How many clothes do you own and actually wear regularly?

CrowsInMyGarden · 03/07/2026 15:05

I have so many clothes. I only wear a small percentage of them. I have sorted out lots of stuff to sell on Vinted/Give to charity shop. This is the year that I finally get shot of all the stuff that I don't fit into, all the stuff that is uncomfortable, all the stuff that just doesn't look right......

Just wondering really how many of each item does the average person own? I don't suppose there is such a thing as an average person but hit me with your answers.

How many of the following do you own and do you wear everyting in your wardrobe?

Dresses
Skirts
Jeans
joggers
smart trousers
nice tops
t shirts
shorts
Jumpers

Anything else

Like most people I'm guilty of buying/ owning more than I wear. Partly because my weight has fluctuated a lot, partly just because I buy stuff and then realise it doesn't suit me/ doesn't quite fit right/ I don't have an occasion to wear it, etc etc, and never get round to getting rid of it.

I don't know numbers for all those categories you've listed, but it's definitely more than I need. There is not really any free space in my wardrobe or drawers for more stuff, put it that way (and I also have couple of cases of clothes in storage).

I am trying to get better, though, and I don't buy fast fashion.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 03/07/2026 15:26

I also don't have numbers, but after being ill and then retiring early, I have a load of work clothes to get rid of. I've sold 44 things on Vinted, and given around 30 things to charity. I've also forced myself to wear things I've not been wearing, and then finding out exactly why 😂 So gathering more things to get rid of.

I have loads of space in my wardrobe and drawers now, but still have plenty to wear!

PhaedraTwo · 03/07/2026 16:05

Dresses - 80/90? Maybe more?
Skirts - about a dozen?
Jeans - none
joggers-none
smart trousers-none
nice tops-about a dozen shirts and blouses, maybe more?
t shirts - none
shorts - none
Jumpers- mainly cardigans 30/40?

I wear something different every day to work and change to something different every evening and I do try to make sure everything gets worn eventually. I'm out a lot too.

PermanentTemporary · 03/07/2026 16:11

Dresses - 10
Skirts - 1
Jeans - 2
joggers-2
smart trousers-6
nice tops- 8
t shirts - 6
shorts - 1
Jumpers- 10

Work uniforms 4
Jumpsuits 1

Tbh a few of the dresses are no good to me any more. I’m good at ruining clothes.

Picassosdove · 03/07/2026 16:40

Dresses 10
skirts 3
jeans 4
joggers 0
smart trousers 5
nice tops 20
t shirts 12
shorts 0
jumpers (and cardigans) 10

Use the Whering app so can be quite specific. I’ve culled so much over the past few years and only keep stuff I really love.

SequinnedMac · 03/07/2026 17:06

I’ve also culled many clothes over the past year or so. A mixture of weight loss and wanting a more simplified wardrobe, less excess in general.
It definitely didn’t happen overnight but I know what suits me, what colours I like etc.

My wardrobe is much more coherent these days. I can pull outfits together with ease as I’m not endlessly sifting through things and most importantly, I actually like what I wear now. Less is more in this instance (for me anyway)

Papyrophile · 03/07/2026 17:40

I need to cull stuff that I will probably not wear again, or at least not very often, as we are planning to downsize. But I have clothes that I love, that remind of the favourite great aunt who bought them. So there are some treasures I'd be reluctant to part with unless they were given to another vintage enthusiast.

For the rest, I wear jeans and sweaters in winter and something similar but lighter weight and lighter colours in summer, and those get worn to death and then thrown. Almost everything still fits me, even at 70, but I do need a big sort out.

dudsville · 03/07/2026 18:13

After years of mismanaging how I shopped, having too many weird items that didn't go with anything else, and after many, many rounds of culls and working out what I like. I'm left with one wardrobe and one chest of drawers, and I no longer make that hideous pile of discarded clothes when trying to get dressed in the morning, and I don't have to store out of season things, but I do have more than I need.

I wear all my stuff, but sometimes a particular item is much loved but only goes with one other item, so it doesn't get as much wear as a more neutral item would. It would bore me to only have neutral stuff that goes with everything. I then have a few things that are very special. I do wear them, but they're for the odd celebration. I have two jumpers that are for the coldest of weather. They haven't been worn the last two winters, but I love them and they're staying.

EmmaB1309 · 03/07/2026 18:21

I don’t wear skirts, smart trousers unless I really need to (if by smart you mean tailored) or joggers.

