Is this dress too white for a wedding?

That one - halter neck with full skirt - is a much more appropriate shape for a wedding than the tight bodycon one, imo.

I agree. I know it's still White but... I just think it's a gorgeous dress for a wedding, I'd seen it before & loved it then! (Wish I had the shoulders/arms for it)

Too sexy, too fitted, too long, too bride/bridesmaid-upstagey. White’s only a fraction of the issue. Just wear a nice day dress like a normal wedding guest.

I agree with this

AltitudeCheck · 09/06/2026 17:32

I think the floor length, falling down shoulder strap and tight fit, makes it look like it is trying to be very sexy which isn't really the right look for a wedding. It's a beautiful dress but more way better suited to a glamorous evening do than a UK wedding.

Dragonplant · 09/06/2026 17:45

I agree with pps if the dress was looser with a midi length the pattern would be fine, but it’s the combination of skin tight with full length, and barely there straps along with the white base that makes it all too much

On reflection, I don't think I would wear something that tight and slinky for a wedding. I think it's inappropriate. But then, I'm a stickler for etiquette. I have seen a lot of these wedding-guest threads on Reddit and lots of people seem to wear tight, sexy, strappy dresses in colours like red and black to weddings these days, so I'm possibly out of step. I think overtly sexy clothing is more acceptable everywhere these days than when I was a young woman in the Nineties.

A young lady in her 20s told me recently that if you wear red to a wedding it means you’ve slept with the groom. I had never heard that one before and I have almost certainly worn red to weddings before.

@NameChangeMay2026 It’s people who are influenced by people in the USA. What young people really really don’t like is old gimmers who won’t attempt the dress code! DD is getting married and she knows her friends! They will do the black tie - nothing too fabulous! But we have a couple of friends who have been invited but I suspect can’t be arsed. Seating arrangements will sideline them!

Yes, punish them by making them eat dinner at the side of the room. Dreadful people wearing normal wedding clothes to a wedding and ruining the precious photographs. Terrible behaviour.

How are you not embarrassed for yourself and your daughter by such an attitude?

PinkTonic · 09/06/2026 18:29

As far as I’m concerned the ‘too white’ malarkey applied to a floral dress is a load of bollocks, but there’s so much wrong with that dress for a wedding guest it’s difficult to know where to begin. Just no, it looks like a tacky bridesmaids dress.

Calliopespa · 09/06/2026 20:37

That design looks absolutely uncomfortable and ungainly.

Goditsmemargaret · 09/06/2026 20:58

I have a shorter version of this dress and it's very flattering. Just get a different colour.

Babymonkey24 · 09/06/2026 22:53

Not sure how it's too white when it's 50% blue!

Flyingcarpetintraining · Yesterday 00:12

I do appreciate everyone’s comments, so thank you. Some were more tactfully written than others 😂

I’ve consigned this one to the returns pile (now I just need to make sure I actually return it as I’m unlikely to ever have occasion to wear it!)

The bride is going to look absolutely fantastic in whatever she wears, so there’s no danger of me upstaging her, even if I turned up in an actual wedding dress! She is a beautiful person, inside and out.

I want something that makes me feel nice but that is also comfortable and is widely considered appropriate.

I really like the halter-neck dress that someone linked, so will order that to try on (thank you!)

Flyingcarpetintraining Oh that was me. Come back & let us know if it's suitable!

It's a shame about the other one as it's pretty, maybe for a posh day at the races or something?
