What brands have good quality clothes that I can get in the sale or on vinted?

What are your go to brands for clothing?

I recently bought some lovely summer dresses in the white stuff sale, I also bought a good bit in the M&S/ Nobody child sale a few months ago.

I have also picked up a boden dress and cardigan from Vinted.

I am 'over' wearing very cheap clothing. But I am on a cheap clothing salary!

I am trying to make a 'list' of places to keep an eye out for on vinted or sales.

Any advice will be gratefully received!

both have regular sales that are well worth looking out for. (Or signing up to mailing lists for.) Anything from either in natural fabrics should be well made and relatively hard wearing.

On Vinted I've had some good bargains with Hobbs and Jigsaw which tend to be well made

Thanks all. I am still re discovering my style after being pregnant or breastfeeding for 5 years. Then there was covid before that.

I mainly bought in primark/similar before, then lived in leggings/ hoodies.

I want to build a wardrobe of clothes that are better quality and will have lasting time. I know it sounds silly, but I can already see how the much better cut and fabric does a lot more for me.

I've lost weight but can't afford to replace all my clothes with new ones. I use Vinted a lot! I have bought a lot of Hobbs. Whistles and Jigsaw for work, and NYDJ for jeans which wash and wear really well.

Jeans are my nemesis right now! Strangely I have one primark pair that I find ok. Finding the right fit on legs, bum and tum has never been easy. But it is so hard after 2 sections and weight in places I never had before!

Me and Em is often good pickings on VInted as are the brands that you mentioned in your OP. My advice would be to search for those and then check that the fabrics are natural - so cotton or linen rather than polyester or viscose.

You’re young, @pontipinemum, but I’m on S&B all the time hopelessly trying to persuade posters of my own (much older) generation that if they’d only Buy Better Clothes they could stop worrying so much about lumps and bumps and perceived physical imperfections - because well cut clothes in decent fabrics do all the work for you.

(I do always say try pre-owned or the sales if on a budget.)

@ScoutOfTheSoftHeartsClub for my sisters 40th I took her to a personal stylist type. The stylist said that instead of spending lots on tight shapewear etc that a better cut will mean they aren't needed. She was so right.

I am hoping to build my wardrobe with clothes that last years. As I said I'm not on a big wage but I think with vinted and sales I can build but a nice wardrobe.

I love hobbs. Lovely quality and clothes can be plain or most exciting patterns and colours. Just love their stuff.

There is a lovely whistles shirt on ebay but it's 100% polyester so still at £29 it's expensive

I love Uniqlo and M&S for basics. &Other Stories, Cos and mint velvet for more interesting things. My budget isn’t huge so I rarely spend more than £10 an item

and seeking out any brands that appeal to you on their own sites, you’ll soon find yourself becoming familiar with a number of good quality shops / brands. Collagerie picks things across a huge range of price points - from supermarket to almost couture - so don’t be put off if you see some extraordinarily expensive things. You’ll also find all the better High St brands represented, too. Once you know the names of brands you like the look of, you’ll can search for them on Vinted or other pre-owned sites. (I have no connection to Collagerie, just find it a good source of newness!)

I’ve noticed the same, cheaper stuff just doesn’t last anymore. On Vinted I try to focus less on the label and more on how the piece actually looks worn in photos. Sometimes you can tell straight away if it’s going to hold up or not.

i bought a Wyse dress for £20 last summer and one for £70 this week.

both in perfect condition and from recent seasons, the £70 label still on.

@styledbyemily yes some of the clothes look on their last legs and marked as 'very good' I'm not too worried about the label. I don't want anything with a big brand across the chest. Just clothes that are made to last

@pontipinemum if you're just looking for nice quality brands i suggest browsing these websites & then once you figure out the style you like, you can keep tabs on vinted. Or sales from the brands themselves

If your looking for high street type brands but a little better maybe, I tend to go for next, joules, weird fish and fat face. I have some joules tops that refuse to die not matter what they go through. The colour stays bright too.

I’d say some of the list beginning with Sezane above are a bit style over substance. And I’m not sure what Next, Joules and the others in the post above mine are supposed to be better than …

@ScoutOfTheSoftHeartsClub that's a bit snobby. If you're currently buying Primark and supermarkets, then Joules and Next are at least 2 steps up in quality, price and the time they last.

There was a thread about high street fashion a few days ago and Tu (aka supermarket clothes) was called out as being one of the last high street brands to still use textile specialists meaning that their clothes are designed with the right fabrics to sit and wear well. Personally my great revelation from Vinted has been about the quality of brands I never would have considered because I perceived them as cheap - namely Tu, George, F&F, Matalan and Simply Be. Not saying that there aren't better quality clothes out there but not everything reasonably priced is rubbish.

I find George at Asda and Tu can be good at the start of the season.

I went to JL the other day and I liked the feel of quality of Albaray clothes.

@pontipinemum - I buy almost everything on eBay or Vinted. I began on eBay & Etsy over 22 years ago, because I loved "proper" vintage clothes & accessories. Now I buy from these sites because I'm less well-off (& even more environmentally aware), so it's more of a necessity - but I still find it fun!

I rarely make mistakes though - & that's mainly because:

• I know my own style;
• I know what brands I like;
• I know what fabrics I like; &
• I know what colours & shapes & patterns suit me.

I also try not to impulse buy, & make sure to ask for measurements, fabric content etc (& check against something I already own that fits well). Vinted in particular encourages you to buy instantaneously in case you "lose out", & there's also the thinking that you can just re-list something that didn't work out. I've done that in the past a few times & regretted it - the secondhand market, especially on Vinted, seems rather saturated these days, & things can be hard to re-sell. It's not a very sustainable approach either, & rather defeats the point of buying used/secondhand/preloved (take your pick!) in the first place.

I also don't buy things just because they're currently in fashion. I buy things that fit with my own style - & some of those also happen to be in fashion, so they help freshen my wardrobe & keep things up-to-date. For instance, I'm avoiding anything polka-dot as they don't suit me - but I love & suit balloon/sarousel trousers.

That's not to say I never hit the Buy It Now button - I do, but only with things I'm certain about (often they'll have suddenly appeared in one of my saved searches). So, for instance, a specific pair of Zadig & Voltaire boots that I'd been after in my size - this took me five years! They were & are classics though, & I love them ... but normally I have just waited a few months or so to get my hands on something I've fallen for in a shop or online.

I could recommend the brands I like - assuming you want the upper end of high street clothes rather than designer? But I think you need to look & try on in various stores to get a feel for what brands you like yourself & which suit your shape, style etc? I like different brands for different things - for instance, Jigsaw is good for coats, bags & boots in particular, & M&S Autograph does good knitwear. Levi's jeans suit me, but I'll go try on styles first to work out what I want to hunt down more cheaply.

Oh, one thing I recommend you do if you like the look of something, especially if the photos aren't clear/there aren't any photos of an item on a model (Vinted photos are often so utterly shit!!). Take a screenshot of the best picture of the item, then do a Google search for the image. It will often show you the item being modelled (not just crumpled on a coat hanger), & give you a much better overview of how it looks being worn. And, say, what length it comes to on someone 5' 8". And if the straps are cut so that you can't wear a bra. All very useful things to find out - before you buy!!!
