Too white for a wedding?

KookyOliveSwan · 15/05/2026 15:10

I have 4 weddings to go to this summer, so I’m looking for a dress that I can wear to all of them.
I’ve fallen in love with this one, but is it too white/cream: https://www.theoutnet.com/en-gb/shop/product/zimmermann/dresses/midi-dresses/floral-print-lace-paneled-cotton-voile-midi-dress/46376663162888639

I wouldn’t choose white or cream accessories, and for the church wedding I’d wear a sage coloured jacket with it.

It definitely isn’t bridal, but is it still too white?

It’s virtually the same material as my nan’s pillowcases from 45 years ago. Similar shape too.

MrsMitford3 · 16/05/2026 19:16

I think you need to choose another dress.

It photographs very pale-y white.

There are millions of dresses. Pick another one.

Busbygirl · 16/05/2026 19:22

It’s a stunning dress. It’s cream not white and even if it was white who cares? The no white rule is made up nonsense. Go for it OP!

MJFEB2026 · 16/05/2026 19:32

Both lovely dresses!

It really has. I first heard it as a child in the 80s from my mother and grandmother and aunt. I've seen it referenced in books and TV shows. I didn't know until MN showed me that so many people didn't know about this. I have no idea how they missed it.

Just wear another colour. It's not hard. Indian weddings are the same, only the bride wears red, and people all manage to just wear some other colour without complaining and finding it impossible and all that.

What on earth? I'm from India and I have never heard that we can't wear red to a wedding 😱

I'm pretty sure I've worn red to a wedding and not a single one of the sarees I wore in my own wedding was red. (And I wore a lot of them. Indian weddings are hard work).

Unless you are talking about a Punjabi wedding. I think in traditional Punjabi weddings the bride wears red though I've never heard that no one else can wear red. But that's just as a small sub section of Indians. Please don't claim that 1 billion people have got the same crazy problem about not being able to figure out who the bride is as people have here. 😄

(Though our weddings are crazy in every other way)

More on topic, op, I love the second pink dress you linked. The first one is indeed very white but I'm not an expert on British weddings

Why do posters write this "it's like my Nan's..." nonsense?

The dress is nothing like pillowcases. You don't have to like it but comments like this are so pointless.

it was the same as my nan’s pillowcases - get over yourself!

You don't seem to have noticed, but generally speaking people are usually kind and polite to each other on S & B.

NewBrightonEel · 16/05/2026 23:37

The dress is awful - and not an appropriate colour for a wedding anyway

The lace sections are cream but the floral fabric is peach or pink.

Helliephant · 17/05/2026 02:26

Its cream, its got lace, and its ugly.

Helliephant · 17/05/2026 02:27

Jesus I just noticed the price 😅

@KookyOliveSwan - I hope you haven't been even remotely put off your lovely Zimmerman dress by the shitty insulting comments that some people think it's fine to make. Ignore them - please wear it & love it, lots!

The Monsoon dress is fine - but I think you can do better than something where you say you "quite like it" & it's "totally inoffensive"?

It seems more of a waste to me to buy a dress you don't like that much for £112, than it is to buy a designer one that you absolutely love & will wear many times for £600.

I don't know what colours & styles/brands you like aside from pink & cream, romantic & pretty. But for under £150 you can get another Zimmerman dress on eBay or Vinted - or another brand that does lots of pretty, beautifully made dresses that you can wear again - such as Erdem. And they're almost all silk or other natural materials - the Monsoon one is 100% polyester, both dress AND lining ...?

EleanorMc67 · 17/05/2026 04:05

Some suggestions from eBay & Vinted that are a S/8-10. They're all under £150 - sometimes cheaper than the Monsoon one! You might like Ulla Johnson dresses?

I have no real comment at all about the first dress, (you won’t be mistaken for the bride if she’s wearing a traditional gown) but I’d urge you to think again about the pink Monsoon, @KookyOliveSwan.

It’s so droopy and sad and in such horrid fabric - I feel depressed just looking at it. Are you sure you want to wear such a thing?

Ophir · 17/05/2026 06:45

There’s no comparison between a monsoon dress and a Zimmerman dress, they are two very different things

I agree the Monsoon dress just isnt in the same league and is quite dowdy.

Also urging you to reconsider op. Absolutely no one in real life would reasonably think the original dress is a no no. Some MNers are so strange about this stuff. There was a poster who wanted to wear a white dress with massive black polka dots and posters were up in arms about that 🙄

MsAlignment · 17/05/2026 08:19

Just to clarify:

I wasn’t comparing the Zimmermann frock to the Monsoon. The OP has said she’ll wear the first to two weddings but has sent for the second as a very much cheaper option for other weddings.

I own Zimmermann clothes - and haven’t shopped at Monsoon for at least twenty years. But it’s not the relative cheapness of the Monsoon I object to - just its irredeemable dowdiness.

Ophir · 17/05/2026 08:58

Some of those Palava dresses are lovely @PhaedraTwo and a new brand for me!

I bang on regularly about Palava. The Palava dresses are organic cotton, made in the UK and are only between £9 to £29 more than the original price of the Monsoon dress.

ainsleysanob · 17/05/2026 09:17

It’s a lovely dress! I see this so many times on here asking if something is ‘too white’, are women really so arsed in real life about this? Do they actually get the titty lip on, on their wedding day, if someone is wearing something they consider ‘too white’? I can’t imagine ever being that sad.

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 17/05/2026 09:35

Tryagain26 · 15/05/2026 15:16

Maybe because she is spending a lot money and she doesn't want to spend it on something she doesn't love. She loves that dress and it looks very suitable for a summer wedding

It’s beautiful, but…. from a distance and in the photos it will still look like a white dress - if she wants to be “that guest” then she should crack on.

I doubt the bride would notice too much but the other guests will! And it will look very white in the photos. There are thousands of dresses especially with a budget of £600. I don’t get why you’d risk it.
