Sandals for 20k steps a day on city break

EverytimeItPours · Yesterday 09:59

i really can’t do trainers in very hot weather but I need something very comfortable for walking 20k plus steps a day. I’ve looked at Skechers, fitflop, teva but I think I need a recommendation. Has anyone found any with good arch support and very cushioned soles which might fit the bill?
I know there are lots of actual hiking sandals but I’d like something more attractive if possible

Passenger do suuuper comfy sandals!

SheilaFentiman · Today 07:24

Merrell Kahuna, but they aren’t stylish 😀

Woden all the way if you want something that looks half decent and is also super comfy. From someone who was previously always in the Keen/ Teva camp. The other brand that (if you can get round the granny bit) that do incredibly comfy sandals is Gabor, have walked miles in theirs too.

These guys do the Woden ones, but there are other stockists in the UK I’m sure.

I’d go to a proper outdoor wear shop and look at walking sandals from a decent make - Merrell or similar. The fit’s the important thing, and they all look pretty similar. Something like this:

Keen are my choice as well. I have these ones and also these

They are both great for all walking city and light track walking and also good on the beach

They are seriously comfortable

I would not.call them attractive though. They are both pretty fugly. I just dont care about what they look like when it comes to foot comfort on long walks.
😄

I find Vionic sandals the best for contoured arch support. The difficulty is finding an option that fits your foot well, as their closures don't seem to have a high degree of adjustability.

Their website has a filter that lets you look for 'walking sandals'. They definitely aren't 'hiking' sandals, but if you get the right one for your foot they would be very comfortble for 20k urban footsteps.

MagicKittens · Today 07:35

Is it just me for whom all sandals pick up grit and grass seeds, and become instruments of torture anyway?

KeeepWalking · Today 07:42

I'm a big fan of tevas, have been wearing them for decades!

ShowOfHands · Today 07:47

I live in Teva walking sandals in the summer. I've hiked miles and miles on all sorts of terrain, through rivers and up and down hills.

But then I don't give a shit about what they look like, only that they're fit for purpose.

Francestein · Today 07:48

They’re not cheap (although they always have sales and you can buy on Amazon also), but SOREL have amazing walking sandals. For lots of walking, I find these are supportive and have great traction. You can usually find something to suit your taste as most can be dressed up or down. I would always read the reviews (on SOREL site and Amazon) re sizing as sometimes you need to size up.

I feel like I spend a significant part of my life looking for footwear that doesn't hurt my feet. And there have been many expensive mistakes along the way. My top 3 in reverse order:

Tevas - not actively uncomfortable, no rubbing but didn't completely do it for me - too flat.

FitFlop - good on comfort for the most part but some rubbing from the leather kind and, with the plastic/rubbery kind, your feet can still feel hot in them because the inside of them is just the same plastic stuff as the outside.

Josef Seibel - in particular, the Tonga range. Good arch support, soft insole, adjustable straps. Better looking than many in the arena. I was able to walk a long way in them right out of the box.

But it's all a matter of trial and error ultimately. Good luck with your quest, OP.

You’re never going to look smart in a pair of these ….. but your feet won’t hurt. I walked all round New York in a pair of these for 4 or 5 days running, 10 to 12 miles each day. I also wore them for white water rafting in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Although to be honest, I don’t think they are THAT ugly. No worse than a pair of running shoes. They have a good range of colours.

pippistrelle · Today 08:02

Oh my, I clicked on the link for the Keen sandals because, as I said, I'm always looking for comfortable footwear. They must be comfortable because no one is buying those for aesthetic reasons... A step too far for me!

shutterswhitemein · Today 08:04

Saw a woman wearing Nike sandals on a plane recently that looked like trainers on the sole but with straps. Looked really comfy for travel and walking.

TakeThatAndParty81 · Today 08:08

vionic have been good for me

Iamnotavicar · Today 08:09

I've got the fitflop hyker too and they are good for me. I have plantar fascitis and dropped arches, and get a lot of pain underfoot, but these are great for pounding the pavements. I've just come back from 2 weeks of a lot of city walking and I've not had to think about my feet and what they are up to. They aren't pretty but they work!

Podiatrist has advised me to always wear arch support inserts and only wear cushioned lace up shoes ie trainers, so even to wear sandals for a couple of weeks has been liberating.

I find the saltwater sandals with soft soles great for walking all day, their more traditional ones are too flat and hard for long days on your feet, but specifically the soft sole range, i have the boardwalk ones and use them for airports and city breaks and they are just great. Not cheap but they are 3 years old so far and going strong

My early 20s DD got tendonitis in her foot from wearing a pair of these on a 2-week holiday. She wasn’t walking huge distances. She walked to a different beach each day, spent the day on the beach and then walked home again. Then out for dinner (on foot) in the evening. She was OK for the first 10ish days and then the pain started.

GimmieABreakOr3 · Today 08:13

I read the title as you were looking for sandals for £20k initially 😂

ReflectiveGilet · Today 08:20

I’m on a city break right now in silver Arizona’s and we are averaging 20k a day in steps they are fine but I’ve worn birks for 20 years anyway

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · Today 08:21

I'm also voting for Teva Tirras.

I have a slimline pair (the Traveller version I think) for everyday sightseeing and the sporty version with toe protection for more rugged walks.

Calmontheoutsider · Today 08:36

I thoroughly recommend the Hotter Tourist sandals. They come in a variety of widths and colours:

Trespass sandals are fantastic. Cheap as chips, last years, incredibly comfortable, not hideously ugly. I discovered them by accident a few years ago and they’ve been one of my best ever buys. I walk a lot, probably do 20k steps 4 or 5 days a week as normal, and they’re absolutely good as new, and still feel great too.

I never wear sandals for heat or long walks, just for dressing up TBH. There are far too many opportunities for every sandal I have ever worn to end up too tight over the instep, rub at the heel and so on, especially when feet swell in hot weather.

So.... I have two pairs of backless slip on mule type trainers. Got them in Spain, but they are widely available. Mesh/knitted type fabric, not expensive, but OMG they are so light and feet never rub, no straps, no socks needed, and I can walk miles in them. Just my opinion on holiday walking footwear!

Edited

And when you say they are widely available… could you perhaps provide a link? I can’t imagine what it is you are referring to and would like to see them.

I have been wearing very ugly keen and merrell sandals, due to bunions and gait issues, have forgotten what having attractive footwear might be like!

MyCatTibby · Today 08:38

Have a look at Moshulu. I did 15k steps in these yesterday.

The underfoot is soft suede so doesn’t make your feet hot and sweaty.
