Pockets in dresses?

Pockets in dresses - why? They tend to be made into the seams directly in line with the hips, accentuating unnecessarily. What are people putting in there anyway? A tissue? Loose change?

I don't know anyone who wears pockets and stuffs them with things.

WoahThreeAces · 02/06/2026 20:53

I mainly put my hands in them. I don't know what to do with my hands when i don't have pockets

I think this is what annoys me about the whole ‘pocket’ thing.

It doesn’t actually bother me either way whethee dresses have pockets or not but I find the whole #pocketequality and ‘this is where we keep our seditious pamphlets’ type talk quite childish and regressive, not feminist - but I think we’ve estbished that I’m probably not a feminist.

I often have to use crutches to walk. Even cross body bags are difficult because they clang against the crutch as I move.

The seditious pamphlets just a way to make myself feel better about a practical solution to disability. Handbags are inconvenient.

I will only buy (and wear) dresses with pockets. I have small children and I do not always want to be lugging a bag around. Need to be able to put e.g. phone away super fast in case a child needs help/about to do something stupid. Keys in one pocket, phone in to other. Drives me made that you cant search for dresses with pockets online as a standard filter!

I make my own dresses so they all have pockets. I don"t always carry a bag with me and always need to carry at least a tissue. I don't care if it adds bulk to my hips as I have very narrow hips.

I make my own dresses so they don’t have pockets. I’ve been known to take them out of bought dresses, along with linings.

Don’t get me started on companies that put polyester linings in cotton dresses….

Screamingabdabz · 02/06/2026 21:20

I’m for pockets - I love putting my hands in them and swishing around. Being able to put in a phone/key/tissue in when you’re just popping out for a quick trip is very freeing.

Although I did buy a lovely white stuff dress last week where the pockets really added bulk and looked crap. I returned it.

DeeNiall · 02/06/2026 21:21

I have a front door that shuts you out if you're not careful. Only once did DP put out the bin in his boxers. Smile

I have the key on me at all times and I am not carrying a bag if I'm just popping stuff in the wheely bin.

DataColour · 02/06/2026 22:00

I walk around my work building a lot so pockets are definitely needed. I put my phone, ear buds, hairbands/clips etc in my pockets. Nobody carries bags around at my workplace unless they are arriving at work or leaving. I don't care about adding bulk to my hips as they are narrow compared to my waist (apple shaped), it actually is more flattering having pockets.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 02/06/2026 22:03

I bloody love a pocket. No idea why 🤷🏻‍♀️

InconsequentialFerret · 02/06/2026 22:04

Who the fuck wants to trundle about with a bag all the time? I can't think of anything more annoying. I've a couple of things that don't have pockets, and end up having to stick my car keys down my bra for somewhere to keep them which is a pain in the neck.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 02/06/2026 22:20

I am a fan of pockets, especially those that are of a good size (i.e. hold more than a tissue). If they can hold my phone, then that's even better! I am not too bothered about what I look like, and I have wide "childbearing hips", so accentuating them doesn't worry me!

DeeNiall · 02/06/2026 22:30

Worse than no pockets are false pockets. Useless and bulky.

Shallow pockets - ones that mean things fall out if you sit down - are also a bugbear.

MountainofWashing · 02/06/2026 22:34

Inhaler, tissue, sometimes a key
What's not to like?

thebustonowhere · 02/06/2026 22:35

I agree! I hate pockets !

DeeNiall · 02/06/2026 22:40

The pocket threads are always the same. Why start a new one?
Can you imagine men debating if their clothes should have pockets?

rockstarshoes · 02/06/2026 23:03

Team pockets!
I mean I have hips I don’t really care if they look a little bit wider than they actually are if it gives me the freedom to have my keys or a phone or my hands in my pockets!

Branster · 02/06/2026 23:04

I have been known to add pockets to some dresses. I even have a template I made for the ideal size I need.
I can’t envisage the making hips look wider issue some PPs mentioned.
I will say though that pockets of the size I like only work with dresses that have a lot of fabric do the overall drape and shape of the dress is maintained and the pockets are concealed.

KnickerlessParsons · 02/06/2026 23:06

i keep my eye drops for my dry eyes in my pockets.
pockets in dresses and the fashion of wearing trainers with dresses have revolutionised my wardrobe!

Ophir · 02/06/2026 23:06

I don’t get it either, @Tel12 🤷🏼‍♀️

JustGiveMeReason · 02/06/2026 23:38

I love a dress with pockets but don't understand the statement about them being "directly in line with your hips" or "accentuating the hips".

Apart from the type of dress where they are on the front of the dress, all pockets I've had (that are in the seams) are quite a lot lower than my hips. They are always at the top of my legs - I guess you'd say on the outside of my thighs. Several inches from my hips.

And saying to each other they don't like the bulk and that they prefer hoiking bags around.

CoffeeAndHobnobs · 02/06/2026 23:42

Pockets are great, I don't like clothes without them, as travel light.

EconomyClassRockstar · 02/06/2026 23:46

I love dresses and skirts with pockets! I don't put anything in them except for my hands (very occasionally my car key) but I love being able to swish around, hands in pockets, hair a-flying in the wind.

WearyAuldWumman · 02/06/2026 23:49

AntiHop · 02/06/2026 18:51

I only ever buy clothes with pockets. Safer and more convenient than a bag.

I buy clothes with pockets whenever possible.

Here to talk about not being a feminist rather than pockets.
Oh dear.
