Pockets in dresses?

Pockets in dresses - why? They tend to be made into the seams directly in line with the hips, accentuating unnecessarily. What are people putting in there anyway? A tissue? Loose change?

Agreed, really ruin the line of dresses and skirts that are supposed to be fitted on the hips.

I like them usually in trousers and full skirts,
depending on the material

Nobody is saying it’s the end of the world but lots of people with larger hips and small waists don’t want their hips to look even bigger. I am one of these people and I avoid dresses with pockets for this reason. Also people who can carry a multitude of items in their pockets must be buying different dresses to me. I’ve found them too small to be useful even if they didn’t make my hips look huge. I do buy petite clothes if that makes a difference? Side pockets put me off trousers as well for the same reason. We are all different shapes and sizes and pockets in dresses don’t suit every body shape.

Agree. And it's not like I could 'just buy men's clothing' either. Because it's completely the wrong shape and proportions for me.

I’m 5ft 1 as well, definitely not an option for me either! 😂

I have a front door that shuts you out if you're not careful. Only once did DP put out the bin in his boxers. Smile

I have the key on me at all times and I am not carrying a bag if I'm just popping stuff in the wheely bin.

My door does this. I have been known to pop out with the key tucked into my bra.

I wouldn't buy a dress (or anything) without pockets. Even my pjs have pockets.

I don't carry a bag all the time so keys, tissues, phone, dog biscuits, hair slides, shopping list, credit card - not all at once.

Love this!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 04/06/2026 06:51

I love pockets. Lipstick and hands normally go in mine. If anyone compliments me on a dress with pockets it’s the second thing I mention about it.

ThanksItHasPockets · 04/06/2026 06:59

I bloody love a pocket. I’ve noticed that they are getting bigger and more practical and I find myself carrying a bag much less often. It’s fab.

With some exceptions (very fine fabrics like chiffons or silks, and anything cut on the bias) well-made pockets shouldn’t add bulk. If they do then I’d suggest sizing up as the skirt is probably a little on the small side. Pocket bags need to be pressed carefully after laundering.

Rubbish! The only dresses I buy are floaty, fit and flare type dresses so they aren’t sitting on the hips anyway! It wouldn’t make a difference if I sized up, in fact the dress I just bought (without knowing it had pockets) is going back because it’s actually too big.
We all have different body shapes and you need to accept that there are some body shapes that just don’t suit dresses with pockets. You might love them and that’s perfectly fine but it’s equally fine for others to prefer dresses without pockets.

Bristolandlazy · 04/06/2026 14:25

My hands, my phone.

Hello. I'm not quite sure what you got from my post to justify quite such a vehement response. I don't have an opinion on your body shape and of course you have preferences for your own clothing. I am not attempting to impose mandatory pockets on anyone.

I do hold a wider view that most clothes (including some which are very expensive) are often very poorly constructed. Pockets can often expose this, and leaving them out can hide a multitude of dressmaking sins. If pockets on a fit-and-flare dress ruin the line then the likelihood is that it's due to a poorly-drafted pattern, a poorly constructed garment, or a combination of the two. Regardless of whether it's your preference to have pockets or not, we should be able to expect that our clothes will be reasonably well-made.

lollylo · 04/06/2026 16:25

Love them. Cos and Uniqlo were the first to realised how many women wanted some bloody pockets if wearing a dress. Ditto pickets in my pyjamas. You can put your phone in (I don’t want to carry your bag round at work) and now my reading glasses

DeeNiall · 04/06/2026 16:26

Sleeves and pockets add to costs, as do darts and buttons. Far easier and cheaper to construct boxy plain clothes with elasticated waistbands.

An online company called Wolfairy manufactures most of their dresses with pockets - apparently because they've realised how popular this is. (I don't think they do smaller sizes, however - I think they start at UK size 14.)

Onbdy · 04/06/2026 18:23

@ThanksItHasPockets
I was just disagreeing with the comment about sizing. Randomly I saw a dress with pockets come up on social media and I was thinking that might be the style you had in mind when making your comment. I’ve never tried a dress like that on because I can tell from looking at it that it wouldn’t be flattering based on the style. The ones I’ve tried (or accidentally bought) sit really awkwardly on my hips. I totally agree with you about quality! I don’t tend to buy expensive clothes so being poorly made this could be a factor too.

Just when I think Mumsnet can no longer shock me, a thread like this emerges.

I honestly thought ALL women prefer dresses with pockets. I wear dresses a lot and would never consider buying one without pockets! Pockets are essential. I have one or two hand-me-down dresses from my sister that I like the look of but hate to wear because no pockets. This thread is mind-blowing!

Substance · 04/06/2026 18:50

LividSun · 03/06/2026 16:07

OF COURSE pockets are a feminist issue.

Literally nobody is making men garments they can't use practically, and men are not on the whole worrying themselves with whether their pockets make their hips look wide.

Once tried to buy matching Christmas pyjamas for me and my kid from M&S. The boys' and mens' pyjamas had pockets. The women's (same price) did not. I bought the men's and complained.

Clothes designed for literal baby boys have pockets in them when girls' and women's don't. What tf is a baby putting in his pockets while I'm expected to lug a bag round for phones and keys? Nope.

Agree with this.

DeeNiall · 04/06/2026 18:50

@Substance , you could you add inseam or patch pockets.
I just won't wear skirts and dresses without pockets.

Seriously this shocks you? 🤷‍♀️😂
That would be like being shocked because some people prefer trousers to dresses or vice versa. Personally I am fine with people liking dresses with pockets, I can see the benefits. I just don’t like them because they don’t suit me so I would groan if I saw a lovely dress and then noticed that it had pockets.
This is not just directed at your comment but I’m genuinely baffled by the number of posters on here who are outraged because people have different preferences to them or who make blanket statements about everyone liking certain things, Are there genuinely people who think like this in real life? The world would be a very boring place if we all liked the same things and had the same beliefs.

I wish more women's clothing had pockets!

This. In spades. I'm starting to hate clothes without pockets

Here to talk about not being a feminist rather than pockets.
Oh dear.

Trying to police how someone contributes to an internet forum.

Oh dear.

Eggybreadwithnuts · 04/06/2026 23:20

I hate them

BobbieTables · 04/06/2026 23:25

I won't buy a dress without pockets. Are you really carrying a bag around with you everywhere? Even in the house? Where does your phone go? What about if you eat something and have a wrapper to put in the bin later? Where do your hands go?
I can't fathom not wanting pockets. My favourite item of clothing is a coat with pockets big enough for a novel one side and over ear headphones on the other.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/06/2026 00:02

I bought a couple of dresses yesterday - chose ones with pockets because they’re more practical. And they had flare rather than fitted skirts so they don’t cause a hip bulge. There were plenty of other dresses without pockets for those that don’t want them.🤷‍♀️

SquirrelGG · 05/06/2026 02:31

I don't care if it ruins the line (not that I've ever noticed it has), I prefer a dress with pockets - even if I put nothing more than my hands in them.

I'm not outraged. I'm shocked and stunned.
