Pockets in dresses?

Pockets in dresses - why? They tend to be made into the seams directly in line with the hips, accentuating unnecessarily. What are people putting in there anyway? A tissue? Loose change?

I much prefer pockets in dresses. I take a rucksack to work so like to put my phone in my pocket when walking around the building.

Same here - I put my reading glasses and security pass in my pockets, along with my phone and a tissue, so I have things I need without toting my whole work bag around. And outside work I don’t always want to carry a bag, so I can take my necessary things in pockets and be bag-free. I also love them for putting my hands in!

This might all work for me because I’m a size 16 and don’t wear anything figure hugging, so I have enough fabric in my dresses to be able to fill the pockets without spoiling the line or anything.

liquoriceallsortfamily · 03/06/2026 10:22

Absolutely love a dress with pockets.

Nottinghillrose · 03/06/2026 10:25

I’ve just bought a pair of trousers in the M&S sale. Fit beautifully and I’m delighted with my bargain but the pockets sit on my hip bones and gape. They are also too shallow to fit a phone or keys so I’m going to sew them up to give a smoother.
a pocket is only good if it’s deep enough and doesn’t spoil the line of the garment.

Bjorkdidit · 03/06/2026 10:28

Where are people finding clothes with pockets that are actually useful? I have enough trouble finding clothes that I like and fit anywhere near properly without adding another layer of complication that further reduces me finding clothes to buy.

Anyway, my 'pockets in clothes bugbear' is reserved for t shirts that have a single tiny pointless pocket on them. Make it look stupid and completely useless, I suspect that no-one has ever put anything in those pockets.

henlake7 · 03/06/2026 11:07

No pockets? But where are you supposed to put your hands when waiting for the green man at the crossing!?😆
Mine are mainly for hands as I often prefer to mooch when I walk and 'hands in pockets' is integral to this lifestyle.

I find everything instantly 50% better to wear once it has pockets. I think people who worry about bad placement or ruining the lines of things are probably buying things much slinkier and more fitted then I would wear!
Im more of a 'can I twirl in it?' kind of dresser and pockets usually help provide extra swishiness.😃

A pen? 😂it is the same with fake buttons, just pointless. If the tshirt fits well I'd have to ignore fake pocket. It is difficult to find clothes!
I do wish they'd make deeper pockets too.

DeeNiall · 03/06/2026 11:34

@Bjorkdidit , most of the clothes I have have pockets. The ones that don't are tops and leggings. With jeans I put my hand in the pockets to check that they are deep enough.

I won't wear clothes without pockets so I don't buy them. I tend to put my hands in my pockets too and I like clothes that skim or swish.

Chest pockets on tops like t-shirts make the top bulkier under a jumper or cardigan. They are just for decoration.

Lopella · 03/06/2026 12:12

I absolutely detest carrying a bag so only buy clothes with pockets for my phone, keys and wallet.

MyGirlJ · 03/06/2026 15:55

lip balm, bank card, car key

LividSun · 03/06/2026 16:07

OF COURSE pockets are a feminist issue.

Literally nobody is making men garments they can't use practically, and men are not on the whole worrying themselves with whether their pockets make their hips look wide.

Once tried to buy matching Christmas pyjamas for me and my kid from M&S. The boys' and mens' pyjamas had pockets. The women's (same price) did not. I bought the men's and complained.

Clothes designed for literal baby boys have pockets in them when girls' and women's don't. What tf is a baby putting in his pockets while I'm expected to lug a bag round for phones and keys? Nope.

I'll just leave this here for you all to enjoy - comparison of pocket sizes of mens jeans and womens jeans

Women's Pockets are Inferior.

If you wear women's clothes, you already know this. But now we've got the data to show it.

OttersOnAPlane · 03/06/2026 16:14

Why the hell was the analysis of mens and womens pocket sizes in jeans taken down?? It's in interesting piece of statistical information.

BelleEpoque27 · 03/06/2026 16:14

I almost never buy dresses without pockets nowadays. They're so useful - phone and work pass to walk around the office, phone and keys for the school run. Why would I want to carry a bag when I don't have to.

However, some dresses do not suit pockets - you need a bit of swish in the skirt, they don't tend to work on anything tight on the hips. I tried on a jersey dress in White Stuff the other day which really didn't work with the pockets - they stuck out and made my hips look weird. But that's a poorly designed pocket, usually you can't even see them.

What I now want is a slim inside pocket on my coat, like my partner has on his jackets.

Firesidechatter · 03/06/2026 16:19

Me and em cut their pockets on their dresses and trousers in a way they don’t ruin the line.

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 03/06/2026 16:20

NewLifter · 02/06/2026 18:22

I think they look awful in dresses, they make your hips look bigger 😅 I avoid dresses with pockets

Same with formal trousers that skim the hips

Oh no. Not my hips looking bigger! End of the world!

InfiniteTeas · 03/06/2026 16:24

JustGiveMeReason · 02/06/2026 23:38

I love a dress with pockets but don't understand the statement about them being "directly in line with your hips" or "accentuating the hips".

Apart from the type of dress where they are on the front of the dress, all pockets I've had (that are in the seams) are quite a lot lower than my hips. They are always at the top of my legs - I guess you'd say on the outside of my thighs. Several inches from my hips.

I’m standing with my hand in a skirt pocket right now, and, yes, fingertips are halfway down my thigh! Even the top of the pocket is lower than my hip.

trueredstart · 03/06/2026 16:29

Imagine my delight when I realised my wedding dress had pockets!

Note to all clothing designers: If I try on a dress and think it's merely okay, but I discover it has pockets then I am buying that dress no questions asked.

oooh, you’d love my Seasalt coats - they have a special inside pocket with a Velcro closure just made for a phone, among their other fine features.

Pockets in dresses?
Nincompoo · 03/06/2026 17:02

Pockets in dresses make me happy! How only if they’re big enough pockets to actually put things in!

I’ve been known to buy men’s shorts and tracksuit trousers because apparently only men need big pockets or pockets with zips on when they’re being active.

Straycats · 03/06/2026 18:35

Love love pockets, am so disappointed if any of my clothing have none, or paltry little ones. Large ones and I’m in pocket heaven.

HenriettaHenhouse · 03/06/2026 18:36

@OhGoshNotAgain Seasalt are also very good for putting pockets in dresses.

GoldenPineapple15 · 03/06/2026 18:37

My hands , my phone , hair ties , my interactive board pen ( teacher.)

They very are. Almost all my dresses (and I wear them much more frequently than trousers) are Seasalt, and with one exception they all have roomy pockets. Fatface get an honourable mention for a lovely linen mix dress this year with pockets big enough even to accommodate my too-large Samsung phone!

@Namechangeforthisdilemma1
Nobody is saying it’s the end of the world but lots of people with larger hips and small waists don’t want their hips to look even bigger. I am one of these people and I avoid dresses with pockets for this reason. Also people who can carry a multitude of items in their pockets must be buying different dresses to me. I’ve found them too small to be useful even if they didn’t make my hips look huge. I do buy petite clothes if that makes a difference? Side pockets put me off trousers as well for the same reason. We are all different shapes and sizes and pockets in dresses don’t suit every body shape.

RaininSummer · 03/06/2026 19:10

Pockets are great. I can't carry my bag around at work so pockets for tissues and maybe a pen.
