I’m not sure where ‘competing with the bride’ came from and my ‘lucky girl’ comment was about her ability to have the wedding in a very special venue.

there are some very mean comments from certain posters, there’s no competition or bragging in any of my posts

I do like the brown dress but no way could I afford the £2k price tag that goes with it. That’s an amount to be spent on a bridal gown.

again thank you to the posters who have been helpful with comments about head wear and the general outfit comments

I really don’t know in what universe a one shoulder dress would be deemed suitable for a grandmother. And it’s not the insult you seem to think it is as there are some very stylish older women. Can you imagine the reaction if someone walked into the office wearing that? Jaws would drop with incredulity.

I honestly have no idea what “frumpy” means any more. It seems to signify “I don’t like it”.

Edited

It wasn’t an insult — I was expressing that I disliked most of the dresses in that initial post and the fact they seemed wholly unsuitable for the occasion. I’m not sure what about this posters such as yourself are failing to grasp. Lots of older women are indeed very stylish, and I’m sure they wouldn’t be caught dead in many of those dresses at a black tie event.

geoger · Yesterday 18:12

Love the dress and I think it’s perfect for the occasion
In my culture evening gowns are the norm for close family and friends. It’s the kind of thing I’d choose to wear if I was a MOG/B

Fucking hell.

This is the style and beauty board, not AIBU. Really no need for such vile and bitchy posting. We get it, you don’t like it, and based on your idea of what consists of black tie based on your earlier post, it’s obvious you have a very different idea to most people on this thread, so just move on rather than belittling and mocking the OP.

She had an amazing figure and looks great in the dress. The only reason I can think of you constantly mocking her idea is that you’re jealous or simply bitter.

Lovely dress and you look great in it - but I still can't get my head round evening dresses for a day time wedding. Just as, I imagine, your American guests who are used to evening gowns for a wedding think day dresses equal underdressing - it's just what you're used to. Agree with losing the fascinator - they are more for day dresses than evening dresses - it's an incongruous look.

In my somewhat extensive experience of weddings in the US, black tie weddings with long dresses in the US are usually in the evening when black tie is traditionally appropriate. For daytime weddings in the US, guests usually wear daytime dressy clothing, similar to what people in the UK would wear, absent the hats and fascinators. And probably fewer floral dresses.

I like OP's dress; it would certainly be fine for a black tie wedding in the US.

Black tie evening weddings will suit evening dresses, but not daytime weddings (imo).

Gorgeous, enjoy!

bellventrico · Yesterday 22:37

Oh OP ignore the horrid comments - you'll be stunning in that dress and it sounds like the venue will be wonderful too. It's a huge event for MOB and you've hit the perfect balance - tasteful, stylish and a teensy bit sexy!

ToastSafeFromMothsAndDogs · Today 00:00

You look beautiful in that dress. Agree no fascinator.

Possibly a hat, but mixing hats and evening dress is questionable.

To be honest, when I see people in evening wear during the day, my first thought is always that they must have had quite a night of it to be on their way home like that. But if that’s the dress code, you may as well do it properly.

Bigminnie1 · Today 06:28

You look fabulous and it’s perfect for a black tie wedding.

TheThunderRolls · Today 06:48

OP, I think you look beautiful. I wouldn't wear the fascinator. The colour is gorgeous and the fit. If your DC is happy with the choice and it fits the dress code, etc then I don't think you could do better. I wish I looked this good in any clothing! Have a great wedding and congrats!

neilisbangingoutthetunes · Today 06:55

I don't understand the griping about how apparently inappropriate the black tie dress code is. Do those posters think the OP is going to relay their comments to her daughter so she can change it?

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · Today 07:19

@princesspadam Forget the mean posters, they are a bore on here these days!
Come on OP we all want your diet and exercise regime - those arms are something else - please share!!!

Girlintheframe · Today 07:28

I think the dress you have chosen is gorgeous and fits you really well.

Soonbbbqweather · Today 08:40

@princesspadam ignore all the negative and nasty comments. Your dress is perfect for a black tie wedding although you don’t wear hats or fascinators with black tie. Pair with an evening bag and sandals and gorgeous jewellery and be a super glam MOB. DD did black tie and everyone made an effort and had a fabulous time. The majority of ladies wore long dresses and said how lovely it was to be able to get dressed up.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · Today 10:07

Definitely no hat!

PS5Gamer · Today 10:09

OP you look beautiful in the dress! Most importantly your Daughter is happy too.
Personally, I don’t think you need a hat/fascinator.

Note that the OP has never indicated what time the wedding is, or even if it’s a church or civil ceremony. She’s only said it’s black tie, the groom is American, and the venue is a bit exclusive.

All the ranting and raving about black tie at daytime weddings has been projection, apparently by people looking for excuses to be offended.

Picassosdove · Today 10:12

Absolutely beautiful dress. I’m another who thinks it would be better without headwear as the dress is enough of a statement

PineappleSunrise · Today 10:15

BIossomtoes · Yesterday 17:32

Funny, I think they’re a classic and have been for as long as I can remember. I think I bought my first spotted garment when I was 17 - literally more than half a century ago - and there’s been at least one in my wardrobe ever since.

Which in no way invalidates my point. Have you held onto and continued to wear your very first polka dotted item every year throughout your life, or are you still referring to the pattern in general rather than a specific item of clothing?

They are apples and oranges when it comes to discussing the trendiness of a specific dress.

It’s obvious to anyone except apparently you that I’m talking about a series of garments and referring to the pattern. You’re just arguing for the sake of it now.

Pilates if you want good arms.

Lifting weights is also very effective. 👌

NorWouldTilly · Today 12:06

Or using a manual coffee grinder every morning …

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · Today 12:33

@NorWouldTilly @Tortephant @nonmerci99 thank you! If I do any weights or manual work I get guns like the Rock, so I do a lot of pilates but am just never going to be willowy like OP. Those arms on a woman with a grown up child - EXCEPTIONAL WORK!
