07/2026 16:01

Wear the shorts
Just make sure you got sun lotion on as your legs haven’t seen the sun for a while and need protection!

TheCurious0range · 18/07/2026 16:01

No one else cares, just wear the shorts!

Chickenlicken15 · 18/07/2026 16:01

Thank you ! As you all say no one else is going to care what I look like !

Men never ever worry about their legs, do they, ancient men, overweight men, men with skin issues do not even think twice about this

set yourself free set your legs free

DrumsPleaseFab · 18/07/2026 16:05

I am 55 with cellulite and veins and prematurely sagging knee caps and wear shorts all the time 😁

Yetone · 18/07/2026 16:08

OP, nobody cares about your legs. However, I walk a lot in the Scottish Highlands and I always wear trousers so that I don’t get ticks on my bare legs.

Tends not to be terribly hot in the Highlands though.

TheBewleySisters · 18/07/2026 16:10

I was fretting about how I looked in a bikini or swimsuit (and I was young and slim at the time!) and a wiser, older, woman said to me: "There will always be someone younger and slimmer than you, and there will always be someone older and fatter than you, so don't let anyone's opinions stop you from having a nice time."

HughManity · 18/07/2026 16:12

Why hate your legs? Mine are great - I wouldn't be able to walk without them.

With shorts, pick the length that you like best.

I hate cropped trousers and wear shorts at home all year round.

Yes - or if not ticks, then brambles, nettles etc.

AnnaBelIa · 18/07/2026 16:14

Why do you hate your legs?? Shorts are for everyone and during this heatwave its understandable to wear less.

lechatnoir · 18/07/2026 16:27

I sympathise op I too absolutely hate my legs - masses of broken veins all up the backs of my legs, awful cellulite, cankles, fat knees. Honestly they are bad but Im a teacher and take PE so have had to invest in shorts. Not too long (honestly, they look even worse) baggy sports/running shorts are best men’s L lots of fake tan and remember you’ll be the only one who’s bothered.

TheChosenTwo · 18/07/2026 17:01

My legs are quite slim and toned and brown (I know, you’re thinking, what could she possibly have to complain about then?) but the backs of them are covered in silvery stretch marks from years of being heavier than I am now. Initially I was self conscious about wearing shorts and then I wondered what the worst thing would be that could happen, played it out in my head. The worst thing I could think of would be people pointing and staring, whispering about my stretch marked legs. I went out in my shorts and noticed nothing of the sort. No one batted a single eyelid at my legs. And now I wear shorts all the bloody time and even if anyone is thinking mean things about my legs they are at least decent enough to keep this to themselves.
I don’t think anyone really notices op, and even if they do, they are most likely not to say anything and draw further attention to your insecurities.
free them (but put suncream on! You don’t want them to sizzle if they’re not used to the sun!).

POMSFlowerInsectTimedCount · 18/07/2026 20:29

Long (Bermuda-length) shorts! I have a pair I got from Decathlon last year and they are fab. My problem is not leg hatred, but laziness. Bermuda shorts represent the right compromise between my lack of commitment to depilation and lack of enthusiasm for wasting good sunny weather worrying about hairy legs and whether I or anyone else gives much of a damn.

I couldn't find suitable shorts for running, so I bought some incredibly thin and stretchy second-skin cropped leggings instead. Decathlon again. They are excellent - you only know you're wearing them because of the waistband. They've stood up surprisingly well to brambles and what have you and I wish I'd bought two pairs while I could, because they don't have that exact style any more.

Brightlittlecanary · 18/07/2026 20:30

Literally no one is going to be looking ay your legs. Shorts are very common attire.

Pumpup · 18/07/2026 20:34

Wear the shorts.
I have awful legs, and if I’m ever momentarily looking at someone’s legs it’s because I’m thinking I wish I had their confidence.