Dresses- 2 or 3 for ‘going out’, plus a couple of summer dresses. Lucky if I wear a dress once or twice year.

jeans- 4-6 pairs, my most worn items

jumpers- a few hoodies plus one gorgeous knitted one from Monsoon that I love.

tshirts/casual tops- 8-10

smart/dressy tops - 4-6

shorts- 2/3

I also have a pair of cut off trousers for summer.

three play suits- one for summer, 2 dressy.

Meadowfinch · 03/07/2026 18:35

Summer - 10 work outfits, 10 shorts, t-shirts, casual stuff, some holiday clothes, sandals

Winter - 6 or 7 work outfits, 6 jeans, skirts, sweaters, boots.

A few evening dresses, assorted sports clothes, cold weather gear.

WillTraynor · 03/07/2026 18:40

I'm working on a new policy: around 10 t-shirts and two of everything else i.e. jackets, summer trousers, jeans, shorts, trainers, sandals, etc. I really don't think I need more than that.

Orchidgrower · 03/07/2026 19:33

I don't know the numbers, its a lot, but most of what is in my wardrobes and drawers does get worn at some point in the course of a year. There are a few things I need to sell or donate, but not many.

I do aim to have some space in my drawers and wardrobes so that it is easy to take clothes in and out. I am also pretty clumsy so things don't get many re-wears before they need washing or dry cleaning.

I need to wear suits and blouses for work. They are bulky so take up 3 to 4 feet of hanging space. Some are too big or small due to weight variation over the years, but they are expensive so worth keeping if in good condition in case my weight changes again.

Sports wear (2 pairs long leggings, 1 pair cropped leggings, 1 pair shorts, 2 vests, 2 t-shirts, 1 long sleeved top, 3 sports bras, fills 1 small drawer).

Casual wear such as jeans (about 8 pairs in different styles/condition) and t-shirts/tops/hoodies (a lot of t-shirts, about 6 long sleeved tops, 7 hoodies of different styles and thicknesses). 1 pair of summer trousers and 2 pairs of casual shorts. Some of the casual wear is scruffy clothes for days when I'm cleaning or gardening.

My preferred clothing is dresses and I like to have several to choose from & different styles for different weather / different occasions. I should probably get rid of some, but I don't want to. I have cardigans and long sleeved tops to wear with them in winter. I'm not as keen on skirts, but probably still have more than 10, some for summer and some for winter. Skirts and dresses probably occupy about 4 feet of hanging space.

I also have about 5 special occasion dresses, not all of which fit me, but I can't bring myself to get rid of them because I wouldn't recover anything like what they cost & I really like them. I did give a couple that I am definitely not going to wear again to a local charity boutique store.

I do try to be very intentional with what I add to my clothing and to keep reviewing what I have and parting with things.

I am lucky to have a big bedroom so I can have lots of clothing storage.

Silverbirchleaf · 03/07/2026 19:35

Too many, but I decided a while back that I don’t mind.

BiddyPopthe2nd · 03/07/2026 19:40

I don’t have the numbers but have to deal with a lot of weather and be professional in high heat and serious cold. I need to do something posh formal evening events. I have a sort of “uniform” of trousers, block colour blazers and block colour tops/jumpers for work in general…but also a few work dresses. I have adventure clothes and clothes for private life/off duty time. I have clothes from changing size /shape (but have tried to cull that).

worldshottestmom · 03/07/2026 19:41

Dresses - probably around 40 - wear most of these in summer and a few winter dresses in winter
Skirts - around 30-35 and wear 2, if that, in summer
Jeans - around 15 - wear 2 and not often
joggers - 10 that I wear solely in the house
Smart trousers - 1 that have never seen the light of day
Nice tops - going to say 100+ which I know is awful. I do wear a lot of them though, I'd say around 50-60 get worn in the year.
T shirts - about 2, I don't like t shirts
Shorts - around 15-20, barely wear as I have been training and now none of them fit and I'll be damned if I buy any more damn clothes.
Jumpers - around 20, wear all throughout winter, especially my oatmeal cashmere one that feels like heaven to wear 😍

Anything else - I live in flares most of the time tbh I just love them, or in summer its always dresses or a skirt and top.

Used to be a huge leggings person but times have changed in the last few years.

I own around 30 coats, I have a massive thing for coats. Thrifted a beautiful vintage fur coat this year for £15 from a French brand and I loveeeeee it.

I also own a large array of expensive lingerie, that never gets worn anymore cry sad times.

Oh and around 60-70 sets of pyjamas.

