I should start by saying that I am one of those people.

I was in my local (affluent for context if that makes a difference) and as always I was looking out for people who looked good so I could steal some ideas. There were none!! Everyone looked a right state - I also appreciate that many people don’t care, but some do and, like me, need help. So I started thinking about some rules - add or disagree, but I think most people need help! Especially need more ‘do.., ‘ tips.

  1. No crop trousers!
  2. Nearly everyone needs a better bra.
  3. Check your back view in the mirror- many people had visible pants.
  4. If you’ve got bigger boobs and a bit of a tum cropped trousers and a t-shirt that isn’t tucked in is very unflattering.
  5. longer summer dresses that I keep reading on here are dated look nicer than many other options.

I love cropped trousers, especially if they have turn ups.
Yes I need a better bra but getting measured these days is difficult. When I went to a posh bra shop they said I needed an underwire, even though I said I didn’t wear them, then charged me a fortune for two bras I don’t wear!
Im a recent convert to summer dresses, I look better dressed without trying! I’m just not a fan of the summer dresses and trainers thing, paint your toe nails and wear some nice slip ons or sandals.

Nobody needs to see my toes, painted or not 🤣

GreatOffWhiteFalcon · 21/06/2026 08:56

It's not 'Brits' in general, many of them look fabulous in the summer. But I know what you mean about the importance of well fitting bras and invisible pants. Cropped trousers I disagree with you about; loosish cropped trousers which are tailored under the knee suit me really well. It's all about dressing to suit your body shape.

AbsoluteHoot · 21/06/2026 08:57

I’m just glad that the dreary prairie dresses we were all so fond of wearing with white trainers 5 years ago seem finally to have died a death.

Myblueclematis · 21/06/2026 08:57

I probably make a couple of clothing faux pas according to the OP but I do have a decent bra as I had a professional fitting, so if nothing else, at least my boobs look good.

keepswimming38 · 21/06/2026 08:57

You know what doesn’t look good in the summer heat. A sneery woman hating on other women.

You could ask MN to change the title. If you want some style and advice for dos and don'ts, fair enough. However, as I said, your thread title comes across as something else.
You could contact MNHQ.

I have asked them to change the title. It was meant to be lighthearted and I don’t think it needed a pile on distracting from the aim of the thread - useful tips for those who want them.

I don't think this is a nice post ! U can get ideas how to dress by following good influencers that care about what their wearing !
Most people tend to wear less but I feel like dressing and covering up to keep skin safe and breathable fabric makes u look more cool so you don't look so hot and bothered if that makes sense !
But I love to see young people dressing how they please youth is on their side !
As u get older it looks better to not look hot and bothered lol 😁

SourdoughSally · 21/06/2026 08:58

Natural fibres, always.
Plain colours rather than patterns.
Nothing really clingy.
Big sunglasses.
Good quality sandals.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 21/06/2026 08:59

The biggest difficulties to dressing well are body shape and natural fibres. I see many gorgeous looking slim women in my area (Wimbledon) because well cut, decent fabric clothes tend to be designed for their shape.

That's fair enough, although I think you can understand why there's been a strong reaction.

MartinAston · 21/06/2026 08:59

Tbh I don't really give a shit how I look when it's 30 plus degrees. All I care about is relative comfort. But you do you.

Justanopinionnothingmore · 21/06/2026 09:00

I don't look good in any weather so 🤷‍♀️

Maybe it's true then. 🤣🤣🤣

IsoldeWagner · 21/06/2026 09:01

I disagree with all the advice about plain colours only. Many patterns are interesting and stylish. It depends what they are and how you wear them.

Menotmummedad · 21/06/2026 09:01

Perhaps a lot of people dress to please themselves rather than being concerned about what others think

Why all the snarky replies?
OP is asking for some advice for dressing in unusually hot British weather, her opinion is people in UK (including herself) don’t look well dressed. She doesn’t personally like crop trousers and tee shirts.
I was hoping to read some constructive and helpful suggestions from style and beauty contributors.

Unfortunately, it was in Active so you’ve got the AIBU rent a gob commenting.

Op I wouldn’t say I’m super stylish but in this hot weather for casual/ going to the supermarket I wear a cotton dress and sandals.

