Tortephant's suggestions were from the Outnet, Net-a-Porter and one direct from Rixo. The OP's dress is from a specialised bridal brand based in Spain from a design they've been producing for at least 10 years.

You, general you, might think the former are the most hideous dresses you've ever seen but the Outnet, Net-a-Porter and Rixo aren't in business to sell "dated" dresses.

This logic doesn’t really land when you’re clearly in the minority here. Most of the thread liked the OP’s dress, and almost no one liked the Outnet/Net-a-Porter/Rixo suggestions.

So if anything, that says more about your idea of “good” than it does about what’s “dated.” Selling doesn’t automatically equal better taste, it just means it sells.

And clearly, a dress that’s been on sale for 10 years shows that it’s a classic and popular style.

Love the dress. You're the mother of the bride, you look fab and your daughter likes it. Therefore it is a perfect mother of the bride dress. I do quite like the fascinator though so I clearly know nothing 🙈

You've missed the point. Net a Porter is not selling clothes which are dated, if by "dated" you (general you) mean clothes which are not on current trend. The whole point of Net a Porter is to sell clothes on trend. Feel free to despise that if you like, or hate everything on their site but"dated" is not a synonym for "I don't like it"

I didn't say anything about "good" beyond saying I preferred 2 of the Net a Porter dresses so not sure what your point there is.

Dated is entirely subjective and context dependent.

I love Rixo but when you’re older you need to be careful with cut and colour. I didn’t like the Rixo suggestions and thought, in the contact of MOB they would look dated. In a different context - 30something hipster party with gazelles they would not. (I don’t actually like dresses with trainers but you get the point).

It's a fair point that OP has not indicated what time of day the wedding is being held. I think many of the negative posters are assuming that it is in the daytime because that has long been the practice in the UK, especially in England where until fairly recently, I believe, by law weddings had to occur before 6 pm.

If the wedding is in the evening, the dress is appropriate, bare shoulder and train included. If in the daytime, it might seem a bit out of place as black tie dressing (in the UK, I assume, and in the US as well) is traditionally for evening only. However, there is a middle ground which sometimes happens in the US, which is that even in the daytime, the wedding party, mothers included, dress in black tie and evening dresses, while guests wear attire more traditional for daytime.

Either way, it's a beautiful dress and OP looks great in it. I am, however, firmly in the no headgear camp.

Yes. IMO this would look in keeping with an evening reception but would look really odd at a middle of the day church wedding. I have no idea if the OP has mentioned venue.

I really love that Victoria Beckham dress.

The dress is gorgeous, and you look incredible!

I've never been to a wedding with that kind of vibe so can't really comment on how suitable it is for the occasion & dress code - that's one for your daughter to answer really.

They are. I used to go to a lot of officers’ mess functions where the black tie rules are draconian. Any of those dresses would have been acceptable. As @PhaedraTwo says, where else would you wear them?

I would wear a number of the floral and polka dot one to work.

OP your dress is stunning and you look fabulous in it. My mum had a similar second dress and my dad wore black tie (not even everyone shock) and she looked and more importantly I could tell she felt absolutely stunning and beautiful and that is how I wanted my mum to feel.

I do come from a culture that makes significant more effort dressing up than I have seen at most English weddings.

Wear it and have a wonderful day and night.

Far too OTT for MOB. Looks like an evening dress.

user678435 · Today 15:08

I think you look great in the dress, OP, but I suspect you'd look great in a lot of things. I don't think the train looks overly train-ish on you, it looks like they've positioned it to look more prominent on the model. I don't love the big flower on the shoulder, which I think detracts. Definitely no fascinator! I hope it's a fantastic day.

I agree on principle, but I think there are some dresses that have been hanging about for at least ten years on the Outnet. It's sort of their business model, isn't it?

Pandasarethebest · Today 17:45

You look great.

I like the fascinator but maybe more for day at the races rather than wedding.
