Help! Am 49, 5ft2, size 14-16 apple with flabby upper arms, massive belly, cankles and varicose veins. A real catch!
It is my daughter’s 18th when we are on holiday and we are doing a walking fashion tour of Milan to celebrate!
I need a chic comfortable outfit! Dresses are either unflattering or if I try to go for loose just seem so voluminous- nothing seems to just skim. Co ords seem to make me look manly!
please help find an upper arm covering, leg covering cool understated chic outfit!!!

I like it too.

I think the cream works with gold jewellery as it the warmer tone suits cream.

I went off gold for years but I am feeling the love again in the last year or so. Silver is just looking a bit cold - though my engagement and wedding ring are both in paltinum.

I think you are right about gold going better with cream. I prefer the dress in navy though as it would suit my colouring better.

BrushClean · 25/06/2026 14:05

Finery do cotton petite dresses too.

That's interesting as, while I would not dress according to my "colours," I guess that maybe you suit cooler tones?

Yes. Warm tones really don't suit me. They make me look sallow and ill.

Yellow definitely does that to quite a lot of people imo.

I only wear gold as silver doesn’t suit me 🤷‍♀️

Me too

RampantIvy · 25/06/2026 15:48

Apologies @Fairtatas for derailing the thread. I hope you find a suitable outfit that makes you feel fabulous.

Chocolateistheanswer2026 · 25/06/2026 21:29

Scamp and Dude dresses are surprisngly flattering. With elastic only at the back, they skim the waist and hips really well. They often have 50% off on them.

OneLimePombear · 25/06/2026 22:25

I’d go for culottes or cropped palazzo pants in a petite range and a top that doesn’t need to be tucked in or a white or striped shirt loosely tucked in.

EleanorMc67 · 26/06/2026 01:25

This, in navy, is the most stylish option on the thread so far, if worn with smart, contemporary footwear & accessories etc. At least it seems to be in the photo shown - shame there's no pic on a model.

EleanorMc67 · 26/06/2026 02:32

@Fairtatas - what is your colouring? What colours do you like wearing/suit you best? Do you like patterns (floral/stripes/graphics etc) or plain? And is your preference for a dress rather than separates?

EleanorMc67 · 26/06/2026 02:44

Oh - & do you have a budget? Also, have you already got some great-looking but super-comfy sandals??

Cos can be astonishingly bad for not showing model photos. I am waiting for a skirt to be delivered; it could be a knee-length, maxi or midi, I have no way of knowing! Just a photo of a skirt shape. Am praying for midi, wish me luck…

PetulaDark · 26/06/2026 13:32

I’d go for wide legged linen trousers with a pleat front - really flattering for a tummy - vest top tucked in and a shortsleeved linen or cotton shirt over the top, unbuttoned. Flat sandals, jewellery, nice sunglasses, if you have long hair put it up
in a claw clip

Take a look at this website
www.milanostyle.com it's got such good information on visiting Milan and what to wear to be comfortable and stylish.

I also like the Uniqlo dress!

EleanorMc67 · 29/06/2026 02:53

RampantIvy · 25/06/2026 11:07

I really like that Uniqlo dress.

I wonder why mumsnet is obsessed with gold jewellery though.

I never wear gold as it just doesn't suit me.

Edited

Gold is, I suppose, seen as more "in" & has been for a while. But I wear a mix of gold & silver - often together as I really like it. I also have some pieces of jewellery that are silver but have gold-plated details - such as this ring & earrings from Sally Wilcox, where only the inside of the flowers is gilded.

Nice shape - but oddly described as burgundy when it looks dark brown to me ...??

mumofthemonsters808 · 29/06/2026 08:48

Your main concern needs to be your foot wear Milan has lots of cobbled streets and dressing for the intense heat, you need to be in a light fabric. We”ve just returned and I have never in my life seen so many stylish elegant people. The elderly men certainly don’t dress like they do around here, even they were cool and trendy.I looked a hot mess, hair tied back, sweat was pumping out of me, my feet were throbbing, my face was bright red I just hid behind my sunglasses. You will have a great time regardless of what you wear. You will not embarrass anyone amongst the beautiful trendy people are the normal looking tourists.Enjoy.

PetiteParakeet · 29/06/2026 09:16

No specific clothes suggestions but just wanted to say that a nice wide brimmed sun hat and sunglasses can give even a bog standard outfit chic holiday vibes.

I did thanks! It was my favourite midi length! All is forgiven, Cos.
