Can I carry off walking shorts on holiday despite hating my legs?

Hi I need a pair of shorts just to wear for walking this holiday . I have always hated my legs and NEVER wear shorts but have decided that I really need a pair as it’s too hot to wear cropped trousers
my question is this can I really wear these? Please be honest but gentle x

OP I am self conscious about my legs too but had to buy some shorts as they’re just so much more practical for some activities.

I got these - and liked them so much I bought multiple colours. Look out of stock but sign up for when they are back in stock - so flattering, spacious etc.

I honestly feel good and actually look quite good in them. Even saw a photo and it was fine. 10/10 would recommend.

Tends not to be terribly hot in the Highlands though.

Ticks aren't confined to the Scottish Highlands. In the unlikely (no chance at all) event of my going on a walking holiday in the countryside I would not wear shorts.

Its a real thing - I’m in my thirties (DH say I’m in my prime and better than I was in my 20s!), 5’9 and slim size 8-10, regular gym and Pilate goer four or five times a week and the thought of shorts fills me with dread because how they will look on my legs! The reality is, no one will care. I much prefer a skirt or skort , it fits better than shorts IMO.

NormasArse · 18/07/2026 20:44

I’m 60 and on the chubby side. I wear shorts from March/april- October every year. I couldn’t give a hoot!

TheSunnySwan · 18/07/2026 20:46

Wear the shorts nobody else will care

Flomingho · 18/07/2026 20:48

Please wear the shorts. I spent all my 20's and 30's not wearing shorts because I didn't like my legs and now I am in my mid 40's and have had somewhat of an epiphany as I am suffering hot flushes and wear them all the time during hot weather. People come in all shapes and sizes. I wish I did this years ago.

Minasama · 18/07/2026 20:51

Nothing wrong with wearing shorts in hot weather!

Or cold if that’s what you damn well want

I was like you @Chickenlicken15 and this year I just thought fuck it, I'm wearing shorts, it's too hot for anything else. I even travelled on a plane in shorts for my holiday. Do you what happened? Absolutely nothing. Life just carried on as normal. No one fainted at the sight of my legs, no babies cried and no animals were harmed.

Wear the shorts. Maybe put some self tan on if you feel a bit pasty, but most of all, have a great holiday.

countrylife00 · 18/07/2026 21:02

Do you need walking shorts or any shorts?
I hate wearing shorts and this year bought just above the knee wide leg M&S shorts.
I am slim, but don’t like my legs.
The shorts are really flattering and I have had loads of compliments.

Nobody gives a shit about anyone else's legs.

This!

Good point. I also plaster my legs with fake tan.
So far no one has suffered an injury looking at my legs!

TheVeryAngryBanana · 18/07/2026 21:21

Of course you can wear them! You might be more comfortable in a pair of desert weight walking trousers. Not to hide your legs, but to reduce the amount of suncream, to protect against scratches and scuffs, fewer insect bites, less likely to overheat because less skin in the sun, no sock tan lines, option to wear more comfortable socks and boots. Bring out the shorts when you get back at the end of the day. Love from a geologist who's done lots of hiking in the sun!

Gengha · 18/07/2026 21:34

I’m fat and ol with terrrible legs and I wear shorts. I stopped giving a shit a few years ago and now prioritise my comfort. Wear them

GrillaMilla · 18/07/2026 21:38

You'll be on holiday and never see those people again, they won't care.

Gettingbysomehow · 18/07/2026 22:04

As long as you've got human legs you should be ok.
The only place I havent felt comfortable in skimpies was France. My cousin and I got pointed comments from other beach users about our cellulite and weight. I was royally pissed off by the end of the holiday.

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 18/07/2026 22:19

Please wear shorts, as everyone says nobody cares what you legs look like.
Put some insect repellent on your legs if it is a tick area, and enjoy the air on your pins, I do!

Justdontwanttodothisnomore · 18/07/2026 22:22

You can buy walking trousers that have zips to remove the bottom part to convert to shorts so you have the best of both worlds & gives you more choices if you're sure.
Most people are too self absorbed to worry what others are wearing. As long as you're cool and they feel comfortable on, then go for it!

These are a good idea as it is sometimes cool in the early morning and then when it warms up you can zip off the bottoms.

NotMeNoNo · 19/07/2026 08:04

I find zip off trousers the worst thing for my legs, they sit so strangely with the bulky zip at an unflattering place. That was decades ago though so they might have improved.
OP I suggest go to Go Outdoors or Decathlon and try on a bunch of shorts. I don't like getting my legs out either but found some slightly stretchy mid length ones that aren't too bad. There comes a point where you look more silly by not wearing shorts when it's the obvious thing to do.

PinkEasterbunny · 19/07/2026 08:14

I am currently away on holiday and i’m not taking much notice of anyone’s legs

OneLimePombear · 19/07/2026 08:18

Do your legs work, well yes obviously, you are going on a walking holiday, try and focus on that.

TBH nobody looks that good in walking shorts.

Ethelspagetti · 19/07/2026 08:23

I hate my legs in shorts and have avoided them for over 20 years. Lately perimenopausal hot flashes coinciding with the hot weather, has made me reconsider. I’ve bought myself 4 pairs of shorts. I still hate my legs but I feel happier and cooler. I’ve not caught one person looking at my legs! All this time I could have been wearing them and feeling better in the sun!

Chickenlicken15 · 19/07/2026 17:35

Thanks everyone have ordered some shorts I think the thought is always worse then the doing !

I hate my spider veins. I have just come back home from a walk in my local park (in bermuda shorts) and I did not feel good about how I looked. That sounds pathetic and vain but it’s true that, had I worn a nicer outfit I would have had more spring in my step.
If I were hiking in mountains I would not care and would dress for comfort, but in an urban environment I like to look good, so I generally avoid shorts.
You might feel the same way!
