This is my dress

I’ve really struggled to find something but I love this and feel great in it even though it’s not a traditional MOB type dress. I’m worried it’s not smart enough though - should I try to dress it up a bit? I’ve got nude sandals and a cream suede clutch and was planning minimal silver jewellery as I think anything else would clash with the pattern. Do I need something on my head? I’ve got short hair so won’t have a fancy up do just a nice blow dry. I really want to look my best for my daughter but still feel like me.

Red Cotton Broderie Midi Dress

Beautiful dress.

The ankle strap kitten heels you've posted are lovely. When you said 'sandals' I had birkenstocks or chunky, fisherman type sandals in my mind.

I’m very definitely a Birkenstock person day to day!

Soon to be MOB myself and I love your dress. I went to a friend’s daughter’s wedding recently in a beautiful church and v expensive country hotel but even though the men were in morning suits, the dress vibe was cotton dresses, comfortable and understated. I think your dress is perfect. Me personally? I would wear heels for the wedding and change into flats or wedges for the evening. As long as you are relaxed and have a smile on your face you will be beautiful and no high heels will ever compensate for that. I also noticed that the 3 people wearing hats were out of place. Apart from you, the next person in line to approve your dress is your daughter. Have a lovely wedding!

Fennelundbeans · 18/07/2026 17:19

You ✔️ daughter ✔️ everyone else’s opinion doesn’t matter x

eatreadsleeprepeat · 18/07/2026 17:33

I would accentuate the crisp white and red, summer almost nautical with a white hat, not a twirly fancy one but something like a boater.

JoJuniorShabadoo · 18/07/2026 20:59

Oh god no yo a boater

KierkegaardsUnderpants · 18/07/2026 21:21

No hat. Red suede platform sandals and bag.

nzeire · 18/07/2026 21:27

Oh it’s GORGEOUS!!!! Let the dress speak for itself I think! It has enough going on!

its the right amount of right!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 18/07/2026 23:35

Cream kitten heel sling backs and bag. Boater hats are 100% in this year. I’d look for a straw one but they must have a decent width of brim. No school
type ones.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 18/07/2026 23:41

Something like this but with a red flower? It goes with the vibes of the dress.

No idea about styling but the fabric looks gorgeous, not at all casual, v suitable for a wedding. I agree with keeping accessories maybe just one colour, all silver or all gold depending on your jewellery preference.

limetrees32 · 19/07/2026 08:52

Lovely !
I'm in the gold accessories camp
Those nude M&S sandals come in gold

ProfessorofDarkArts · 19/07/2026 08:56

I did originally pick them up in gold but it was a bit of a harsh yellow gold not the softer colour I was hoping for.

What do we feel about mixing metals for jewellery? I’ve got a very small silver nose stud and a special ring I want to wear also silver so I’d assumed best to stick to that colour for any necklace/bracelet/earrings.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 19/07/2026 09:35

I’m not a fan of harsh gold. Older ladies on a cruise ship look. Avoid! The dress is bright, so toned down accessories work better because they are competing with the dress. To be honest stick with off white, or have a straw clutch bag? Accessories need to be neutral. If you have silver, that’s what you have but earrings, necklace etc should be in the same metal. Does anyone match a nose stud? Think more about earrings and a necklace, as they are most visible.

OMG. A white boater 😂

That would be hilariously awful.

WillTheRealDeanGaffneyPleaseStandUp · 19/07/2026 10:24

A boater. 🤣 you do know these photos will be forever? A boater might be ok for holiday snaps but not for wedding photos.

Funnily enough though, I did think of the Pretty Woman dress when I saw this one. No idea why.

Op - to clarify reminding me of the Pretty Woman dress isnt a bad thing.

OP, do not mix metals!

I agree with @GreenCandleWax that some chunky bracelets would make it look dressy and intentional.

Maybe if you’re completely dead set on those shoes, you could have all silver jewellery elsewhere

ProfessorofDarkArts · 19/07/2026 10:41

I’d love to look like Pretty Woman!

I am keen to keep the shoes, they’re comfy and I can walk in them which is not a given with smart shoes and I think they go well with the dress.

I love the idea of a chunky bangle but not certain I could pull off a boater without looking like I have a side hustle doing punting tours or selling ice cream 🤣

TheMarriageOfAirAndFrock · 19/07/2026 10:47

(Point of order: I’m currently spending most days of the week sitting beside a river heavily populated with tourists being ferried around in every possible sort of water vessel, including punts manned by undergrads. I have not seen anyone wearing a boater all summer … 😅)

Newstartplease24 · 19/07/2026 11:30

Love the dress. red platform sandals, a bit late 70s jilly cooper, would be lovely

can you wear something like this (and maybe change later):

Oh they are very cool! I love the idea of being a Jilly Cooper heroine, that’s perfect for me!

It’s a lovely dress. Sorry not loving the nude shoes though and I’m normally a bit fan of nude shoes . I’d go with matching them to a colour you’re wearing so white or jewellery colour

Jungfraujoch · 19/07/2026 13:39

Gorgeous dress and the sandals are perfect with it. I’d go for a neutral fascinator and bag. Personally I’d wear gold jewellery with it but if silver your thing then that’s fine too. But agree maybe a chunky bangle or stack rather then a delicate bracelet.

Gorgeous dress. Not a fan of kitten heels or of nude shoes generally though.

I’d probably go for white block heeled sandals and a ‘straw’ bag.
