I didn't want to make the title 'What's the one thing you need to do... ' etc because obviously no-one should feel pressured to do anything!

I guess I mean what's the one (or perhaps two) things you wish to pay more attention to?

Last year I decided to be quite religious about applying sunscreen to my face daily. It has made a big difference to my skin, I can see it.

Now the one change is to cut out alcohol and really hydrate properly.

(And as a second, I need to pay more attention to my hair... styling it I think).

Sun protection, hair care and drink less. I’m horrifically bad at all 3.

Talltreesbythelake · 31/05/2026 17:06

Gua sha, I've got the stuff, watched the tutorials but haven't actually got round to it yet. I'm sure it will work wonders on my puffy face.

pepayfelix · 31/05/2026 17:13

I’m pretty religious with my SPF, and I don’t drink alcohol and have to stay well hydrated for other reasons (chronic migraines). I still look pretty haggard but perhaps if I wasn’t careful I would look like a wrinkled leather sofa.

I am pretty rubbish at remembering to go to the hygienist and my teeth always look better when I go, so I should probably make more effort there.

Create calendar reminders in your phone for every 6 months or however frequently you feel like making mumbling responses because they ask you your holiday plans whilst having a fist in your mouth.

I have the memory of a carrot and calendar reminders are my best friend.

Weight training. I know I ought to but I also know I'll be bored out of my brain.

Pepsi4Eva · 02/06/2026 13:01

Thanks all, I am very glad to read your thoughts!

Another thing I don't really do is makeup, I always wear foundation etc but I never really learned how to do makeup. I went on a 7 minute tutorial on yourube yesterday for a woman who likes a more natural look and is in her 40s and today actually followed it. It took me less than 5 minutes and I really like how I look. So that's hopefully something that will become a part of my routine. So I feel quite pleased with that.
I also moussed my hair today and dried it and it defintiely has more body to it.

Skin care I am ok, and when I use my LED mask regularly I’m happy. I don’t drink much but sleeping well helps and that’s haphazard for me despite HRT etc. I’d like to be far better at minimal make up though. I probably have the products but need to apply better!

Pepsi4Eva · 02/06/2026 14:56

One thing I have been doing for about a month- I was recently diagnosed with early stage kidney disease and told to hydrate and hydrate and I have been making a conscious effort. Today was the first time I thought I could REALLY see a difference. I actually think my skin quality looks certainly 5 years younger (possibly more). So I feel really positive about that.

I'm off to watch another youtube video about skin care. I've nevr really taken care of myself- sort of thought I did not 'deserve to' because i am much fatter than I wish to be and thought I'd get to my goal weight first. Stupid really, and self-sabotaging.

I'm feeling really encouraged today!

The dentist. I like to take care of myself in general and I do look after my teeth at home but I have such a bad phobia (caused by an incident of malpractice as a teenager) that I haven’t visited one in 20 years.

Strength training. I’d rather stick pins in my eyes than lift weights and I’m so sick of having it shoved down my throat at every turn.

I’m completely with you on weight training. Life’s too short. The thing I think would help me is yoga or Pilates, I’d like to be more supple.

Gardeningsideeffects · 02/06/2026 15:32

Do more yoga. I absolutely love it. I love spending time with Kassandra on youtube.

But I would always rather spend my exercise time doing weights workouts which I do at home. I absolutely love it and do something most mornings.

But I should do more yoga and it benefits me mind and body.

nonmerci99 · 02/06/2026 15:37

This is a budget thing more than anything but I’d love to be able to justify regular facials. They’re so wonderful!

SunnySunnyDayz · 02/06/2026 15:40

Use a device, like an led mask or microcurrent matching. I can afford it but bet I won't use it.

PrimeSeason · 02/06/2026 16:07

10k steps every day. I just don’t do it. I run a couple of times a week and do yoga class once a week but that’s it.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/06/2026 16:28

I half do this, but reformer Pilates. I go to one class a week and I feel great afterwards, and it's made a real difference to my posture and body. Ideally I would do two classes a week but it's so £. (I do always hit 10K steps and do weights every night at home though.)

LaurieFairyCake · 02/06/2026 16:54

I will have a face lift if I can afford it at 60-65

That’s probably too late. If I’d had one it would have been at about 55. You may not need one anyway - the woman in the chemist literally argued with me that I couldn’t possibly be the owner of my prescription because “You don’t look 72”. Actually I probably do without slap and up close and personal, I just don’t give old lady vibes.

TheOGCCL · 02/06/2026 17:13

Weight training for me too

Hallywally · 02/06/2026 20:47

Exercise and weight training. My life is busy but I just do not enjoy exercise. I’ve tried for years and years to keep up a routine and it always fizzles out after a few weeks/months. I’ve tried all manner of things to motivate myself and I just don’t like it.

OhThePotential · 02/06/2026 21:28

I go for physio appointments once a month at a reformer pilates studio in my nearest city and I’d love to go to their classes once or twice a week - sadly its not close enough for me to get there that often.

Matwork at home isn’t the same 🙁

PeonyPassion · 02/06/2026 21:32

Sticking to my exercise routine- Pilates, hill walking, weights and yoga. I love all the activities but keep finding that everything else gets in the way. I need to find a way to prioritise it better.

Drivingmissrangey · 07/06/2026 08:20

Retinol. Sometimes think I’m the only 40+ anywhere not using it. But I’m a bit scared by all dry peeling face stories.

Weight training once I’m able to get back to the gym (still recovering from a surgery). Annoyingly I was doing really well until I had to stop.

You’re not the only one. Retinol frightens me too.

Blossomtoes I don’t need it yet at 55. But defo at 65.

That’s the point - if you’re going to have work done have it before you “need” it so it’s not obvious. You don’t know if you’ll ever need it, nobody can predict how they’ll age.
