Do you rinse and repeat?

Just curious really. I only ever shampoo my hair once, but have recently seen people talking about how important it is to do it twice to ensure hair is properly clean. Some say their hair looks much better as a result too.

I always assumed the instructions to “rinse and repeat” was a way to sell more shampoo. But perhaps that is overly cynical of me?

So what do you do, and why? And if you are a double shampoo-er, would you recommend I start? For context, I only wash my hair every 3 or 4 days but I rarely (like once a month) use any hair products and I rarely even blow dry my hair.

I started doing this recently and have actually been shocked in the difference in my hair! I only wash twice a week though not sure would make as much difference if you wash your hair every day anyway.

Greenwriter76 · 26/04/2026 20:36

I didn’t used to and my then hairdresser always commented about build up in my hair. I have done for a while now - I have curly hair and use a co-wash rather than harsh shampoo and I use product/s, (e.g. serum, mousse) albeit silicone free, most days. I was my hair every 3-4 days.

My first Saturday job was in a hair salon, washing hair. I was taught to shampoo twice, even before working there I would always shampoo twice.

EstherGreenwood63 · 28/04/2026 13:10

Do I 'eck.

I’ve done two shampoos for as long as I can remember, j don’t know why/when I started.
I find whatever shampoo I use, I don’t get much of a lather first time, but then the second time I only need the smallest amount of shampoo and get such a good lather, so it just feels cleaner to me. I was very 2/3 days.

TulipsMakeMeHappy · 29/04/2026 07:30

Often, but I tend to do the first one standing upright, then the second bending over to make sure I get the bit above the nape of my neck properly, otherwise that never feels quite clean. We are also in a very hard water area and I think that makes a difference as the first one barely foams. And once every 3 weeks or so I use a clarifying shampoo.

I never used to, but starting washing twice a few years ago and I’ve really noticed a positive difference. Hair feels cleaner with more volume and I can go longer between washes. Second wash lathers wayyyy better too and makes me feel like my hair is getting really clean. I suppose it’s down to personal preference really.

I use salon quality Wella shampoo and conditioner in massive bottles with the pumps though, so that might make a difference too. Lasts for ages, around 6 months, but I have to pay around £40 upfront (covers both shampoo and conditioner). Not sure if it’s any different…

I use the same shampoo and conditioner. Those saying washing twice makes their hair straw are likely using a cheap rubbish one. I bought something else after my wella ran out, and after a couple of washes I went back and ordered wella again.

I wash my hair twice a week but only shampoo it once. Unless you’re working somewhere very mucky there’s no need to shampoo twice. Over use of detergent will simply cause the scalp to be either greasy or very dry. I say this as a qualified hairdresser.

Clearingaspace · 29/04/2026 07:41

Hard water area, I wash my hair twice a week and shampoos twice each time. Very occasionally three times if I have left it too long! Even shampooing twice i sometimes find I have build up on the side I sleep on. I have noticed hairdressers really spend much longer than I do scrubbing my scalp so think I might need to take more time over shampooing. I have fine wavy hair, don’t use curly hair stuff but do use heat protection and blow dry.

Dressses · 29/04/2026 07:43

Always twice, but I have curly hair and use a cream and gel in it. The second go lathers much more.
Got my husband to do it twice and he said his hair felt much cleaner.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 29/04/2026 07:50

I wash my hair twice a week and I rinse and repeat quite often (but not if I’m in a hurry). I don’t use a lot of shampoo the second time but I really try to get in there / massage my scalp (whether that’s the first or second round of shampoo).

but careful / thorough conditioner application? That’s what makes the real difference imo!

BiddyPopthe2nd · 29/04/2026 07:57

I have thick hair that gets greasy. So the first shampoo often only has a few bubbles and I need a second shampoo to get a proper lather and make sure it is clean. I could wash more often but that’s not so good for my hair and I lack time for that. (Generallly it’s once, sometimes twice, per week). I notice it even more so in hard water areas than soft water areas (I am posted for work to a very hard water area for another 15 months, then back home to soft water).

CuriousKangaroo · 29/04/2026 08:01

From these responses, I get the impression that whether it is best for you really depends on your hair type, which makes sense. I have dead straight hair, which can be on the dry side and does not get greasy quickly. And I rarely use any products. So perhaps I will experiment and try it for a month, but I suspect given my hair type, it will make it drier/coarser than usual.

The first wash gets rid of the oil, sweat and product buildup.
It often doesn’t lather much because it’s breaking all that down.

The second wash actually cleans your hair. You get a proper lather, it cleans more evenly and leaves hair feeling lighter and less greasy.

Garman · 29/04/2026 08:15

I’ve started doing this recently washing twice with shampoo and way more conditioner on the ends, and my hair looks fantastic. Stays cleaner and more volume for longer due to the double shampooing, but also stays smooth and doesn’t get messy looking like the longer lengths used to.

deeahgwitch · 29/04/2026 08:18

At the hairdressers they always wash it 2 with shampoo, then use conditioner.

It’s really good isnt it?! I wouldn’t like to go back to other shampoos, but might have to one day if I need to cut back on spending.

BurntBroccoli · 29/04/2026 22:29

Always do it twice as the first time it doesn’t seem to lather up properly. During the second application, I massage into the roots and also give behind my ears a good wash too at the same time with the shampoo.

Rinse, then add conditioner to ends first then rest of hair but never massage in.

Wait 5 mins then give a final , thorough rinse until squeaky (literally) clean!

I only wash my hair once or twice a week as it’s long and thick.

What shampoo do you use?

Sorry I didn't see this notification.
I use L'oreal nutri gloss first (not glycolic gloss) and then follow with aveeno apple cider vinegar shampoo.

Genuinely life changing.
