Which dress for the evening do of a wedding?

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 18:33

I posted in AIBU, panicked, and now I have two choices

Dress one:

https://www.nobodyschild.com/products/butter-yellow-shirred-halter-neck-tizzy-midi-dress-d255470ylw

Dress two:

https://www.asos.com/prd/210378452?acquisitionsource=pasteboard

Planned accessories are the blue bag and shoes linked.

Which one do I go for?! It’s a distant relative’s evening do at a mid-July wedding. We’re due for a heatwave so I don’t want to be massively covered.

I will wear my hair down in loose curls

It doesn’t bother me either! In fact I find cotton and linen really hot to wear. I prefer man made
fabrics as to me they’re lighter more floaty and cooler.

I’ve got some linen trousers from H&M which are lovely but the same from M&S are so heavy! I sew a lot too, and tend to use a lot of polycotton

Dress 2 is awful. The whole fit of it is just wrong although maybe that is the model as she looks very overweight and it just doesn’t suit her figure at all.

Dress 1 and the brown dress are ok, but I’d keep looking if I was you.

She’s a size 18 (the same as me!), she hardly looks very overweight, she looks gorgeous!

I think the lemon is a strange colour for evening, and a bit "primroses and bluebells" with the blue accessories, but maybe I would not have reacted that way if I had known it was a barbecue.

The brown is probably safer but are you a 4 or 14?!

I’m an 18.

I think it looks awful on her, the dress doesn’t suit her. She is too large of arse and belly for that style of dress to look its best imo. She’d look better in other things, less tank like. Opinions may vary. Wear what you like of course but you asked for opinions.

Ah was that in stock too. I just noticed everything was wiped out between 4 and 14!

But sold out is a good sign! I think the brown style looks ideal for a barbecue.

Yeah their sales sell out super fast because they do such good deals

I’m so glad I don’t look at other women the way you look at them. How unkind.

No, loads of people are not fine with it. Many people dislike polyester - apologies if that's too "mumsnet" for you.

You’re being really annoying.

people are trying to help and answer your question and you are being sarky.

and to answer your question-neither dress. The yellow one is shapeless and cheat looking. The second one is boxy and unflattering.

keep looking

🤣 that's a very enigmatic reply, goes with your username!

Another vote here for Dress 2, OP 🤩

Good choice on the brown dress OP, I think you’ll find that neckline cool and comfortable and it should look lovely with your blue accessories.

The ASOS dress 2 wasn’t nice, the yellow was gorgeous.

I'm being really annoying?? Did you mean to quote the op?!

Definitely dress 2.

Dress 1 is too casual, IMHO.

It was a tongue in cheek comment.

Seeing as I didn’t mention about fibres in my original post, and linked to a polyester dress, and have a tight budget, it’s safe to say that I don’t care too much about what fibre the dress is made of.

Was that necessary?

Im glad you’ve found a dress you like but are you sure the accessories will go? Brown and blue?

I think chocolate brown and light blue looks gorgeous together!

Dress 2 is awful but I do think it’s the models figure. A high neck when you have big boobs doesn’t work. I agree with the poster who says she is overweight with large hips and belly and the shape and material of the dress aren’t flattering. It may look better on someone else.

The brown dress is nice. The yellow one, dress 1 looks very casual.

Brown and light blue look good together.

basingstokebluesfortwos · 05/07/2026 15:05

Out of the two id say dress 1 is the nicest but it’s something I’d wear on a day to day basis it’s a bit too casual. But if the weddings casual then I’d say wear it. Not a fan of the print/style of dress 2

Sidebeforeself · 05/07/2026 15:56

Not to me they don’t but I’m not wearing the dress!

OP asked for opinions on the dress, not opinions on the model’s body.

Honestly I'd wear dress 1 with some lovely accessories. In heat it's definitely going to be the most comfortable and the bow at the back makes it special enough given it's a distant relative's BBQ evening do. Maybe a floppy straw hat with some matching flowers on if that's your thing.

I've just bought an alternative dress for my daughters graduation - much simpler than the one I had planned but it's scheduled to be anything between 29-33 degrees on the day and I'd rather look less flash and be comfy and enjoy myself tbh.