If hanging around the house I’ll wear shorts and a tee or a vest. All in cotton.

ETA I don’t have style rules but I won’t wear spaghetti strap tops or dresses, I won’t wear linen, I only wear flip flops at the beach or pool, I’ll wear a chunkier sandals if I’m wearing shorts but a more strappy type sandal if wearing a dress or skirt and vest also I tend not to wear black or jeans.

AlwaysExtraHot · 21/06/2026 09:04

If I’m not in a long dress with sleeves, I’m usually to be found in relaxed-fit blue or navy trousers in a nice crisp cotton like seersucker, a cotton bodysuit (yes, like the 90s never died) and a light loose shirt open over the top, in a stripe, or pale blue. White trainers, although not massively chunky ones, or flat chunky sandals in brown or tan. Or sometimes Birkenstocks.
Ive never found a pair of shorts that I don’t look like a dork in, and I don’t like the faff of sunscreen so I tend to cover up arms and shoulders.

AlwaysExtraHot · 21/06/2026 09:05

mynameiscalypso · 21/06/2026 08:54

I think one of the mistakes that people (men and women) make is thinking that it’s cooler to wear less clothes - by which I mean, tiny vest tops and shorts type things. There were a lot of bums on show in London yesterday. I feel myself flinching when I see all the skin that’s exposed to the sun and it seems so much hotter, and riskier, than something loose and more covered up.

Edited

Couldn’t agree more.

LadyDancesALot · 21/06/2026 09:06

I agree that 80% of people look better covered up.

Hot weather= some shockers that are best left unseen.

I hate men in shorts unless at the beach or something super casual.
They don't keep anyone any cooler than longer loose trousers.

Lomonald · 21/06/2026 09:06

Sandysandybeaches · 21/06/2026 08:45

I wasn’t looking at the men, I don’t get inspiration from them. I don’t read fashion mags / instagram, what I like doing is noticing people who looked good, thinking about why that is and getting some tips. It’s an affluent town, normally lots of inspiration - but yesterday I was surprised to see none, having puzzled over what to wear myself and thought some do’s and don’t s would be useful.

If nobody inspired you why don't you buy clothes you like and wear them,
i imagine those "people " did the same.

you have quite strong opinions for
someone who doesn't know what to wear.

But that wasn’t what she said was it? She didn’t focus on the fact she doesn’t like how she looks

she used it to have a go at everyone which is bitchy at best

4Lightz · 21/06/2026 09:10

Crop trousers are very much in fashion but if you don’t like them you can opt out, it isn’t compulsory to follow fashion. And if you like long dresses you should wear those even if it isn’t currently in fashion.

I think the problem may be your mindset rather than your style. Most people don’t look a state, they just have a different sense of style to you. They probably think they look nice.

I tend to do the same as you though in the sense that I enjoy looking at people to steal style ideas. Recently I bought a pair of sparkly jeans after seeing a young girl look amazing in hers. She was probably on her way to a Harry Styles concert but I’m just going to wear mine around the house. Life is too short to spend it not sparkling!

ViciousCurrentBun · 21/06/2026 09:12

One issue with clothes generally is not enough stuff is made of cotton these days and lots of man made fabric is sweaty and clingy. But cotton is pricey. I own some cotton dresses a fifties style one is my current favourite, bought in a charity shop for a fiver, it would be £120 new.

@Notmycircusnotmyotter Wimbledon will have a much higher demographic of people in high income brackets. I live in an ex mining are and there are huge bits that are very deprived. People will also be slimmer overall as a richer area.

People overall make huge mistakes with patterns and bad underwear regardless of weather. I miss the days when I could get away with no bra.

I own two linen dresses I bought in Italy, quite loose fitting with pockets, on the knee length and perfect for this weather.

I like your attitude! No, we don't all have to be in navy linen and it's enjoyable to have a bit of fun with clothes.
Enjoy your sparkly jeans!

Speak for yourself, my family and I look great.

Melarus · 21/06/2026 09:13

"Light-hearted"? It read more like, "I see you in your cropped trousers and skanky bra, and you look pretty shit"

Maybe focus less on how others look, and more on yourself, for maximum happiness.
