Are these dresses suitable for a London wedding guest, brown or red?

Are these dresses ok for wedding guest attire, or a bit dull!? And brown or red? 🙏
The wedding, which is soon, is an afternoon and evening in London. Not super formal.

I just never know what to wear for events anymore, and lack confidence - and cash.

Both a bit dull for a wedding.

Scoose · 25/04/2026 10:16

The red one is definitely too casual

Thatsnotmynamee · 25/04/2026 20:07

Look, I tried both on in a fluster while my mother in law hovered outside 😅 I do realise both are too big! I'm a size 6-8.
I've really not got shoes, no.

Oh sorry, and budget... Around £100. If that's not crazily unrealistic

Pretty lavish have some fabulous dresses and a wedding guest section, the last two weddings went to I got something from there and Hope and Ivy (asos) with your figure you’d look fabulous in everything I’m sure!! I’ve heard people say club L London too but depends on your personal style.

LiquidSquid · 26/04/2026 16:50

They look a little too casual to me.
Dorothy Perkins have some nice dresses in your size.

Shoes, are you looking for heels or flats?

I like the brown one but the bodice doesn’t fit. The red one is unremarkable and much too big. You have a great figure-you should really make the most of it.

Clogblog · 26/04/2026 16:57

Of the two, I prefer the red. Can't stand brown, such a drab colour

But if I had your figure, I would wear something much more fitted

Mumof2girls777 · 27/04/2026 05:20

I honestly think Vinted is your friend here. There are so many gorgeous dresses that have only been worn once or a couple of times. I'll probably get slatted for being old fashioned but I still love dresses from Coast for a wedding. I am a similar size to you and there are loads of coast dresses in size 6 that you could purchase for £15. (You could buy 2 and keep the one you like the most and sell the other one on again.) I have two young daughters so completely feel your pain about finding time to actually go shopping.

Thanks all! I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by choice and indecision. I have small kids and find it hard to find time to go shopping alone - am going to try again tomorrow. I just don't really know where to start, as I'll need to buy shoes and bag too, and then maybe a bloody jacket as well... More suggestions welcome, it's better than me searching!

If you're overwhelmed, start with 'what colour suits me best'?

Pick three shops you really like. Look on their websites for that colour. If no good, move out from there - either the same shops, different colour, or different shops same colour.

If you start looking at everything all at once, it is overwhelming. Focus in on your personal preferences.

WhereAreWeNow · 27/04/2026 05:56

I like the brown one if you can get it in the size down and dress it up with shoes and accessories.
I also recommend Vinted. Mango and Zara have a lot of wedding guest suitable dresses and they do smaller sizes.

Look like work dresses so if it's informal I'm sure they'll be fine

Do you go to work with half of your back on show?

CossyBunt · 27/04/2026 06:19

What’s the big deal about the wedding being in London? Are we talking registry office in Lewisham or St Paul’s Cathedral?

Empress13 · 27/04/2026 06:26

Brown one is better red is shapeless and something you’d wear to work

Goingncforthisone · 27/04/2026 08:06

Love the brown one, the back is fab and you have a great figure - but agree you need to come down a size on the bodice. Would work with jewellery and heels.

Some of the dresses suggested by are perhaps more for the older generation than yours. Brown is on trend and looks amazing with your hair!

Vinted is a good shout - the red halter neck one that was shared (shown worn on the model) is gorgeous.

NorthFacingGardener · 27/04/2026 09:02

I still think the brown one is gorgeous - in a smaller size and with nice shoes it will be perfect. There’s nothing drab about it (as someone else said). It wouldn’t suit everyone but it compliments your hair beautifully.

🤣🤣 I don't know! Mumsnet did the title automatically, I'm blaming them!

I am actually pondering sizing down and sticking with the brown. Maybe with gold shoes or pink or something 🤷‍♀️

Sounds good!

Gold accessories will be great.

This dress is really flattering when on (the green looks so much better when on/in person), can dress it up for a wedding or wear with flats/sandals in spring/summer so it could be something you'd wear again.

I bought the brown for a wedding and had lots of compliments, but you definitely need it in a smaller size. It’s a lovely dress.

Maddy70 · 27/04/2026 19:49

The brown is gorgeous but both are suitable tbh