Thank you for making this thread OP. I stopped buying clothes completely in March of this year as I realised how ridiculous it was, but actually writing down the amount of clothes I have has made me realise I seriously need to sell/donate a lot of it.

Vinted here I come 🏃‍♀️

JustGiveMeReason · 03/07/2026 19:56

I was going to say "Loads!", but then I read some of the numbers given, and realise I am a lot more conservative than I thought! Grin

I retired a couple of years ago and have recently gone through all my clothes, to get rid of lots. So 'smart trousers' for example which I used to wear to work most days, were easy to cull.

We are empty nesters, so I am lucky enough to have spare wardrobe space, so I have kept all the "Clothes I haven't worn that in the last 3 months" in the wardrobe in my bedroom and am specifically looking in there for clothes each day. when I put them on, I am remembering why some of them haven't been worn (uncomfortable / crease really easily / bit tight / don't go with anything else / whatever reason), and am then putting them in the charity shop bag. A couple of other things, I've oddly had lots of compliments on and am putting them with my 'clothes to keep' in the wardrobe in the spare bedroom.
It has been a good exercise.

Morepositivemum · 03/07/2026 20:04

I don’t have a lot of clothes but recently pulled out what I can just say ‘I need to get changed/ go somewhere and feel like me/ feel comfy’. And I had some pyjamas, one pair of tracksuit bottoms, one skirt, one pair of trousers, one top, two tee shirts, one jumper. I work in a supermarket with a discount and ok clothes. I need to remedy this!!

Floisme · 03/07/2026 20:09

I have far too many clothes to be able to count but I probably have even more books and yet I’ve never been asked how many I’ve read.

I am stunned that anyone would have so many pairs of pyjamas! I don't have any! Two nightshirts and one nightie, in case of a hospital event. I sleep naked, and put joggers on in the morning.

Haha tbf I spend most my time inside so I like to have a choice lol. Its pretty embarrassing though i will admit

noonames · 03/07/2026 20:17

Dresses 6
Skirts 3
Jeans 12ish
joggers 4
smart trousers 8
nice tops 8
t shirts 20ish
shorts 4
jumpers 12

Anything else:
Casual summer trousers 6
Jumpsuit / boiler suit 2
Dungarees 1
Long sleeved T 8
Hoodies 4
Casual shirts 8

I wear the vast majority of it, depends mostly on the weather and whether I am feeling slightly portly or at my skinniest.

Arrivederla · 03/07/2026 20:37

I thought I had quite a lot of clothes until I read some of these posts!!

Someone gave me a tip a while back to hang everything up with all the hangers facing the same way; every time you wear a piece of clothing turn the hangers round. At the end of that season have a look at everything that hasn't been turned round and think about why you haven't worn it...

To be fair, this would only work if you've got a smallish number of clothes; if you've got 80 dresses then 🤷🏼‍♀️...

Justlurking8 · 03/07/2026 20:49

Dresses - 3 (never wear)
skirts - 5 (sometimes wear one occasionally in summer)
Jeans - 2 (lots in autumn/winter)
joggers - 6 (lots in spring/autumn/winter - I work from home)
smart trousers - 4 (couple times week in spring/autumn/winter)
nice tops - 4 (rarely wear one)
t shirts - 15 (lots)
shorts - 1 (rarely in summer)
jumpers - 9 (lots in spring/autumn/winter)

I think I need to address my weight instead of buying more clothes.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/07/2026 20:58

I have about 6 sundresses and about 6 ‘occasion’ dresses. The sundresses only get worn on holiday really, and the occasion dresses only for weddings or other smart events.

Jeans and smart trousers- 0 pairs Leggings- about 5 pairs
Skirts- 2
Shorts- 3
Vest tops- maybe 12
T shirts- 4 or 5
Shirts or blouses- 0
Nice tops- 2 or 3
Jumpers- none, but 4 or 5 hoodies

I don’t go out much 😂

What I do have quite a lot of is gym kit/practical walking clothes.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 03/07/2026 21:49

I have a lot of clothes.
I’m in the process of sorting out a bag of clothes to take to the charity shop.
I have to try and stop myself from buying more.
I don’t know his many clothes I have.
I have clothes I haven’t worn for years.
What I don’t have many of are pyjamas - 2 pairs plus 2 nightshirts, but I don’t wear anything in bed so it’s more if I am going away and sharing accommodation with someone other than dh.
Also jeans. I only have 4 pairs and always wear the same pair if I ever wear jeans.
