Would you wear a dress that makes your stomach look prominent?

You might be able to tell that I'm not used to issues around weight as I've only gained in the last 3 years thanks to peri. Before that I was thin/underweight.

Someone bought me a summer dress as a gift. I really like it but it's tight fitting and makes my stomach stick out. I look about 5 or 6 months pregnant.

My question is...would you care? Would you still wear it? Or is wearing something that makes your stomach look big just not the done thing? I'd like to wear it but I feel so self conscious. Trying to gauge opinions. I have a feeling most people wouldn't wear something that draws attention to their stomach.

As an aside, I'm working on counting calories and trying to lose weight.

There are so many gorgeous summer dresses around that are flattering, that I definitely wouldn’t wear one that would make me feel self conscious. I have recently bought this https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-shirred-waist-v-neck-cap-sleeve-midi-dress-baja-blue/p114546492 which is so flattering on my pudgy middle.

That's a lovely dress. I tend to go for knee length as I'm short, but I'd get it if I was taller!

The dress above is much more flattering and current. Those clingy dresses look quite dated.

Thanks everyone. I didn't buy it - it was a gift- so I'm unfamiliar with Amazon sizes, but I see what you all mean that maybe I just need a bigger size. I tend to buy from Next petite range as I'm short and have a small frame, I've just got this bigger belly (and boob's, but they can stay). I really appreciate all the supportive comments.

Yes I'm inclined to agree. This one was a gift but my others don't cling and I look better in them.

Ask the person who gave you if if they can return for a bigger size. As said, these Chinese made dresses tend to come up small.

Agree, it's just a bit too small for you.

Just give it back saying it didnt fit! I have IBS and my tummy bloats up and looks awful in tight clothes. Dont keep it!

watchingthishtread · 30/05/2026 18:03

It's not you, it's the dress. Don't wear it.

BillieWiper · 30/05/2026 18:09

The blue dress looks like it's a size too small. You don't have a big belly though and you have a good figure.

But I hate anything on me that draws attention to the waist as I have a very short torso, small hips. Even though I'm skinny it's not flattering.

So something a bit looser in that area I think is nearly always better unless you really are a gym fiend with a flat stomach.

I agree with previous posters. You don't look pregnant, but you are wearing the wrong size.

It's more flattering to wear clothing in a size that fits, than to squeeze yourself into the size below for the sake of being able to say you're a size x. Don't focus on the number on the label, because sizing differs from brand to brand, especially with online only retailers.

For example, not long ago I impulse bought a Shein matching coordinated set from a charity shop in one size above my normal size without trying it on. The trousers fit perfectly, but the top was miles too tight for my breasts. I wasn't giving in on having a top to go with the trousers, so I went on Vinted and bought the next size up for the top.
That looked awful too. So then I went back on vinted and bought the next size up...

I had to go up four clothing sizes for the top before I got one that fitted.

OP - just because you are short does not mean you have to wear knee length dresses. I speak as a fellow petite with a small frame. Wearing long dresses can actually make you look taller. Knee length can look a bit dated. You have a great figure and I am sure you can find something a lot nicer - and not any more expensive - than an Amazon polyester dress.

cheezncrackers · 30/05/2026 22:20

No, I wouldn't OP. I would either wear control underwear (if this was sufficient to hold my stomach in and make the dress look okay), or I'd hold onto it and wear it once I'd lost weight.

Edited to say: I've just looked at the dress. Polyester? I'd send it back. Sweaty and cheap looking. Or if you can't send it back, charity shop.
