Pockets in dresses?

Pockets in dresses - why? They tend to be made into the seams directly in line with the hips, accentuating unnecessarily. What are people putting in there anyway? A tissue? Loose change?

I think they look awful in dresses, they make your hips look bigger 😅 I avoid dresses with pockets

Same with formal trousers that skim the hips

Totally agree! I accidentally bought a dress with pockets last week. I have kept it but I probably won’t wear it because of how it makes my hips look about twice their actual size!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 02/06/2026 19:19

Pockets aren’t pointless they are for putting things in. I don’t want to always carry a bag everywhere I go. I hate dresses without pockets, I end up missing calls as my phone is in my bag in the hall, I’ve got to go get a bag to just put phone, keys and poo bags when I go out with the dog. At work, I move away from my desk a lot, I want to be able to just put phone and work keys in a pocket, I’m not going to carry my whole handbag with me at all times.

ThaneOfGlamis · 02/06/2026 19:26

Surely no one wants to take a handbag out while doing the gardening or taking the bins out? As a hay fever sufferer pockets are vital! I hate anything that doesn't have pockets.

Justusethebloodyphone · 02/06/2026 19:30

I love pockets in long dresses with plenty of fabric. I’ve tried a couple of straighter dresses recently and pockets don’t work at all. They upset the line of the dress and make my hips look huge.

Just hands in pockets for me. Just feels comfortable, can’t imagine using them to put this in. Surely they’d bulge or drag the fabric down.

MsAwesomeDragon · 02/06/2026 19:30

I'd never buy a dress without pockets. I put my keys, a biro, a whiteboard pen, a couple of fidget toys, etc in mine. Because I'm a teacher and don't want to be carrying a bag around in the classroom, but also don't want to have to keep running back to my desk to get stuff.

When not at work there's often some tissues, or lip balm, maybe some ear buds, usually my keys. I don't want to always need a bag with me. Pockets are brilliant.

I'd actually like bigger pockets, so I can put my phone in one securely. I cannot fathom wanting clothing without pockets.

Some of us are less worried about “looking like we have something in our pockets” than others? I mean honestly if you can’t imagine why someone would need to be able to move around without a handbag I suspect you live in a bizarrely niche world of the limply feminine.

There's no need for the insult about being "limply feminine".

I like pockets in dresses. Most of my dresses and skirts have pockets. They are very handy for reading glasses or my office pass or a tissue. They don't replace bags as I don't think carrying keys, phone, bank cards, travel card, driving licence etc around in a dress pocket is very secure. My husband carries a shoulder bag for these-does that make him "limply feminine"?

OhThePotential · 02/06/2026 19:32

No. I like big frocks but I’m pocket averse.

In the sewing community at least it seems to have been latched onto as some kind of feminist statement, men have pockets so we must too. I don’t get it, I’m 55 and have never used a dress pocket, I don’t think that makes me unfeminist - although plenty of other things might.

I love that. She is me.

Me too!

BendingSpoons · 02/06/2026 19:36

I much prefer pockets in dresses. I take a rucksack to work so like to put my phone in my pocket when walking around the building.

HenriettaHenhouse · 02/06/2026 18:35

Oh a summer day though, taking the dog round the block or popping to the shop you can just slip what you need in the pocket. No need for a bag. No need to change into trousers.

I don’t disagree. It was the ‘niche limply feminine’ bollocks that pissed me off (and sent me swearing in a very unlimp manner).

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 02/06/2026 19:58

See I love them. Always go for a dress with pockets. Also #pocketequality

Another76543 · 02/06/2026 20:01

I have never understood the obsession of having to have pockets in dresses! On the whole, having pockets adds width at exactly the point where most women don’t want extra width (especially if you put stuff in said pockets).

However, I’ve recently bought a dress from Me & Em and noticed that they made a point of saying that their pockets are designed so they don’t add extra bulk in the wrong place.

This means that the clothes still look good but have the benefit of being able to pop your phone/hankie in if needed.

i love a dress with pockets, in fact it makes me so happy when I try on a dress for the first time and find the pockets!

I don’t garden in a dress and if I’m popping to the bins I don’t need to take my phone etc with me.

theleftsuitcase · 02/06/2026 20:12

I love pockets, rarely carry a handbag and as I’m apple-shaped adding extra width at the hips is an advantage!

I'm the sort of person who pops to the bins then notices some weeds.
40 minutes later I realise I'm gardening in my favourite/best dress and the pockets are full of bits of string, the bracelet that was rattling and annoying me and a doll's shoe I just found in the flower bed.

dudsville · 02/06/2026 20:19

I love pockets. They do need to be right though. They have to be real pockets, not shallow, flimsy things. Flat patch pockets are just for hands and cards. Sewn into the side seam pockets are really annoying, if you do stick your hands in them then your elbows are all back like you're about to take flight, and it pulls the dress tight around your back. But the delight of a well placed and properly constructed pocket, that is freedom. I have some very nice handbags, but I prefer pockets. I carry a zippered wallet with cards, lip balm, a tissue and a house key. Although I do still like handbags, I have started lately to look at how they're carried and have begun to think it looks like a safety object. It keeps one arm folded up toward the body, it's often being clutched, increasingly I see it as a self protective object.

SuitcaseAndSecrets · 02/06/2026 20:21

Im handy with the sewing machine.. taken them out of any dresses l bought with them in and sewn the seam back up.. l agree they bulge out on the hips.. l also sew up trousers with side pockets.

My keys, my phone, a tissue, a lip salve, my bank card.

I will always choose the item with pockets over the item without. Pockets are where we keep our seditious pamphlets.

I think this is what annoys me about the whole ‘pocket’ thing.

It doesn’t actually bother me either way whethee dresses have pockets or not but I find the whole #pocketequality and ‘this is where we keep our seditious pamphlets’ type talk quite childish and regressive, not feminist - but I think we’ve estbished that I’m probably not a feminist.

Only if he can’t imagine any situation where a pocket would be more useful than his hips being displayed nicely.

DiscoBeat · 02/06/2026 20:36

I love pockets! Put in them what you want to put in any pockets, including hands!

MrsLFii · 02/06/2026 20:38

I personally don’t like dresses with pockets, even with nothing in them, I think they ruin the (potential!) line of the dress, and that isn’t even mentioning what they do to the shape when they’re in use! On every other item of clothing though, pockets all the way!

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/06/2026 20:38

I make my own dresses so they all have pockets. I don"t always carry a bag with me and always need to carry at least a tissue. I don't care if it adds bulk to my hips as I have very narrow hips.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/06/2026 20:43

When I was a teacher my pockets were always full of odds and ends the children had found given to me.
