Looking for a polished khaki shirt dress for a wedding anniversary

MrsK · 03/05/2026 18:59

I am looking for something similar to the Burberry Tanya dress without the storm flap. I will be celebrating my 30th wedding anniversary in a couple of months & I am looking for a dress like this. I don’t wear dresses often so prefer a more shirt style dress. I like the colour or khaki. I am tall currently size 14 although hoping to be size 12 by then, late fifties a bit of a tum. Any advice regarding accessories would also be gratefully appreciated. I want to look polished but relaxed.

My budget is around £200 for the dress
Thank you

Sorry forgot to condense link. I really like this boden dress

LaurieFairyCake · 04/05/2026 11:10

I love that lily silk one - so gorgeous!

minipie · 04/05/2026 12:05

I’d look for a flowy version if you want to
look dressy/ polished. The cotton and linen ones will look great for 5 min and then crumpled IME. Look for silk mix or lyocell.

this could be good if you are apple shaped, won’t be so good on hourglass

minipie · 04/05/2026 12:06

this is also Mango and lovely IMO

sorry ignore this one, seems to be sold out in the UK

DunnocksGalore · 04/05/2026 12:10

That Mango dress is €4,000 . Bonkers!

Enjoying the thread. I quite like a khaki shirt dress…

BotaniskaBeryl · 04/05/2026 13:41

I instantly thought of the JL dress linked to OP because I ordered it this morning, along with this.

I am also in the market for a stone or khaki shirt dress. I'm not hugely fond of the buttons on the JL dress but it has got positive reviews so thought I'd give it a try as I think I would wear it a lot.

Nothing on the M&S webpage atm, but Jaegar are good for the sort of thing I think you might like.

This is also in the running, both not as 'clean' a line as I would like in an ideal world....

Boden

Zoe Short Sleeve Shirt Dress-Woodland Green

Make the workday morning rush easier with this short sleeve shirt dress. It's a lightweight style spun from 100% cotton and the two front pockets give it a modern utilitarian finish.

I thought that at first but I think it’s actually a totally different currency with much lower value - the UK price was about £60!

Are you world war 2 re- enacters?

Rantypanties · 04/05/2026 15:05

Ooo @EleanorMc67 I love your ideas!

Hobbs do lovely shirt dresses. This is more olive than khaki but it does hang very nicely? beautiful covered buttons; I like the tie at the waist; and the length of the sleeves also ticks boxes for me!

Oh the Hobbs one is lovely

BotaniskaBeryl · 04/05/2026 15:38

I like This at Hobbs, it’s on my list but I’ve got four dresses on the way so I thought I’d wait. Also thought it might be a bit full in the skirt and heading towards feminine rather than the utilitarian the OP is after.

Max Mara weekend have got a nice shirt dress, more brown though.

This is a more modern version of a shirt dress

This is fabulous! Ta for the tip.

Karen Millen has been quietly getting on with it in the background IMO. There are some gems if you’re happy to look.

I had a few things from there in the 90s that I loved - including a silk twill fan-patterned blouse that I kept for years (optimistically!) after it no longer fitted me!

But Karen Millen herself was wee, & I found them to be generally a) better for shorter women & b) too clubby/blingy/tailored/fitted. And then they just completely lost their way after she sold up, & are now owned by Debenhams aka Boohoo ... Which is offputting to me.

But a few nice things seem to be cropping up amid the polyester frocks, often in natural/better-quality fabrics - which makes me wonder if they're trying to separate it off as a more design-led, higher-end option of late?

Such as this, in cotton sateen.
https://www.karenmillen.com/product/karen-millen-rose-print-cotton-sateen-floral-woven-belted-maxi-shirt-dress_bkk28352

Or this, in cotton organdie.

https://www.karenmillen.com/product/karen-millen-tailored-linen-wrap-tie-waisted-maxi-dress_bkk28155

No idea what the quality or fit is like, & they're a bit smarter/cleaner than my day-to-day look - but it's good to see an improvement!

Thank you @Thisisthedream @Charlenedickens @EleanorMc67 @Netaporter @Overtheatlantic

I really appreciate you taking the time to look & post suggestions. We’re having dinner at Core, I think I know & understand my direction now with your help

Youre welcome, @MrsK !! And that restaurant looks fabulous.

There are a few other pieces on Lilysilk that may be of possible interest. Not all silk - some are silk/linen mix.

The Reiss dress above is really elegant and beautiful.

I'm afraid I agree with Farriersdaughter and a khaki shirt dress is very much a non dressy day dress.

EleanorMc67 · 04/05/2026 16:46

However, @MrsK - I wasn't sure if your ruling out of the original Burberry dress because of the placket meant that you don't want any pockets/buttons over your chest at all? As, if so, that would rule out some of the suggestions already made?

Have you seen any dresses you like from the suggestions so far?

I too am tall, OP - which is in part why I suggested large rather than delicate pieces of jewellery. The latter tend to disappear on me - plus I think that type of dress needs something noticeable for evening.

Some of the Hobbs ones look nice - but I don't like dresses that are over-the-knee to mid-calf on me as I don't think they're quite right for my height & proportions. Past my calf is best - & more elegant IMO.

I did rather like how this one was styled online. Mules would be good?

Not a shirtwaister I know, but it is a lovely elegant dress.

I love this shape so much but the colour seems really tricky! Why can't anything ever just be normal green.

I suppose it is a "normal" green to those who suit that shade! But yes, it does seem a bit too Farrow & Ball "Baby's Nappy" yellowish-green ...!!!

EleanorMc67 · 04/05/2026 20:41

I thought this looked a decent shape - though not sure what the fabric is like. But could look good with a better belt.

Btw OP, if shirtdresses are your thing on the occasions that you do wear a dress, you might find some ideas on this previous thread.
