Out of the blue I am being made redundant. I have managed to bag an interview for a senior role in an education charity. Director job title, working directly to the CEO. Charity does not work in schools and is more vocational education focused.

I have recently lost 8 stone and wasn't expecting to be job hunting so I don't have an interview outfit.

I need opinions please on these outfits. If they're not suitable I need to do an online shop now for delivery tomorrow or Saturday. I have six possibles so I will add 3 here and 3 in another comment:
Option 1: grey dress
Option 2: zig zag skirt
Option 3: snake print dress and lemon jacket

Not the zig zag skirt please

OneNewEagle · 28/05/2026 16:39

Option 2 zig zag incase it’s very hot where you are.

ThePoetsWife · 28/05/2026 16:41

Try the jackets with the grey dress but it’s good in its own tbh (I am a c suite)

Gosh, this has really made me feel like I am out of the loop. Even for senior roles, I thought the vibe was far softer these days - certainly my DILs who are senior in the city don’t wear pattern and neutrals are the theme - navy, white, beige, cream. I think zig zag skirt and lemon jacket are aging and overly formal.

Personally I prefer the trousers and the longer jacket with a softer plain blouse. Or even a nice cardigan - a pop of colour from Oliver Bonas or a subtle blue or beige from Cos.

But what do I know? I do think the London look is less formal than other areas. Congrats OP on the weight loss - just make sure you are dressing for the look you have now.

For interviews you need to be very smart though

redboxerclub · 28/05/2026 18:32

Can you try the navy blue widely trousers, the cream and brown top and the other jacket?

I think you do need shoes- loafers. And maybe a pair of black trousers. I do like the light coloured jacket that shouts senior to me . Good luck with it all. Some light make up, perfume and a blow dry at home. Simple gold jewellery and a nice leather bag.

bananaboats · 28/05/2026 21:12

Another vote for the grey dress, it looks the smartest for an interview.

Doggymummar · 28/05/2026 21:17

I think the trousers are all too small and tight round the hips and groin. The zigzag skirt is lovely, maybe with the cream jacket if it's cool.

redboxerclub · 28/05/2026 21:51

The grey dress looks like an evening gown 🤷‍♀️

Brinny · 28/05/2026 22:42

You need to feel comfortable so you are relaxed, the grey dress is lovley , but are you comfortable. Sometimes a new out fit can make you feel top dollar and confident. Navy and cream work well .Good luck and smash it .

Rattles1 · 28/05/2026 22:52

i think a plain skirt with the jacket would look lovely and professional (instead of the zigzag). Navy skirt and yellow jacket? nice colour combo. Congratulations on interview and weight loss :)

ElliePhant28 · 28/05/2026 22:57

Zig zag outfit gets my vote. Good luck!

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 28/05/2026 22:58

Congrats on your interview! I think option 8 is very smart and the only viable one really. The others are two casual and the grey dress is completely out of season.

AImportantMermaid · 28/05/2026 23:04

Option 7 or grey dress. I think zig-zag skirt is fine but is ‘out for a nice lunch’ rather ‘I am a strong leader’.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 28/05/2026 23:05

Not the grey dress. Ok for winter but not the end of May. First two skirt/dress outfits - not the trousers.

Doubledenim305 · 28/05/2026 23:11

Zigzag skirt looks interesting and stylish. Definitely best choice in my view. Go get that job! Well done you.

Me too.

Clearsky01 · Yesterday 09:14

I think zigzag too!

Quercus6 · Yesterday 09:23

Another vote for the zigzag skirt outfit. I wouldn’t normally go for a pattern like that, but with that colour top and jacket it looks put-together and summery, and as a pp said, it has a bit of personality.

AlexaStopAlexaNo · Yesterday 09:48

I must be way out of touch because I don’t think any of the outfits you’ve shared so far are right!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 10:09

@AlexaStopAlexaNo Why? It’s a school admin job. I’d not go casual but a summer dress or 2 piece is fine! It’s not a very smart workplace and not a casual one either. Just a standard day outfit is what’s expected.

Justwantedtosayrightnow · Yesterday 11:30

Zig zag skirt outfit looks the best, smart but nice and summery.

I wouldn't call it a school admin job:

Grey dress is perfect

I would change the belt for a brighter colour, red or blue. And add some discreet gold jewellery, nothing that clanks or rattles though!

TheOriginalFrench · Yesterday 12:10

@petitpasta the grey dress would work if you could have it shortened by several inches - do it hits just beneath the curve of your calf.

And it needs to be pinned / sewn at the crossover point or higher.

It's not school admin, salary is £90k
