I’m broke, what can take the place of Botox?

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 27/06/2026 21:07

I’ve been getting my 11s, forehead, and crows feet done for about 3/4 years, usually every 7-8 months.

But now I’m broke, and my crows feet in particular are beginning to bother me, and my left eyelid feels a bit droopy and uncomfortable.

Is there anything that remotely compares? I can’t use tret, i have eczema and my skin can’t take it.

Does anyone have any ideas? Please?

Acceptance that lines, crows feet etc are beautiful, and society and social media have brainwashed many into thinking their worth comes from looking young. Imagine the world where no one gave a sh*t about Botox and looks. Wouldn’t that be a beautiful world to live in. Also - Botox makes your look older anyway. With a weird plastic look and it fools no one.

I have no idea what age you are but as an ex Botox lover, I’m so glad I gave up at 54. My friends who have continued at the same age can’t hide all the other signs of aging and have that moon forehead that shouts BOTOX

That’s so true about the moon forehead. All the celebs, well most of them, have had plastic surgery however well done. Seeing someone up close in a cafe in daylight with fillers, Botox and god knows what else, she looked her age and more and a definite “tweaked” look. Jocelyn Wildenstein is a prime example of plastic surgery gone too far.

Toober · 27/06/2026 21:55

I love argireline mentioned upthread, does wonders on my frown line. Doesn't seem to help my crows feet unfortunately but that might be because they're fairly bad. A good acid might help too if your skin can manage it.

Edit: spelling

It baffles me honestly that we are living through awful climate crisis as a result of over consumption and people are not even rethinking their lifestyle choices on the level of ‘probably don’t need to inject poison in my face to look younger.’ What the hell is it going to take for us to STOP?!

It's horrifying seeing the ostrich like behaviour isn't it?

Oh WHY does every thread about Botox have to feature that woman, who had every procedure under the sun and looked genuinely insane? It’s ridiculous.

Gosh all the moralising! This is in Style & Beauty. The OP isn’t asking for advice on ageing acceptance or judgement on the triviality of her question.

Im sorry I thought this board was style and beauty and not pseudo ethical living and wellness horseshit?

Of course OP should ask about what is a suitable alternative on this board, what are the rest of ye even doing here?

OP ive a fear of needles so no botox here but ive found good results with tret staying hydrated and a caffeine eye cream. Its not the same as professional help, it never will be but its a good cover all till you night be able to afford it again.

Maybe though, OP is genuinely not beautiful. Maybe she needs treatments to be able to show her face in public. Most people are average, some people are beautiful (few) and some are really neither and should have support in their choices. It’s their body and face. Have at it OP.

Drink lots of water
Stay out of the sun
Eat healthily

All the rest is just companies feeding your insecurities

I don't even wear make up, and just wash with water. People keep saying how young I look. I think Botox actually makes people look older in a weirdly creepy way

The massive Boots where I live has an entire ground floor taken up by make up, skin care, hair care, perfume, body care, tanning stuff and all the rest of it. If all that stuff worked then 50 year old women would be walking round lookiing 20. I have always taken care of myself and looked after my skin but honestly there is not much else you can do. I don't know what difference it has made, I would have had to only do one side of my face as a long term experiment to see if the cared for side aged more slowly!

Well maybe those posters don't think that botox falls within the definition of "beauty"? Free world and MN is an opinionated place.

That said, which caffeine eye cream? I don't particularly like my eye bags....

Well a second job may yet have to be found, but it would be to pay for the kids Christmas. Treats for me are off the table, thanks divorce!

I understand. It’s tough.
You can get some strong creams, which people use for acne, which are relatively cheap.
i got my first aesthetic treatment at 59 - my guess is creams would make a difference for you, as you are still young.

Pennyfan · 27/06/2026 22:08

I use Cerave vit c and sunscreen then Toleriane eye cream and Avene night cream with Retinal. I can’t use tretinoin as it is a huge irritant but have had great results with these. Have never used injectables.

Well that’s the thing, we don’t really know the effects do we? But hey, it’s a nice and fun thing to do, to treat yourself and slather your skin in lovely smelling potions, and spend time on self care and feel good about yourself.

The people on here sneering - it’s ever so dull.

@FloodlightsOnTheSquare Us older not so bothered about wrinkles twits ( i can afford a shed load of proper plastic surgery if i so chose) have this bizarre opinion that there is nothing wrong with the aging process and the pursuit of eternal youthful appearance is a hiding to nothing.

besides which your post appeared on trending, i am at home, cannot be arsed to go out as too hot, and so for a change perused trending whilst supping a glass of wine.

sorry love you do you, am not that bothered TBH

Pennyfan · 27/06/2026 22:11

Ps, the receptionist at work said to me the other day I was looking great and had I been to a spa or something! I’m sure she was hinting I’d had something done-but honestly the Vit c serum is great. I’m almost 64.

Collagen

A complete scam as skincare. Any reputable pharmacist or doctor will tell you this, the science behind it is non-existent.

When I was younger I had terrible pigmentation on my face. I was referred to a dermatologist and he prescribed me Tretinoin. This is a prescription only strength skin product, so you can’t get it in Boots. At the time he told me it was used in the U.S. for wrinkles and it was the only cream which actually worked. My face peeled and it got rid of the pigmentation.
