Would you wear a dress that makes your stomach look prominent?

You might be able to tell that I'm not used to issues around weight as I've only gained in the last 3 years thanks to peri. Before that I was thin/underweight.

Someone bought me a summer dress as a gift. I really like it but it's tight fitting and makes my stomach stick out. I look about 5 or 6 months pregnant.

My question is...would you care? Would you still wear it? Or is wearing something that makes your stomach look big just not the done thing? I'd like to wear it but I feel so self conscious. Trying to gauge opinions. I have a feeling most people wouldn't wear something that draws attention to their stomach.

As an aside, I'm working on counting calories and trying to lose weight.

Sorry to hear that, but good for you for wearing what you want to.

Spanx?

Sorry, not sure what you mean?

If I didn’t like the way it looked on my figure I wouldn’t wear it. Life is too short to feel self-conscious and uncomfortable (which I would).

Keroppi · Today 19:39

Well it depends really is it tight fitting all the way down like a clingy bodycon dress? No I wouldn't wear that if I knew I genuinely looked pregnant. Some people have distorted self images though so do you REALLY look pregnant or are you/your stomach just looking fatter than before? There's a difference

Well this is the thing. I would feel self conscious but at the same time if I knew other women weren't bothered I'd still be tempted to wear it.

No not all the way down. It's a summer halter neck dress but just rather tight around my stomach area. It does stick out a fair bit. Such a shame as I like it.

I think it really does come down to whether or not you are going to feel confident wearing it. You don’t owe it to anyone else to look a certain way (and you probably look fine in it anyway, we are all more conscious of our lumps and bumps than others are). I know myself, and I know I’d be distracted and tense and pulling at it all the time, so I wouldn’t wear it - only you know how you feel!

Itiswhysofew · Today 19:47

No, I wouldn't wear it. My tummy's covered all the time. I hate it, but feel very uncomfortable otherwise.

Pompelly · Today 19:47

Can you show us the dress? Just so we can picture the style.

I'm fat and don't shy away from fitted tops - i wouldn't wear anything really tight or clingy but sometimes having everything too loose and floaty can emphasise your shape by adding bulk to your silhouette.

Wear it at home for a bit and see how you feel in it. Do you actually like it?

mumofoneAloneandwell · Today 19:49

Could you try shapewear? Like spanx/skims?

I'm camp wear what feels good to you x

Hold in pants, Spanx is the brand name

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Today 19:51

If you don’t like it then put it on vinted/ebay and get something which is flattering. But picture of you in it first would be good.

Wooflysniff · Today 19:51

I have the same problem, I'm completely apple shaped with a big tummy, but relatively slim arms and legs. I won't wear anything that draws attention to my stomach area, although, I don't think other people look bad if they do.

If I put control underwear on like Spanx it just seems to make me look more pregnant, because my fat comes from right under my bust area. I wish I had the confidence to just rock it but I've never got over having to explain to 2 separate women that I wasn't pregnant just fat. They were far more mortified than I was.

watchingthishtread · Today 19:52

No.

Something that doesn't fit properly isn't conducive to looking or feeling good and I'm too old (and sensible) at this stage in my life to be strangling myself in shapeware to make something fit.

I don’t wear things that make me feel self-conscious.

Specialneedsnightmare · Today 20:01

Thanks for the opinions so far. I'm leaning towards trying to lose weight before wearing it. I love floral summer dresses but I think I'd be too self conscious as my stomach sticks out around the mid section.

Do you actually look 6 months pregnant or is your stomach just more pronounced than youre used to? Can you take a non identifying photo?

Mykneesareshot · Today 20:07

I would not wear it, all my weight is on my belly so I would definitely look pregnant.

thewitchisin · Today 20:10

It also depends for me what is comfortable on the day. On a bad day then dresses are all I can stand but this is normal to swollen

To be honest I don't think it's going to work unless I lose weight. It doesn't flatter me At ALL

No Op, it doesn’t flatter you and you have a good figure but not for that dress
